New Features in Reunion 7

  • Reunion 7 is a single application. The separate application for charting, formerly called SuperChart, is now combined into the Reunion application.
  • Reunion 7 lets you open more than one family file at a time -- making it easy to compare information in two different family files. For example, you can compare family cards or indexes for different family files on screen.
  • Fan Charts
  • The Quickbar is a new strip of buttons along the top of the family card. It provides the fastest way to get to a person or family. You can drag and drop people or families to this bar and name the buttons however you like.
  • Reunion has a built-in manual -- you no longer have to use your web browser to view the manual. You can search the manual anytime -- whether the manual is open or not.
  • Context Sensitive Help: Almost all windows contain a Help button -- a little "?" in the lower left corner that automatically opens the pertinent page in the manual.
  • Web Media Pages: When you create a report destined for the web, you have the option to include a separate page for each person and family that contains all the pictures, movies, and sounds linked to that person or family.
  • Get Picture shortcut makes it easy to put pictures into charts. Boxes in charts have a pop-up menu button which, among other things, contains a list of pictures linked to the person(s) in the box that you clicked. Just choose an image and, presto, it appears in your chart.
  • Virtual Plotter: a new feature that lets you see, on screen, how your large charts will be formatted before sending or taking the chart somewhere for printing. This feature also lets you use the LaserWriter 8.x print driver to create a single-page PostScript file for any size page. Then you can take or send a PostScript file to a business that specializes in printing large charts and posters, with no need to install Reunion on their computers.
  • Support for drag and drop.
  • Match and Merge Sources: helps to find and eliminate duplicate source records.
  • Find -> Relationship will show the blood relationships and the common ancestors of any two people.
  • List -> Inter-Family Marriages creates a list of all couples in your family file where the husband and wife are related by blood.
  • You can resize pictures directly on the family card view.
  • Rotated Text on charts. Text objects (such as chart captions, call outs, etc.) and perspective events may be rotated.
  • You can choose to show or hide preferred pictures on the family card by choosing Show Preferred Picture from the View button on the toolbar. (There's also a new keyboard shortcut for this.)
  • You can make corrections directly in the place list and Reunion will automatically correct every occurrence of the entry in your family file.
  • MP3 audio file support.
  • The number of marked people now appears, all the time, in the big status bar on the family card. Clicking this opens Mark Groups window.
  • Set General Sources feature adds the capability to assign a general source to everybody, all marked people, or all unmarked people.
  • New Mark Group additions...
    - Mark everybody linked to the current couple. (This will help you locate people and families who are not connected to your main branch.)
    - Set the number of generations, up and down, when marking ancestors or descendants.
    - Mark everybody on a family card.
  • Six different picture frames give you the capability to created feathered and ovaled pictures in charts.
  • Windows where you enter notes -- in fact, almost all windows with a scrolling field -- are now resizeable. New additions include: Edit Person (great for entering lots of notes), Edit Family, Logs, Ages, Get Info, Edit Parents, Edit Spouses, Speed Names, List Sources, Merge People, and Statistics.
  • Parents on the family card who have parents entered appear in blue text (just as children with children appear in blue text).
  • Go to Family Card shortcut: Boxes in charts have a pop-up menu button which, among other things, lets you open the family card for a person in a box. (This was available in Reunion 6, but only as a keyboard shortcut.)
  • Multimedia items can be linked to people and families.
  • The Find-and-Replace feature has been improved with the ability to choose the type of field to affect, how to search for matches, and the addition of source fields.
  • Select Detail Field option lets you add sources and either:
    1. keep the cursor in the data entry fields (birth, places, death, etc.) or...
    2. automatically move the cursor to the Detail field for the source you just entered.
  • Place lists can be sorted in reverse, so that each place name is evaluated backwards. Why is this handy? Because, for example, as long as you end each entry in New Jersey with "NJ," all New Jersey place names will appear together in the Place list -- whereas before Reunion 7, NJ entries would be scattered around the list. They would be sorted by city, county, town or whatever came first in each entry.
  • You can set the size of preferred pictures included in family group sheets, person sheets, and web output.
  • You can set the size of pictures printed directly from the Multimedia window.
  • Option to add one of three new frames to the graphic image on your web cover pages.
  • New option to include/exclude the title "Flags" for the flag field in a view on the family card.
  • Text objects on charts (like captions) can easily be duplicated.
  • The Export Text feature now includes the option to export flags.
  • The Overview window received a colorful facelift. It's also happy to stay open all the time.
  • The Save a Compact Copy feature now saves the list of Speed Names (places and last names) and Bookmarks.
  • The death of spouse appears in the Ages window.
  • Timeline perspectives can automatically be set to 90 degrees and 45 degrees (in addition to "left" and "split").
  • When a family has more than 20 children a pop-up menu now appears.
  • A pop-up menu for setting sound quality now appears in the Record Sound window.
  • Pop-up menus in the Find Anything window and at the top of columns in lists (such as the index, found list, place list, etc.) now contain several submenus, organized by field type, making it much easier to choose data for display in the lists.
  • Several additions have been made to the list of searchable fields in the Find Anything window and the list of viewable fields at the top of list columns (such as the index). Some of these will better support searching for possible data entry errors found in the statistics list.
  • Find Anything now supports searches for a changed date of "Imported."
  • Additions to the choices of fields when Exporting Text:

    Memos for all events
    Marriage Status Date
    Marriage Status Place.

  • The Clipboard pop-up menu button in the Mailing Address window lets you cut/copy/paste entire mailing addresses.
  • When using Match/Merge, the Find Matches window now includes an Unmarked People button in the Compare With section. This makes it much easier to import one family file into another and look for matches between the people in each family file.
  • Speed Names limit increased to 500.
  • Importing family files retains the marked/unmarked status of imported people (unless you choose Marked from the Automatic Flag pop-up menu).
  • Charts and family files now appear in the Apple -> Recent Documents submenu.
  • Chart lines and box borders can be 1/2 point in thickness.
  • Pictures and text objects dragged in charts now appear translucently (along with all other items now supported via drag and drop).
  • The preview tab in the Edit Source window now uses the data entry font and size specified in Options -> Fonts [Data Entry font].
  • When adding an existing father to a person or adding an existing child to a couple, and thus opening the Index window, the index is automatically scrolled to the correct surname.
  • New option to exclude page number footers in RTF reports.
  • Copy Source button in the Edit Source window (Preview tab) and in the Source List window.
  • In source records, free-form text fields can now be excluded from endnotes.
  • The Find -> Mark submenu has two handy new additions: Mark Everybody and Unmark Everybody.
  • In lists, the Page Up/Down, Home, and End keys now operate relative to the current scroll position, rather than from the highlighted entry, and they do not change the highlighted entry.
  • The place, calendar, relatives, source links, and mailing addresses lists all remember and scroll to the previously selected item in the list. This change should help those who frequently go back and forth between lists and the family cards.
  • Speed Names now operates in a modified FIFO system, so that names least recently used spill off the list first.
  • Sensitive data can be excluded from Gedcom export.
  • Gedcom import/export supports the ANSEL character set.
  • Gedcom import supports Gedcom files from UNIX machines.
  • Reunion exports notes using Gedcom version 5.5 slightly differently to provide better compatibility with other programs.
  • Sensitive data may include designated multimedia items, which can be excluded from web media pages.
  • In the Edit Person window, multiple adjacent citations in note fields are separated by superscripted commas. (This only applies when there is no space character between the citations.)
  • Multiple adjacent bracketed citations in text/RTF reports are separated by spaces for better readibility.
  • New letter key shortcut: sn & return, for Speed Names.
  • The Mailing Address Report window has the option to include field names in reports.
  • Family group sheet questionnaires now include space for marriage/status information for children, even if the children have no spouses.
  • Family group sheets have the option to choose family fields for children independently of the family fields chosen for the source couple.
  • Family group sheets have the option to include the grandchildren of the source couple. This appears as a "Children" item in the Children Family Fields layout setting.
  • Names can be flipped on the family card: LastName, FirstName.
  • When performing date feasibility checking, you have the option to exclude/include dates with modifiers such as: BEF, AFT, ABOUT, CIRCA, and ?.
  • Date handling has been improved so that a date entry with punctuation immediately following a date element is interpreted as a custom date.
  • If you attempt to open a multimedia file which has been moved and you click the Find button and locate the file, Reunion will add the path of the file's enclosing folder to the list of multimedia folders.
  • If your report includes preferred pictures and web media pages, you can open the web media page for a person by clicking his preferred picture.
  • When children without descendants are listed in a Register report (children without numbering), their information (birth, marriage, death, etc.) will be indented under the Roman numeral representing the child.
  • When locked family files and family files on a non-writeable volume (such as a CD) are opened, a warning lets you know that changes will not be saved.
  • Last Name UPPERCASE button now appears in the Children tab of the Edit Family window. This button mimics the same button in the Edit Person window.
  • The prompt in the Edit Person window (that tells you who you're about to enter -- e.g. "Father of John Doe") remains visible until you click the Save button. (Formerly it disappeared as soon as you began typing a name.)
  • Press the mouse (click and hold) on any relationship field on the family card to see the current source person in the status bar.
  • When you use the Add Item button in the Multimedia window and select a multimedia file, Reunion will remember the location of the file and default to its folder the next time you attempt to add another multimedia item. This is now a global preference and thus applies to other family files and is also remembered when quitting and reopening Reunion.
  • New Insert Picture menu command, for those who like to add images to charts the hard way.
