Mac OS X Problems & Conflicts (Updated 11/9/2005)

Note: be sure to download the latest maintenance update 8.06 and check its list of fixes.

Issues with Reunion 8 for Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2 are below...
Issues with Reunion 7 can be found here.

Titles are alphabetized, however, new or updated items appear at the top of this section.

Problems Installing Reunion 8, saving new information, or creating reports
    If you are unable to...

    • install Reunion 8 or the Reunion 8 Demo. (e.g., You receive the "You do not have enough access privileges to install software on this Macintosh. Please sign in as administrator." error message.)
    • add new people or save changes in your family file. (e.g., You have added or changed information in your family file, but the changes have not been saved.)
    • create new reports. (e.g., You receive the "Unable to create file" error message when you try to create a report.)

...then you will want to try repairing your OS X Ownership & Permissions settings using the Disk Utility program (...Applications : Utilities : Disk Utility) on your computer. To do so, open the Disk Utility program, and go to the First Aid section. Select your hard drive name on the left, and click the Repair Permissions button. This may take a few minutes to complete. This should fix the problem. If you continue to experience problems, please contact us.

Binding Margins, Virtual Plotter, Fractional Widths disappeared in Mac OS 10.4 - Tiger. - This problem was fixed, by Apple, in the OS 10.4.3 update.

The Reunion item in the Settings pop-up menu of the Page Setup window has disappeared in Tiger (OS 10.4). This means that Reunion-specific settings described in the manual such as binding margins, fractional widths, and the Virtual Plotter are not available for use. This is a problem in Tiger (OS 10.4) and we are waiting for Apple to provide a solution.

To correct this problem, download and install the OS 10.4.3 update.

    Find Relationship and Index.

When in the Find Relationship window and using the Index to choose a person, typing a name to navigate the index doesn't work. It also causes things to look odd in the Find Relationship window.

You can still navigate the Index window when choosing a person by using the scrollbar in the Index window.

    Custom Paper Size.

The new Custom Paper Size option, introduced in OS X 10.2 and found in the Page Setup window, may not print properly. We are waiting for Apple to provide a solution to the problem.

However, this setting can successfully be used to save PDF files with a particular paper size, which can be useful for sending a chart to a professional printer.

    Virtual Plotter Clipping.

When using Reunion's Virtual Plotter feature in OS X, it may be necessary to choose a paper size from the Paper Size menu that is larger than the Virtual Plotter page size. Otherwise, the printout could be clipped.

AppleWorks 6 not displaying reports correctly. - This problem was fixed, by Apple, in AppleWorks 6.0.4.

The initial release of AppleWorks 6 did not import RTF files. Surprisingly, Apple removed that functionality from the upgrade. Specifically, AppleWorks 6 did not install an RTF (Rich Text Format) translator -- previous versions of AppleWorks and ClarisWorks did.

When Reunion creates a report it saves an RTF file to your hard disk and attempts to open it in your word processor. Since AppleWorks 6 did not have an RTF translator, it would open the report as a plain TEXT file, thus improperly displaying the report.

To correct this problem, we used to suggest downloading the AppleWorks 6.0.4 update. The 6.0.4 update adds RTF translation. However, we now suggest downloading the AppleWorks 6.2.9 update.

AppleWorks 6.2 reports not opening. - This problem was fixed, by Apple, in AppleWorks 6.2.7.

AppleWorks 6.2 has a defective RTF translator. This RTF translator will not open most of Reunion's reports.

As you know, Reunion creates textual reports by saving them to your hard disk as RTF files and then sending an AppleScript to open the report in your word processor. AppleWorks 6.2 begins to convert Reunion's RTF report file but never finishes (a spinning cursor appears and the report never opens). You'll have to press Command-Option-esc to "force quit" AppleWorks.

To correct this problem, you should download the AppleWorks 6.2.7 update. The 6.2.7 update fixes the defective RTF translator.

    Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2 Problems & Conflicts (updated 7/21/03)

Note: be sure to download the latest maintenance update 8.05 and check its list of fixes.

Titles are alphabetized, however, new or updated items appear at the top of this section.

Reports with pictures not opening in AppleWorks 5.

When you create a report with pictures included and choose AppleWorks 5 as the Destination, AppleWorks 5 will crash when opening the report if it includes more than one picture. This is due to problems with the AppleWorks 5 RTF translator.

Kaleidoscope conflicts with Zooming Buttons feature

The shareware program Kaleidoscope causes problems with Reunion 8 when Reunion's Zooming Buttons feature is turned on. Usually these problems take the form of buttons on the family card not working after a window has been opened (menus will still work). To work around this you can either disable Kaleidoscope when using Reunion or open your family file, choose Options -> Display and uncheck the Show Zooming Buttons checkbox.

QuickTime 3 and type 3 error or pictures not displaying

Some users of Mac OS 8.5 or 8.6 have reported that Reunion may quit with a type 3 error when QuickTime 3 is used. The best solution for this is to upgrade to a newer version of QuickTime. If you're using OS 8.5, you can upgrade to QuickTime 4 or QuickTime 5. If you're using OS 8.6, you can upgrade to QuickTime 6. All of these are free downloads from Apple.

In Reunion 8.03 and later, this will not cause a type 3 error. If a recent version of QuickTime isn't available, Reunion will just disable the display of pictures, which would require the use of QuickTime.

AppleWorks 6 not displaying reports correctly - This problem was fixed, by Apple, in AppleWorks 6.0.4.

However, we now suggest downloading the AppleWorks 6.2.8 update.

AppleWorks 6.1.2 reports not opening - This problem was fixed, by Apple, in AppleWorks 6.2.5.

AppleWorks 6.1.2 has a defective RTF translator. This RTF translator will not open most of Reunion's reports.

As you know, Reunion creates textual reports by saving them to your hard disk as RTF files and then sending an AppleScript to open the report in your word processor. AppleWorks 6.1.2 begins to convert Reunion's RTF report file but never finishes (a spinning cursor appears and the report never opens). You'll have to press Command-Option-esc to "force quit" AppleWorks.

To correct this problem, you should download the AppleWorks 6.2.5 update. The 6.2.5 update fixes the defective RTF translator.
