Thanks for the correction, particularly with Stuffit! I was not aware that
the Reunion data and index files are no longer separate. And then perhaps I
was dating myself from the old AutoDoubler days.

Subject: Recording birth year from census

Jerry Smith's question about recording the birth year based on
information found in census data is one we all face. I use this handy
service <http://www.wdbj.net/~wdbj/gen/birthyear/cenindx.html> and
then add "about" as this is an educated guess, but still a guess
nonetheless.

Subject: Re: Census Dates

This is a perfect case for when I use "CA" vice "ABT". "CA", short
for "circa" means approximately. I use that when I have a basis for a
date but don't know exactly. I will use the census age to calculate
the year of birth and then enter it with the "CA" as a prefix (adding
only a year and not a month). You can use Reunion to calculate the
year by typing something like "50 years before June 1880". The down
side is that Reunion will automatically insert something like "Jun
1830" as a result. I could insert "CA" before that, but that month in
there could be misleading. I will also source my information, in the
above example with the census info, which will remind me why it is so
imprecise. I use the same technique for other rough dates.

This is in contrast to guessed dates (i.e., the birth date of a
parent based on a spouse's or child's birth date) when I prefix the
year with "ABT". As long as you are consistent it will be easy to
explain to people with whom you share your data.

Subject: Thoughts on Ancestry disks

I am a little behind in the mail, but I had to add my thoughts

I know that it is nice to be able to search through the Ancestry disks at
home, but they are costly for just one or two items. Fortunately my local
LDS Family History Center has them all available.

However after trying them once or twice, I have given up on them as they
are pitifully slow and awkward to use. Their search algorithms are
extremely inefficient and frustrating to use. I prefer to do without they
are so bad.

But I think the major issue with these disks, is that they mislead people
into thinking that the disks cover an entire region, and that a search with
the disks means that you don't have to check out anything else. In fact it
is never clear to me exactly what a disk does cover, making it necessary to
check out all the 'real' records anyway.

Subject: Counting the true number of identified ancestors

I am using Reunion to compile a file of as many of my children's ancestors
as possible. In order to see "how I am doing" I would like to be able to
find out how many ancestors of any given generation I have currently
identified, eg how many 15G Grandparents.

Now, if I for instance I use "Find Anything" to find all 15G Grandfathers
and 15G Grandmothers (of which I should eventually have 262,144!), Reunion
tells me I have 711 of them. However because the very large number of
intermarriages in more recent generations I know I have in fact got far more
than this 711 (even though many of them will be duplicates).

Is there a way of getting Reunion to tell me how many ancestors of a
particular generation I really have identified? If exporting something to
Excel is necessary to perform this task, that's fine.

Hi List
Could someone tell me how to make a Gedcom with only say, 4 generations down
and not 6.
Selecting mark groups - descendants off so & so will mark them ALL and
selecting mark groups - ancestors off - will only mark the direct line when
I want ALL of them but only to a certain level.
I am still using 6.02 version.

Subject: RE: Counting number of ancestors

On 4 Sep O1 Richard Hodgson asked how to use Reunion to find the number of
ancestors identified in any generation.

Roger, I am not aware of any automatic method other than using "Find
Anything". That requires two "Runs" with husband and wife in separate sets.
Here is my suggestion, which gives a list of names in the order of husband,
wife, husband, wife...You can also show the vital dates/locations.

CREATE AN AHNENTAFEL REPORT:
A) Open the "Layout" window and select "Define Layout".
B) Press the + Add Layout button and name it "Names and dates".
C) In the Settings window click on "Person Fields".
D) In the "Person Fields" window remove all check marks except "birth" and
"death".
E) Return to the "Settings" window deselect all buttons that are currently
checked in the "Family fields and "Append to names" areas. In the
"miscellaneous" section choose "generation" from the "subtitles" choices.
F) Press the SAVE button.

Now you are looking at the Ahnentafel Report Window.

G) Select the number of generations you want to show. Remember that
Generation number is 3 more that the number of "Gs" in the relationship.
IE: 8G grandparents are in generation 11.
H) Deselect "remove duplication", "privacy filtering" and "sources".
I) Verify that the "Layout Window" says "Names and Dates".
J) Select your destination and press OPEN.

MANIPULATING THE REPORT:

If your report was sent to WORD, then it consists of the person's
Ahnentafel number, name and birth/death information in dialog form. It will
fill two lines. You are interested only in the LAST generation in the
report

K) SELECT this generation and COPY.
L) Open EXEL. PASTE starting in cell A1. Your default workbook page will be
wide enough to show each person's data on a single line. You will also
notice that there is double spacing to match what was in the report as it
appeared in WORD. Because of the double spacing the cell number of the last
person is roughly twice the number of printed lines. Your exact number of
ancestors in your TARGET generation is N = (C + 1) / 2. where N is the
number of ancestors and C is the last cell number.

If you would prefer single spacing then you need to get rid of the ".^p" at
the end of the a person's data line. Here is a "hack" way of doing this
because I don't know how to trick REUNION into specifying single space in
the report. Looking at your WORD document:

M) OPEN "Find and Replace". Turn on the "show/hide" to show the paragraph
marks.
N) Select one of them and COPY/PASTE it into the "Find What" window.
O) Insert a period to the LEFT of the ^p character. Put nothing in the
replace window.
P) Select ALL of the WORD document.
Q) In the Find and Replace window press "replace all". This action will
remove the ^p markers at the end of the sentence but leave the other one
intact. This gives you what still looks like two lines per person. However,
when this is pasted onto EXCEL you will have one line per ancestor and the
last cell number is your ancestor count for THAT generation.

R) Now select all the columns and lines of the generation you want to
print. Go to "File", "Print Area", "Select Print Area". Now you discover
that you'll have to print it in "Landscape mode" to have one line per
person.
S) If you'll go to "File", "Page Setup" you should be able to find a print
REDUCTION ratio that will allow the full width of the report in "Portrait
mode".

You still just have a list and its not obvious that you are missing any
ancestors unless you examine the ahnentafel numbers and see that there are
breaks. I developed an 8G (gen 11) spread sheet where each line is numbered
and the empty ones are the missing ancestors. Recall that the even numbers
are husbands followed by their odd numbered wives. The table is "built" by
letting EXCEL's "fill" function put in the Ahnentafel numbers. The "line"
numbers are the cell "thingies" down the left edge of the worksheet. I hand
typed the remaining information. I'm sure that a hacker, familiar with
Excel, could cause the WORD report to be put into sucessive columns. Then
he/she could select the surname column and paste it on the EXCEL sheet,
followed by the given name in its own column.

line Ahn surname given
- ---------------------------
1 1024 DEARBORN Godfrey
2 1025 <<= UNK wives produce empty lines
3 1026 COLCORD Edward
4 1027 WARD Ann
5 1028 GOVE John
6 1029 SHARD Mary
7 1030 PARTRIDGE William
9 1031 SPICER Ann
10 1032 PAGE Robert
11 1033 WARDE Lucy
12 1034 SMITH-3 Robert <<== I have 6 SMITH "lines" I number them to
keep them segregated.
13 1035
14 1036 NUDD Roger
15 1037
16 1038 DEARBORN Godfrey <<== Same as person on line one. I descend
from three of his children

skipping a few lines.....

1022 2046
1023 2047
1024 2048 DEAREBARNE William <<== he is on line #1024 of the spread sheet.
His ahnentafel number is twice that of Godfrey on line one. This makes him
Godfrey's father and the first person in Generation 12.

I have limited my tabulation to generation 11 for several reasons.
1. going to generaton 12 doubles the number of lines to over 4,000.
2. there is a big drop-off in names in the next generation
3. for me, gen 11 includes about 50% persons who migrated. Researching in
the old country, England excepted, is much more difficult.

Filling this table is my goal in this hobby. I realize that it won't be
reached but at least it is a measureable goal. I have not been distracted
by chasing down "royal connections" because the data is just too flaky to
spend time on.

I have enjoyed writing this "tutorial" because I think it is important to
be able to see the totality of your heritage at a particular generation
level. The ancestor that had your current surname brought in only 1/1024 th
of your genetic heritage. With this kind of spreadsheet you are quickly
reminded that there are the other 1023 people that were equally important
in making the biological YOU. Of course, we all know that the sociological
YOU is equally important but that can't be put on a spread sheet.

I am not sure why one would want to count all of somebodies
ancestors, but it is simple to do.

1) From the "Find" Menu select "Mark" and then the Submenu item
"Unmark Everybody".
2) Go to the person's card.
3) From the person's card, under the "List" Menu select "Relatives..."
4) Click on the "Identify" tab and select the person, then click the
button "Identify"
5) Click on the "List" tab and make sure that the "Parents' box is selected
6)Close the window
7) Under the "Find" Menu select "Mark Groups"
8) Click on the button for "Ancestors of XXX" .
9) Make sure all other boxes are not selected
10) Set the number of generations to a large enough number to
encompass everybody
11) Select "Mark"

In the upper portion of the window it will tell you how many marked
people there are. (If you did not follow the directions in step 9
exactly, the count may include the person and their spouse.)

If you want to know how many there are by generation...

12) Close the window
13) Under the "File" Menu and "Export/Import" Submenu select "Export Text"
14) Select the button for "Marked People" & a "Field Separator" of a
Tab. Also, "Convert Return characters to" ASCI 11.
15) Select whatever fields you want included in the export, including
"relationship"
16) Open the file with Excel and sort on the column with the relationships.
17) Count them by generation.

Reunion doesn't have any problem with date ranges, like between 5 JAN
1775-10 May 1778. However, if you enter a date range, Reunion will
open a Custom Date window as soon as you press tab or Save. This
allows you to enter the date you want Reunion to use when sorting or
calculating dates instead of having the program arbitrarily pick a
year to sort with. The range you've entered will always appear on the
family card, charts, reports, etc.

From: Steve Lawson
Subject: Re: Counting Number of Ancestors

Might as well toss out my method of counting number of ancestors. To find
number of unique ancestors, simply use Find>Mark Groups and mark all
ancestors of the the desired person. Unmark Mark Current Couple to exclude
the origin person from the count.

To find the number of total ancestors, including duplications, go to
Create>Ahnentafel Report and define a Layout by UNchecking each and every
box for every Settings group - easily done with one or two option-clicks in
a check bolck for each setting. Save the layout. UNmark everything in the
Ahnentafel Report window, set the Generations to encompass the entire tree,
and select Plain Text File as the Destination.

Open the resulting file TEXT file in a program that has a Word Count
feature, such as AppleWorks or Tex-Edit. Remove everything at the end of
the report (Signature and Index, if present), making sure there is one
blank line following the last name, since there is a blank line following
every other name. Use the Word Count feature of your program to determine
the number of paragraphs (carriage returns) and divide by 2. Then subtract
one for the origin person, leaving the total number of ancestor slots
filled.

In my case, Find>Mark Groups tells me I have 1409 unique ancestors and the
Create>Ahnentafel Report procedure tells me I have 1554 identified
ancestors in my Ancestry file (which I limit to 15 generations, counting
me). I have only 28 ancestor branches which begin with an ancestor on
another branch, with the most recent one being in generation 9. So, only
about 10% of my ancestors appear in more than one line.

However, I have to make another adjustment. If I have information for an
ancestor, even though I do not have the ancestor's name, I include that
"person" in my file as -- or by surname only and have 80 such "persons."
Hence, the total number of ancestors "slots" filled with named persons is
1474.

By the way, I find the resulting name only Ahnentafel Report to be a very
nice ancestor index by Ahnentafel number when compacted by removing blank
lines and formatted into multi-columns.

I'm not sure how you are trying to open this Gedcom file. To import a
Gedcom file into Reunion, open the new family file you created and
choose File -> Import/Export -> Import Gedcom. Navigate to where the
smiley.ged file is saved, double-click on it, and click Import.

For additional information, open a family file, choose Help -> Search
the Manual and search for "gedcom."

If you can't select the Gedcom file in Reunion, this means the Gedcom
file has lost its TEXT file format (a Gedcom file is a TEXT file
formatted in a specific way). As a result, Reunion's Gedcom import
window cannot see it. To make Reunion recognize the Gedcom file,
press the Option key, choose File -> Import/Export -> Import Gedcom,
and navigate to where the Gedcom file is saved. Continue to press the
Option key until you have selected the Gedcom file.

Smiley,
Use BBEDIT or AppleWorks to store the unzipped 1234.GED file in plain text
or ASCII format. Renaming it doesn't change how Reunion sees it - which
isn't in plain text at the moment.

I've downloaded many gedcoms from ancestry.com. Once unzipped, I always
open the .ged with BBEDIT and use save as to replace the initial file. A
few have bombed!

By the way, do you save the hmtl page that you initiated the download from
[text format]? It has two pieces of information that is useful - the email
adddress of the submitter and the URL where to pick up the gedcom [seen in
comment box on file info dialog]. I save this html page as 1234.txt which
ties it directly to the gedcom file.

And I always create a new family file 1234 with the first source
containing this information. For example, source 1. Ancestry.com, ³Billy
Richard Loy,² 12752.GED, 6 JAN 1999,
http://data.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=email&ti=0&f0=12752,
bill@xxxxxx_net.; where Billy Richard Loy is the first person in the
gedcom 12752.GED, it was created on 6 Jan 1999 by bill@xxxxxx_net. and I
named it 12752.GED.

Hope this helps.

I routinely make a 15 generation chart using R6. I always use left-to-right

"Landscape"page format under Page setup. Then I adjust the scale factor

ANSEL is probably the best character set to use. Most of the current

Go to the family card of the oldest person in the line you want to
mark. Choose List -> Relationships to calculate relationships for
this person. When Reunion's done calculating relationships, click the
List tab and uncheck all the boxes (Parents, Aunts & Uncles, etc.)
except Children. Set the number of generations you want to display
(in this case, 4) and click List. Select Unmark Everbody in Family
File and then Mark Everybody in List from the Mark pop-up menu. Make
sure the source person is marked and export your Gedcom file.

Just to let you know, in Reunion 7, you can set the number of
generations you want to mark in the Mark Groups window.

Subject: Single gen. Ancestor Count-IMPROVED

I posted a procedure for counting ancestors in Wednesday Reunion Talk. I am
talking about it again for two reasons

1. Two persons posted responses that showed how to count ALL ancestors.
That was not the goal of Richard Hodgson, who started this thread or of my
tedious procedure. It is my purpose to produce grandparents in ahnentafel
order, NOT, alphabetical order. I want grandfather 1024 followed by
grandmother 1025 and then grandfather 1026 and so-on. Breaks in this chain
of numbers identifies what son or grandson must be discovered. For example,
if 1026 is missing then it may be because daughter 513 (1026/2) is your
deadend for that family line.

2. Since I wrote before, I have learned how to use the text delimited
feature for import to EXCEL. I will describe how to use it in the same
step-by-step process. I could just start with the NEW information. However,
you would then have to look at two pieces of paper. So... I'll start with
Wednesday's posting and repeat it with updates inserted. You will notice
that I am leaving off birth and death dates because Reunion has the data
cloaked in verbiage which doesn't lend itself to tab delimitation.

CREATE AN AHNENTAFEL REPORT:
A) Open the "Layout" window and select "Define Layout".
B) Press the + Add Layout button and name it "Names only".
C) In the Settings window click on "Person Fields".
D) In the "Person Fields" window remove all check marks.

I) Verify that the "Layout Window" says "Names Only".
J) Select your destination and press OPEN.

MANIPULATING THE REPORT:

If your report was sent to WORD, then it consists of the person's
Ahnentafel number, Given name and Surname. However, it is in Rich Text and
may cause some problems when you later modify it for text delimitation.
Convert it to a Text Only file by: File -> Save as -> Text Only.

K) Scroll to the generation desired. Delete the "generation" title and all
lines above it. Also delete the index.
L) Eliminate double spacing by the following:
M) OPEN "Find and Replace". Turn on the "show/hide" to show the paragraph
marks.
N) In the "find what" window type ".^p" The first stroke is a period,
the 2nd is a caret (shift 6), the last is a little "p". This is the symbol
for "carriage return.

O) not needed.
P) Select ALL of the WORD document.
Q) In the Find and Replace window press "replace all". This action will
remove the ^p markers at the end of the sentence but leave the other one
intact.

R) Save this TEXT ONLY file with a name like "Ahnen bef delim."

S) When this file is later Opened by Excel it will look for commas or tabs
as signals to but text in a new column. Your WORD file has only spaces
between words. Let's replace all spaces with tab symbols. Once again OPEN
"Find and Replace". In the "find" window enter 1 space. In the "replace"
window, enter a tab symbol hitting the "tab" key once. The window should be
displaying ^t [a caret and a t].

T) Save this file with a name like Ahnen.delim.

U) INSPECT the columns for persons with middle names. These people will
have their Surname forced to the right one column from all the others. This
forced shift can also happen if you accidentally typed a space before the
first letter of the surname when you originally created the card. Clean up
the page by eliminating the middle names so that all surnames are in column
3. [Column 1 is the Ahnen.#, 2 has the Given name]. BY THE WAY, I have zero
persons, from generation 11, with middle names. They don't seem to come
into common use until the 1700s. Your text only WORD document will look
something like this if you have paragraph markers showing. The -> is my way
of showing a tab symbol on a plain text Email form.

1024 -> Godfrey ->DEARBORN
1025 -> "Miss Goody" ->_____?
1026 -> Edward ->COLCORD
1027 -> Ann ->WARD

V) Open EXCEL. Ask it to OPEN your "Ahnen delim" file. A "Text Import
Window" will appear. In the "Original Data Type" area select "delimited".
Then push "finish" at the bottom rt. corner. You should now be looking at
the same text as in the sample above except that you won't see any tabs.
The given and surnames will be in separate columns.

1024 Godfrey DEARBORN
1025 "Miss Goody" _____?
1026 Edward COLCORD
1027 Ann WARD

W) I prefer to have Surnames in the B column. Click on the "B". Use
command-I to insert a blank column at B. Copy and paste the SURNAMES into
this 2nd column and delete the OLD surname column.

1024 DEARBORN Godfrey
1025 _____? "Miss Goody"
1026 COLCORD Edward
1027 WARD Ann

Now you have ALL your generation 11 grandparents listed in husband-wife
groups. The Excel row number for the last line of data tells you how many
ancestors you have in the "Great Migration" generation. Subtract from that
the number of lines of text you created above the table. Or, as I show
below, create an A column and "Fill" with enough numbers to reach the
bottom of the table. But you still just have a list and it's not obvious
that you are missing any ancestors unless you examine the ahnentafel
numbers and see that there are breaks. YOU can create an 8G (gen 11) spread
sheet where each line is numbered and the empty ones are the missing
ancestors. Recall that the even numbers are husbands followed by their odd
numbered wives. The table is "built" around the spread sheet created in the
above example. Let your eye scan down the "Ahn" column looking for BREAKS
in number sequence. I see ones between 1034 and 1036, 1036 and 1038 and a
huge one between 1038 and 1100.

I have just discovered a way of placing a table with "holes" into another
table with a complete set of "Ahn" numbers but with no names. The upside is
that you won't have to search for breaks. The downside is that you will
have to delete as many lines in the new table as you have ancestors.
Procedure is explained at A) below.

line Ahn surname given
- ---------------------------
1 1024 DEARBORN Godfrey
2 1025 UNK "Miss Goody"
3 1026 COLCORD Edward
4 1027 WARD Ann
5 1028 GOVE John
6 1029 SHARD Mary
7 1030 PARTRIDGE William
9 1031 SPICER Ann
10 1032 PAGE Robert
11 1033 WARDE Lucy
12 1034 SMITH-3 Robert <<== I have 6 SMITH "lines" I number them to
keep them segregated.
13 1036 NUDD Roger
14 1038 DEARBORN Godfrey <<== Same as person on line one. I descend

15 1100 SAMPLE Joe

skipping a few lines.....

1022 2046
1023 2047
1024 2048 DEAREBARNE William <<== he is on line #1024 of the spread sheet.
His ahnentafel number is twice that of Godfrey on line one. This makes him
Godfrey's father and the first person in Generation 12.

A) Open a new spread sheet. Paste your list [like above] with Ahn #1024 in
cell B1.
B) Scroll down the table to your last numbered person, lets say 2016.
C) On the NEXT LINE type 1024 [the beginning # for gen 11].Leave the cell
selected.

D) Use EDIT -> FILL -> SERIES to reach the series set-up screen. Select
"columns" and enter a STOP value of 2047 [last person in generation 11].
Press the OK button and the bottom part of the chart with have numbers 1024
to 2047 in column B.

1993 GILBERT Lydia*
1994 EDWARDS Richard*
1995 TUTTLE Elizabeth*
1024
1025
1026
.
.
2047

The first three lines come from the "Ahnentafel table" that had breaks.
These are my last three gen 11 ancestors.

E) Select the FILL numbers 1024-2047 and make them BOLD

F) Select the entire table by dragging from B1 to column D's line that is
opposite 2047 in column B.

G) Use DATA -> SORT to reach the sort screen. In the "SORT BY" window
select column B. Choose "ascending". Mark "no header row". Press O.K.

Here is a sample result: The lines with a B appear as bold type because you
marked them so. The string starting at 1996 to the end mark the last
contiguous area with no names. Now the bad news. There are three redundant
lines that should be removed to have a perfect product. B1993, B1994,
B1995.

1993 GILBERT Lydia*
B1993
1994 EDWARDS Richard*
B1994
1995 TUTTLE Elizabeth*
B1995
B1996
B1997
B1998

.
B2047

You will probably have hundreds of lines of redundancy. I'll bet there are
"hackers" out there that can write a MACRO that might delete the second
occurrence of every duplicate Ahnen. number. Clearly, if you have only a
few hundred names it might be easier to copy/paste into an empty table and
not have to delete redundant lines.

I have limited my tabulation to generation 11 for several reasons.
1. going to generation 12 doubles the number of lines to over 4,000.
2. there is a big drop-off in names in the next generation
3. for me, gen 11 includes about 50% persons who migrated. Researching in
the old country, England excepted, is much more difficult.

Filling this table is my goal in this hobby. I realize that it won't be
reached but at least it is a measurable goal. I have not been distracted by
chasing down "royal connections" because the data is just too flaky to
spend time on.

Many of MY "empty names" lines have a SURNAME marker. It was placed there
whenever I found a child, without known parents, in an earlier generation.
I have a spread sheet that starts with 1 and goes to 2047. The first 1047
name positions are people in generations 1-10. If any of you would like a
further explanation of my SURNAME marker idea, I would have to send you an
EXCEL attachment and then a few notes on how you put in the markers. It is
impossible to explain on a simple text Email form.

Write to me if you are interested.

Subject: For What It's Worth

After a lot of head scratching I came up with the following scheme to store
genealogy pictures. The Finder was the solution. First I made a folder for
the most distant ancestor for whom we have pictures. This is "1823 Peter
von Weissenfluh". The first subfolder contains pictures of him and his
wife, plus other pictures of the family group. Each of their children got a
subfolder. Their first born was Alexander who was born in 1846. By putting
the year of birth ahead of the name I solved the problem of getting them in
the right order. Alexander is followed by each of his sibs in the order of
their birth. 1857 Johann was my grandfather. I assigned a color code to the
family members who are my direct ancestors. 1900 Garland was my father and I
am 1923 Calvin. There are instances of where I'd like to have the same
photograph appear in two or more folders, such as group pictures of my
grandparents and their children. In this instance I put the original photo
in 1857 Johann:Johann & Magdalena and aliases wherever else I may want them.

Someone mentioned this problem earlier this year and they had a simple
AppleScript that changed the file type. You drag and drop your GED file on
the icon and it then turns it to text and Reunion can than read it. it works

Subject: Ancestor Table Surname Placeholders

In the ReunionTalk digest for Monday 10 Sep, there should be a posting from
me titled "Single gen. Ancestor Count-IMPROVED". At the bottom I described
a new idea called "Surname Markers". I felt that it would be too
complicated to explain in the space available here. I invited the curious
to write for more information. With a little thought, I created another
tutorial that should speak for itself and not need me to send you EXCEL
attachments. I have changed the name of the concept to "Ancestor Table
Surname Placeholders".

Below is a part of my Ancestor Table. There is room for the 16 people
making up generation 5. Because gen 6 and 7 have 32 and 64 lines, each, I
have chosen to show the top and bottom ancestor number and then a few
persons in between to illustrate the Placeholder concept. The :: markers
show that there is an interruption in the list of numbers.

Generation 5 Generation 6 Generation 7
- -----------------------------------------------------------
16 Dearborn Josiah 32 Dearborn Asahel 64 Dearborn Josiah
17 Quarles Belinda :: ::

29 Strong Martha 56 SMITH 112 SMITH
30 Titus Edwin ::
31 Jewett Elizabeth 63 *Jones Mary 126 JONES
127 end gen 7

My Generation 5 is complete in that all 16 ancestors are known by name.
However...four of these persons have UNKNOWN parent given names. I have
typed a * to the left of their Surname. Because the father's SURNAME is
known, I find it interesting to put surname "PLACEHOLDERS" in the preceding
generations. It's a "reservation" for an UNKNOWN parent that I hope to
find... some day.

My generation 6 has 8 missing persons from the 32 in that generation. Four
of them have "surname placeholders" shown above in the generation 6 column.
The other four persons are their wives who can't even have a marker.

Looking more closely at Gen 5 we see a * for person 18. This tells you that
David Boyd is an orphan. His UNKNOWN father's name is also BOYD because his
ancestry is from a part of the world that used a unchanging (except for
spelling) surname. In the Ahnentafel [ancestor table] numbering system,
David's father MUST have an "A" number twice as big. David's number when
doubled is 36, the number of an unknown BOYD. Look at the Gen. 6 column. On
line 36 is just the surname BOYD, in caps. On my "real" spread sheet I also
make it boldface. You can see the Placeholders for PARKER, GIPE and SMITH
on lines having twice the value of each orphan.

My "real Ancestor Table spreadsheet" does not have the generation columns
side-by-side. You are welcome to try it. I chose to make a single column
numbered 1 (myself) to 2047, the last person in generation 11. It takes
about 46 printed pages.

I continue this process of creating placeholders through each of the
generations through 11. You can see a BOYD at #72 (twice 36). This family
name also appears at 144, 288, 576 and 1152. I created a "Spreadsheet
doubling tool" to help me place the markers in their correct position in
each generation. I show it below as made up of column "A" and as many rows
as you need to take a given number and reach your target generation by
doubling. Starting with row 2, each cell has a formula which doubles the
number placed above it. I have placed David Boyd's AN# [ancestor number] in
row one. The fact that he is in gen 5 is not relevant. As soon as I type
"18" the string of numbers below appear. I use the 36, 72, 144.... to guide
me to BOYD place holding cells in my Ancestor table spread sheet.

A second feature of this Spreadsheet doubling tool is that it will give you
the Ahn. #s for direct descent child and grandchild of a given ancestor. On
row 6 I've placed my first BROMLEY placeholder number. His son's number
appears as a 54 on the row below the given. When the successive division
produces an ODD number (like 27) then you have found the child that
"daughters-out" that surname. Of course, Mary BROMLEY did have a child but
it's number is not 27/2 = 13.5. The child's number is half of his father,
Francis IDLE, or 26/2 = 13. Well... 13 is an odd number also so this is the
person who "daughtered-out" my IDLE line.

This "tool" is a rectangular piece of a spreadsheet. It is about 3" tall
and 1" wide and is moved to a corner of the desktop so it can always be
seen. I save it as an EXCEL file named "doubling TOOL"

IN SUMMARY: I cannot see** how the present version of Reunion can produce
an ancestor data file in Ahnentafel order. The closest it can come to is
the list produced by creating an Ahnentafel report. But this report will
not give you the other interesting data in "cellular" form.

In a perfect world, LeisterPro would have answered the many requests for a
NEW FEATURE- "automatic generation of ahnentafel numbers". Many European
readers and myself posted requests well before the creation of Version 6
and V7. Had the simple programming been inserted, then you would now be
able to build an ancestor table with more columns that just number,
surname, given name.

** This is a challenge to Trisha, or others, but don't show me how to
alphabetize my ancestors.

PSS: Before you try making an ancestor table just think a moment. Doesn't
it look a lot like a pedigree chart? Of course it does. In each generation,
the number of names is equal to the number of graph boxes that you see for
that column on the chart. Furthermore, you say, the Chart box has the
additional vital data. But think, AGAIN, about what your gen 11 column on
the chart looks like. Lots of empty space between the boxes with no clue as
to the surnames that SHOULD be there. Lets say that you have person 1024 in
his box with 1025, his wife right below him. Then there is empty space
followed by box 1030. What are the surnames of the people who are missing?
Well, the first missing box is 1026. If you divide by 2 you get 513. So if
you go left into the gen 10 column of the chart you can see that box 513 is
Jane SAMPLE. That means there is a potential surname placeholder in box
1026 with just the text, SAMPLE. But there are two problems here. Because
Reunion prevents us from printing the ancestor number in a graph box, you
can't find box 513 to discover the placeholder name. The other problem is
that no one wants to go into their family file and give Jane's father the
name SAMPLE just so Reunion could build a box to hold his name.

I solved the missing ancestor number problem by hand typing all 700 of mine
into the user ID box. Naturally, I used by "Doubling Tool" to guarantee
accuracy. It took about 3 hours.

Subject: web page home card

I've just created web cards and uploaded them to RootsWeb's FreePages. The
upload was successful and everything seems to be there, but I am puzzled by
the "home" card. I thought the home card would be the Table of Contents
page, but instead it is a unixy looking screen that has two links: 1) Parent
Directory, and 2) bloxom. "Bloxom" is the family name that I gave to the
file. Clicking on "Bloxom" takes one to a link with a bulleted list of the
files and folders that I uploaded (PS01, PS02, WC01, WC_TOC.HTM, etc).
Clicking on WC_TOC.HTM takes one to the Table of Contents page.
The full path name to get to what I would like as a home page is
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bloxom/bloxom/WC_TOC.HTM
but I would like to get to that home page with just
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bloxom
which seems to be the format for other pages at FreePages.
My mistake must have been to upload my web card folder ("bloxom") to my
FreePage address (/~bloxom), instead of just uploading the contents on my
bloxom folder. Is there a way I can "move everything up" one level, deleting
the second "/bloxom" level? I am using Fetch.

ANSEL is the most common character set used by the current genealogy programs.

Enlarging the note field, doesn't guarantee that all the notes will
print. A family card printed at 100% measures 7.22 inches
horizontally by 4.83 inches vertically, regardless of its size on
screen. Since the form size is set, only so much information can be
printed on the family card.

If you're willing to try a different print out, try the Person Sheets
or Family Group Sheets. In a Person Sheet and Family Group Sheet, you
can include all the fields you want. To do this, choose Create ->
Person Sheet/Family Group Sheet and select Define Layouts from the
Layout pop-up menu. In the Layout window, check all of the fields you
want to include and then print it.

Someone else wrote the utility and the ReadMe file that goes with it, but
we put this on my website. You'll find it at:

http://www.lundeen.org/Reunion/ (don't forget the last slash)

The page's header says that you'll need StuffIt to expand it, but there
are two files there (in addition to the ReadMe) -- one is very small, but
as the actual file, may be corrupted crossing the Internet. If it doesn't
work, or doesn't work correctly, come back and get the bigger one (with
the ".sea" suffix). Double-click it, and it will expand "automatically."

It works just as Rick says -- drag and drop the file icon onto the
"toText" application and it's done!!

Reading this I realized a lot of this could be automated quite easily
in a Perl script. So I came up with one, called "ahnsheet.pl". It
does essentially the same thing as Mr Dearborn's procedure, although
with a few changes.

It takes as its input a plain text Ahnentafel report (no need to
create a Word/AppleWorks/whatever version and then convert to plain
text, by the way; you can just use "Destination: Plain text file" in
the Ahnentafel Report dialog in Reunion) or, if you prefer, you can
edit such a report to include only one or more generations of
interest. Output is a file in the same folder as the input called
"ahnsheet report". This is a tab-delimited text file you can read
into Excel/AppleWorks/whatever as a spreadsheet. It has a line for
every ahnentafel number in every generation present in the original
report -- e.g. if the original report includes ahnentafel numbers 1,
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13 the spreadsheet will have entries for all
numbers from 1 to 15 (since 12 and 13 are in the generation
encompassed by 8 through 15). The first column is the ahnentafel
number; the second is the surname; the third is the full name with
the surname omitted. If there is no entry in the input file for a
given ahnentafel number then the third column contains "?" and the
second column contains either "?" or an "Ancestor Table Surname
Placeholder" in Mr Dearborn's nomenclature. Preceding each
generation is a line telling which generation it is.

As an example here's part of my Generation 6:

Generation 6
32 HOLMES Nathan
33 ? ?
34 COOK John C.
35 (COOK) Barbara Maybill
36 COLLINS Solomon
37 PERRY Sarah
38 DUNN John
39 RECORD Ruth
40 BELDEN Daniel
41 SIMMONS Nancy
42 HOAG Eliab
43 GAY Jane
44 YORK Yeomans
45 COLLINS Catherine
46 BROWN Zebulon
47 LEWIS Sarah
48 *HANSEN ?
49 ? ?
50 *ANDERSEN ?
51 ? ?

A couple notes and caveats:

(1) Since I use all caps for my surnames I decided to use a preceding
asterisk to denote "Ancestor Table Surname Placeholders". A bug in
my script immediately became a feature -- there's one new asterisk
for each successive generation. So for example if ahnentafel #12 is
John SMITH and no ancestors are known, then for ahnentafel #24 the
placeholder is *SMITH, for #48 it's **SMITH, for #96 it's ***SMITH,
and so on. The asterisks give a visual clue as to how far a given
ahnentafel number is from the earliest known member of that line.

(2) I use the all-caps character of the surnames to have my script
extract the surname from the rest of the name. Thus the script will
not work correctly if you do not use all caps for your surnames. (It
also will fail if a surname doesn't contain at least two consecutive
letters. Maybe there's a better way to handle this but I can't think
of one. You can't just use the last "word" of a name as the surname;
there could be a suffix title.

(3) The script will fail if you ask it to process generations that
add up to more than 17000 individuals (a fairly arbitrary limit).

(4) Reiterating what Mr Dearborn said, if Reunion had the
oft-requested feature of putting ahnentafel numbers from the source
person into a field, either the User ID or a new Ahnentafel field,
then one could use "Export text..." to simply export ahnentafel
number, last name, first name to a file; then a much simpler Perl
script could handle the rest, with no need to resort to fallible
means to dig out the surnames!

You can download a "droplet" version of ahnsheet.pl from
<http://web.syr.edu/~rsholmes/genealogy/ahnsheet.pl.hqx>. You'll
need Stuffit or the equivalent to unBinHex it. You don't need Perl
to run it; just drag a plain text Ahnentafel report onto it.

A report has reached me indicating that, contrary to what I'd
thought, you do need to have MacPerl installed in order to use the
ahnsheet.pl droplet I described in an earlier message. I think if I
save it in a different format it can be used without MacPerl
installed -- I'll look into it, but meanwhile, if you want to use it,
you'll need MacPerl. Unfortunately I don't have the URL handy for
where you can get it, but just search for "MacPerl" on the web and
you'll find it. Sorry for the confusion.

On further investigation I realized it's worse than I thought -- my
script makes use of a library which apparently (1) must be present
separately even if I save the script as a "runtime" version and (2)
must have its path specified in the script, but that will vary from
one Mac to another. So even if you have MacPerl, you'll have to
modify the script to get it to work.

There's probably a way around all this, but I don't know what it is.

Sorry. If anyone else out there knows MacPerl better than I and can
tell me if and how this can be made a standalone app, please write me.

Several people have noticed problems with not being able
to open a GEDCOM file because it isn't being recognized

had an "All file types" checkbox to make other steps unnecesary,
since it is so common to get a GEDCOM file from an internet
application that may not be very smart about setting file types
on downloaded or attached documents.

However, another elegant approach is to get the shareware
program "FileTyper" (e.g., from www.versiontracker.com).
You can choose "Make Autotyper" to create a drag&drop
application that will change whatever is dragged onto it
into the desired file type. It might take a few minutes to
download it and figure out how to use it, but it's worth the
effort.

Type option-u to get the dots over the next character
(i.e., option-u u). If you ever wonder about that in the future,
run "Key Caps" from your Apple menu, and hit the "option"

1. You'll need to move everything up a level (as you've said)

2. To be able to not specify a file name on a URL, the file needs to be

Hi Micha,

I have part of my tree password protected sometimes (depends on if
FamilyDiscovery.com is deep-linking my site that week or not!!)

Please note that this method can be easily defeated by code-saavy
individuals. But for the average Joe, it works great!

When I am password-protecting my site, I have a link to a page, privacy.htm,
instead of my web tree. In the header, place these tags:

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1">
<title>Our Family Tree</title>
<script language="JavaScript1.2"><!--
var password = "placepasswordhere" ;
// The desired password

var message = "Enter Password";
// The message to show when the user is prompted for the password

var incmess = "Incorrect password! Access denied!";
// The message to show if the password is incorrect

var pw = prompt (message,"");

if (pw != password) {
alert (incmess);
window.history.back ();
}
// -->
</script>
</head>

Where is says "placepasswordhere" put your own password that the user has to
type. If the user types in an incorrect password, they receive the error
message above (Incorrect password! Access denied!) and the script warps the
user back to the original page to try again.

It's just enough to thwart some people, but again please note that it's not
bullet-proof. I use this only on the first page, since my tree is so large
and I update so frequently.

Good luck,

Subject: 1880 Census on CD

I recently learned that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has
produced a transcription of the entire 1880 U.S. Census (with over 50
million names), and that you can get the entire collection on CD for $50.
Lest you think they're trying to make any money at it, the collection comes
on 53 CDs! Apparently the software only works on PeeCees, though there have
been reports of successfully using PC emulators on a Mac to access the CDs.

I sort of wonder why it takes 53 CDs, since it is supposedly only the text
transcription (not the images). 50 million names, with a small amount of
info for each (less than 100 characters, probably), should only take about
500MB, which would fit on a single CD. Using any sort of decent compression
(Huffman, etc.) would probably get that down far enough to leave room for
indices and software.

Anybody have experience with this collection? Any ideas why it's so huge?

Subject: Re: 1880 Census

Oops! 50M names * 100 bytes = 5000MB, not 500MB, so that would be 10 CDs. Still, though, lossless text compression should get it down to a fraction of that.

Yes, it is a good program and it comes with Toast, the software for burning
CDs. Also they sell a newer version at their web site and it can be
downloaded for a trial use and then purchased with a code that unlocks.

It will run a slide show and does a nice web page with the thumbnail prints

of course - The web page format could be used to organize sets of all your

Randy,
I've used the CDs at our local LDS Family History Center. They include two
sets of CDs - an alphabetical index of the entire U.S. and also a set by
geographical region. With the National Index you can search for several
variables - name, year of birth, gender, race, birthplace, etc. Then the
Geographical CDs give the information as it was enumerated so you can see the
neighbors. The information also includes the FHL and National Archives Film
numbers and pages. It is an amazing resource. For example, I was able to
search the entire country for a female WILSON born within a specific age
range in Pennsylvania. It makes tracking those ancestors who moved very
easy. I also now have a print out of all of the EDELBLUTE/ EDDLEBLUTE/
EDLEBLUTE (rare surname) that were enumerated in 1880. Very nifty!

I can't give you a technical reason, but I can tell you a little about it
which may explain its size. Twenty of the CD's are an alphabetical national
index. This is what you use if you have no idea where someone might have
been in 1880. The others are regional. Thus, if you know that someone was
probably in Florida, you can go directly to that CD without having to go to
the national index, and you can even specify county and township.

Keep in mind that every single person is indexed -- not just the head of
household. And you can search on any of the following parameters: first
name, last name, gender, race, birth state, birth year within x number of
years, state, county, township. The indexing is fabulous!

We have Virtual PC on our machine and the CDs work beautifully. There's
lots of CD switching, but it's well worth it. This is possibly the best $50
I ever spent.

Yes Randy -
I have this set of CD's and I access them with Virtual PC . Although
I am not an expert on creating CD's I can tell you that aside from
the census there is a complete index. I suppose it could be
compressed but the LDS did not choose to do that - considering the
price and the fact that if you happen to have a problem with any part
of it they will immediately make adjustments so you will have a
compete set that works.

There has been a lot of good advice on this forum about these, using
Virtual PC and I instigated some of that exchange. The advice got was
excellent, they do work just fine, perhaps not as fast as they might
on a non-Mac but they still work and I have found them useful. First
name I looked up was my maternal grandmother who was supposed to have
arrived the year before - and there she was with a sister who's
whereabouts had eluded me, prior to this. Such a discovery made it
more than worthwhile to me.......

They can be viewed by the individual name or by neighborhood, the
index uses the soundex system so you will get a broad range of
possible "misspellings", although as with all indexing systems - you
may have to be inventive about how many other "errors" in spelling
you want to search. You can search the entire US, a state, a
county........by first name, last name, under female, male or no
gender. I suppose the broad range of options may make it necessary
to have a larger number of cd's to contain all of them.

The information presented is in decent size type, it is well spaced
and easy to read, another reason for the generous number of disc's,
to my mind.

Remember this is an organization that lets you down-load it's
genealogy program , free. No it does not work on a Mac any more, but
it is a decent program, even if it cannot hold a candle to Reunion.

And, no I do not work for them and am an Episcopalian by faith.

I have the collection, have used it many times, and find it well worth the
price (which I think was $40 when I bought it). As for its size, it breaks
it down by regions and then states within the region, That might account for
extra CDs, since a CD might not be filled when the region is complete. It
also has a complete index and the viewer. I use it with Virtual PC on my Mac.

not, in one or more generations of a source person's ancestry. I
posted a version of it but there turned out to be some problems.

I still don't know how to make a version that works without MacPerl
installed, but if you have MacPerl or are willing to get it (see
<http://www.iis.ee.ethz.ch/~neeri/macintosh/perl.html>), my new
version should work for you. It's at
<http://web.syr.edu/~rsholmes/genealogy/ahnsheet.pl.hqx>. You'll
need Stuffit or the equivalent to unBinHex it. Just drag a plain
text Ahnentafel report onto it to run it; it'll produce an output
file in the same folder called "ahnsheet report" which you can read
into ClarisWorks or, presumably, AppleWorks or Excel. Note that you
MUST use all capital letters for surnames (and not for given names)
for it to work correctly.

If you get an error message saying "too many ancestors" it's because
the *total* number of ancestors in the generations covered by your
Ahnentafel report (identified or not) exceeds 17,000. (For instance,
if your report includes at least one person in each generation from 1
to 15 you'll get the error, because the first 15 generations contain
2^16-1 = 32,767 people.) Edit your Ahnentafel report to reduce the
number of generations, or re-generate it within Reunion with fewer
generations. Or if you're brave, open ahnsheet.pl from within
MacPerl and set a higher limit, remembering that each generation
doubles the number of ancestors!

For further details see my earlier message.

Subject: 1880 census CDs

I have the 1880 Census collection from the LDS and would be glad to offer my
observations.

First off, don't try to evaluate the set by wondering if they used a faulty
compression algorithm, just because it takes 56 CDs (not 53). That is a
useless calculation to try off the cuff. This set is more than just a
summation of individual bytes.

The collection has two basic parts -- (1) The complete census transcription
and (2) a nationwide name index.

The complete census includes the names, ages, birthplaces columns,
occupations, and other data for every entry. This part of the set is 35
CDs, organized by region or state. In some cases, a state, such as Ohio,
may take 2 CDs, split alphabetically (i.e. A-K and L-Z). In other cases,
there may be several less populous states on a single CD, organized by
region. These CDs are used when you want to focus your searches on a
particular state. Searches like this can take advantage of wildcard
characters in names (a BIG help!), and other features not available in the
other half of the set.

The second half of the collection is a national index, organized
alphabetically by last name into 20 CDs. This enables you to search the
entire census for a given name, across all states. The downside is that you
cannot use wildcards for this kind of search (never did figure out why this
limitation, but no big deal, provided you know the region to search -- in
that case use the other subset).

The 56th CD is the software required to access the collection.

There is an advanced search feature that looks like it could be very
powerful to do a word co-location search, but I have not used that yet, so I
won't comment.

For searches in both subsets, you can refine your search by approximate
birth year (with user selectable tolerance intervals around the desired
year, i.e., +/- 5 years), by sex, by birthplace, and other parts of the
census record.

I have already used it to knock down several brick walls, and will
continually refer to it in the future. I just wish that ALL census
collections had been done this way and were this easy to use.

No, it does not have the census images, but if they had tried that, they
would have not been able to get it on even 5500 CDs, let alone 55.

Yes, you have to put up with occasional transcription errors, but much of
that comes from the census itself, not the process of creating this data
base.

Yes, it only runs under Windows, but with VirtualPC and other emulators, Mac
users shouldn't have a problem. I have a Mac G3 (my primary machine) and a
Compaq to run software like this, and it is a perfect combination. I can
search the 1880 collection and then go online via my Mac to find the census
images on the Ancestry.com web site.

Bottom line, this is a GREAT source of information for just about any
genealogist. The $49 price is the best bargain there is out there. For
those you might think that $49 is too much to pay, then use the one down at
the local FHC. However, my guess is that most genealogists spend at least
that much on postage and other fees over the course of a year, so they
shouldn't cringe at the price. To have it on your desktop whenever you need
it is worth more than the $49 they are charging. Personally, I would have
paid ten times that amount.

other than a few "down times" and minor technical problems it's been
great. I use the MrSid plug in from Lizard Tech (free download) and
have few complaints. There are other censuses available but just
haven't had time to use them. The complete package from Ancestry ran
$99.95 for a year. I would imagine it would be very slow using a
regular dialup modem but I spend days looking these things up for the
Wynn/Winn name (possible book). A DSL line makes it fairly fast.
Also saves me the trip I was making to the Federal Archives once or
twice a week.

I also subscribed to Genealogy.com's 1910 census (I think) and found
it slow and the index full of errors. It's extremely slow if you
need to go to a particular ED & page.

Randy,

I recently purchased the 1880 census from the LDS Church. The CD's include
an alphabetized index (20 CD's), a viewer (1 CD) and 35 geographical area
CD's. I randomly put one in my Mac to do a get info. They are formatted ISO
9660, and the one I put in had 586.9MB on disk. That seems very full to me.
One of my few frustrations with the LDS chirch CD's is the difficulty in
scrolling down. My lap top has a 20x CD-rom 128 MB ram and a 400mhx

There is, in fact, no practical limit to the size of a chart, but when you
try to do something that requires it to be manipulated graphically by the
operating system as a single unit, you will run into QuickTime's 455 inch
limitation. This applies to saving it as a graphic, and it also applies to
printing it on a single large page. (If you were to print it out on a
bazillion letter size pages, you wouldn't have a problem.)

You may be in luck, though. Since Reunion says your chart is only (only!)
446.30 inches long, you are probably going over the 455 inch limit because
you have the Include Frame option checked, which will tack on the white
space to the right of your chart. If you uncheck that option, you will
probably be successful saving it as a graphic, if you save it as
PICT...JPEG probably would result in a file too large (multigigabyte prior
to compression) for Reunion to handle.

I made my web pages using the family group sheet, and all the note entries
are shown. Reunion 7 built all the family group sheet pages and indexes. I

I'm assuming that you are creating Web Family Cards. If this is the
case, no, you can't automatically include notes directly on the Web
Family Card. The Web Family Cards have limited space and aren't meant
to include all the details for a person. Their main purpose is to be
used as a navigational screen with enough details to show where you
are in the family.

However, you can include Person Sheets with the Web Family Cards. The
Person Sheets will allow you to include the Notes and any other
additional fields that won't fit on the Web Familiy Cards.

Hi Emily,

Are you using Reunion 7? If so, please check out the manual again. Search
for "web". Read all of the associated articles. Start by getting a clean
pad of paper, and start jotting down notes. Do you want to publish web
cards? A register report? Person sheets? Don't know what these are? Time to
surf the web!

I use web cards exclusively on our family site, which is located at
http://www.geocities.com/~dkhowell. An example of a neat register report
site is http://www.geocities.com/~buckalew. Another is http://www.ehfa.org.
Does anyone out there have a site that utilizes person sheets? I have
further customized my site because my hobby is HTML, but Reunion itself
produces attractive and functional pages. Give it a try!

Also, you'll need to think about other issues for web tree publishing, like
privacy filters. Reunion 6 (if I remember correctly!) and 7 has a privacy
filter. I set mine to only print the full name *only* of any
relative/ancestor born after 1900. This protects the living in your tree,
and is a *must* for publishing on the web (and sending gedcoms to
"strangers", IMHO).

Browse other sites. What do you like about them? Dislike? Make notes!

Where are you going to house your site? Do you still need to apply for a
site? I'm on Geocities. I had the choice of getting free space there and
producing a "flat" web site (that is, all pages and files in one directory
- available in Reunion 7), or pay $4.95 per month for a site with
subdirectory ability and no pop-up advertising (I chose the latter).

How are you going to upload your site? Geocities has a site upload
component that is free, but I prefer Fetch! A 15-day free trial is
available at http://fetchsoftworks.com/

Finally - play around with Reunion! Experiment with the different
backgrounds, fonts, colors, options. Write down what you like. Create and
recreate. This should be fun, a labor of love. Not labor.

Think about the points above and play around a bit with the software. If
you have any questions, I am happy to help.

Good luck!

Subject: RE Putting tree online

Hello Emily: It wasn't clear whether you were asking about CREATING a
website or about sending your Gedcom File to one of the four "Gedcom
collecting sites. Both "Creating" or "submitting" will put your data in
front of other researchers

I am a person who wanted to avoid the time and stress needed to create a
personal website. From this BIAS I can say that most personal websites that
I have visited have not shown the variety of display modalities that the
RootsWeb gedcom display site, called WorldConnect, can offer.

The home page is at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/

The "Global Search" URL is http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

If you have trouble there is a bulletin board which will often return an
Email response as well as a board posting within a few hours.

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/script/board/rw/topics.rw.worldconnect/25/next

Don't be concerned about the "ancestry.com" in the URL. RootsWeb had to
turn to the "dark side" to keep operating because there were not enough
voluntary donations.

The "home page" is where you can read the procedure for sending "up" a
Gedcom file. There are also a series of FAQs. One popular topic deals with
the idea that YOU own the data and can edit it or pull it off at a moments
notice. You can guard your "tree" from data harvesters by denying download
privileges to other viewers.

The Global search link is where you put in the personal data that you know
about a person. An added feature is that if you get too many hits on
"SMITH, John" there is a window where you can enter info about the spouse.
The name can be in any form: JONES, Jane or Jane JONES or just jane or
jones. You can further narrow down the hits by specifying b. or d. dates
and the uncertainty you prefer. That will eliminate the rather useless
postings that have no dates what-so-ever.

IN SUMMARY: I'm told that Reunion can build webcards that you can send to
your own FREE website hosted by Rootsweb. That's one way to go. The other
has already been discussed above. Anyone wishing my opinion on
www.Familysearch.org or Familytree maker or Ancestry Family tree gedcom
collecting sites are welcome to contact me. I have nothing good to say
about them but I won't waste that kind a space on this forum.

www.GenServ.com charges a modest $6/yr fee for seniors but it has a smaller
database than WorldConnect and it's display choices are not as great. This
was the Gedcom "displayer" that I used before WorldConnect was created.

I am working on that right now and plan to use:

1. Various web reports that Reunion generates since both PCs and Macs can
use those and the links and photos will be a nice.

2. I am using PrintToPDF for family stories and memories with pictures on
the pages. This program will convert your word processor document so that
Adobe Acrobat Reader will read it. Both Windows and Macs come with Acrobat
Reader. These pages could be put in a folder called the "Scrapbook Folder".

You could also convert Reunion charts and reports with PrintToPDF. I believe
the chart should not be too large for this. I have done 1 or 2 page charts
with pictures and quite a bit of information and that works well. Or to put
a number of generations in a small area you can use just the names so that
more fit on a page or two. This kind of chart helps people understand the
generations.

PrintToPDF is shareware and can be gotten at: http://www.jwwalker.com

3. Also, I am creating web picture galleries with iViewMedia Pro. The newest
version is available from www.iviewmultimedia.com and the older version is
included with CD writer software, "Toast 5". This is the new Toast version
and maybe you have it already. iView Media Pro will produce a web page with
thumbnail pictures in which you can click on the thumbnail to have it open
full size.

Even scanned documents, videos and recordings can be put in these galleries
along wit the pictures or separately.

4. I might put some folders with extra photos on the CD, too.

5. I prefer Internet Explorer in daily use but if you want to make a home
page separately and then make links to the Table of Contents or TOC (an item
or icon, in each web report, has TOC in the title) web report for each
branch of the family - you can do that with Netscape Communicator. It is
fairly easy to use but will take a little study.

Good luck. This should accomplish what you want to do. Someone here has a
web site that shows some good examples. Maybe he will give his web address
again. I seem to have lost it.

Joan,

Printers and ZIP's have become very inexpensive so I would reccommend
that you buy new ones with USB interfaces instead of buying adapters.
Adapters can be almost as costly and do not work as reliably as one might
want.

If you buy your computer from an Apple store they will transfer your old
hard disk contents to your new hard disk. Otherwise, you can stuff your
family file using "Stuffit" and email it to yourself. Don't download it
until you have the new computer up and running. The instructions for
getting the iMac running consist of three pictures!

As for your old computer, I would donate it to a grandchild, niece,
nephew, or a daycare in your area. Introducing children to computers
when they are very young is a good "thing." And they don't care if it is
a little dated.

The browser in that version of AOL is not very capable though and can't do

Your connection speed is a function of your modem speed and the noise on
your phone line. For really blazing speed on the internet, you can use cable
or DSL if available in your area. The iMac comes with 56k modem built in.
You can use your current ZIP drive and printer by buying an appropriate
connector/convertor USB to serial. However, printers are now so inexpensive,
a new USB printer might cost you the same. I bought a new extra USB ZIP
drive for my new iMac so I could leave the scsi one on my SE and use it for
my PB520 also. USB to scsi converters are more expensive than buying a new
USB ZIP.

Hi Joan,

With your Performa, check for Mac User Groups in your area. Some of them
refurbish the older computers and then donate them to school children who
can not afford them. Save all the Performa software and send it along
because the biggest problem we have is software to go along with the
computer.

Otherwise sell it through the Penny Saver

That was a challenge!

Thanks to a clue from Ehsan Saffari in the FileMaker Pro Talk archives: FileMaker doesn't support it natively, but you tell FileMaker to run an AppleScript on itself to do it.

This works for a single record. You'll need to wrap a loop around it to do the whole database:

1. Create a text field called Path. This will contain the path to the image.

2. Create a text field called AppleScript (you could experiment with making this a Global). Put the following into it:

set temp to cell "Container" of current record
set cell "Path" to temp as text

(Where Container is the name of your image field. Leave the quotes there.)

3. Create a Script which does a Perform AppleScript on the field from step 2.

4. Run the script. The Path field will be populated with the path to the image.

Obviously you can now export the Path field.

Cheers!

Reunion uses an asterisk (*) to distinguish cousins in the
descendancy from cousins in the ascendancy. While on the surface I
have no problem with this, I am bothered by the fact that when

listed at the very bottom of the list instead of with the other
cousins. Does anyone know of a way to allow the program to list all

If these duplicates have unique information, you could merge them.
First, choose File -> Save a Copy, to make a copy of your family
file. Then, mark the duplicates. To do this, either go to each family
card and choose Find -> Mark or choose Find -> Mark Groups and mark
the descendants of a couple or a person's ancestors all at once.
After all the duplicates are marked, choose Find -> Match & Merge.
You should find matches for marked people and compare them with
marked people.

For more information, click the Manual button and search for "match merge."

Subject: Re: iMac -new computer

1) I think you can use up to OS 8.6 on your present computer, which
should help (I use it all the time on my 9500)

2) But don't let me stop you from getting an iMac! They are superb,
and the $999 model is a good deal. You might also consider the used
iMacs - look in the back of MacWorld or MacAddict magazines.

3) Your Zip drive itself will not work on an iMac. Your choices are to
a) buy a new USB Zip drive (the old cartridges will work fine)
b) Get a SCSI-to-USB adapter. I have not used these,
and don't much trust them (combine SCSI voodoo with USB? No thanks!)

4) If your printer is serial or LocalTalk, it will not work either.
If it is SCSI, same as above. If it is serial, you can get a
serial-to-USB converter, and these do usually work. For LocalTalk,
you can get, from ASANTE, a LocalTalk-to-Ethernet converter, and
these work very well, but cost about $90-100, and I haven't seen any
on eBay. Generally, inkjet printers are cheap enough that it probably
makes sense to just buy a new, USB one. I would get a HP, not an
Epson. HP usually "just works" whereas there has been a lot of
trouble about drivers for the Epsons.

5) One thing you could do with your old equipment is to leave it set
up as it is, and connect it to the iMac via Ethernet! Then you could
use your Zip drive and printer by just transferring the files to the
old machine! Both your old machine and the iMac have built-in
Ethernet, although the old one requires an AAUI adapter (look on
eBay).

Good luck!

With the 6116CD?? you could upgrade to 7.5.5 with a free download of
software from Apple. And you would still have the old 14 inch monitor, I
think, with its single 640 x 480 resolution; it may be on its last legs by
now. The iMac is much nicer.

There are adaptors to deal with the old, SCSI Zip Drive and the printer.
Some adaptors are not so good. If you do not get specific recommendations
on make/model from other ReunionTalkers, you'll get all the help you need
from an e-mail list dedicated to iMacs. You can find a link for it at Dan
Knight's web site: http://www.lowendmac.com/index.shtml Look in the blue
column to the right of the home page.

Back to the printer. There are two things to look at. Some Epson printers,
like my Stylus Color 740 came with two or three ports, including the old
serial port for Macs and the USB port for new Macs and PCs. Also, if you
buy your new iMac from "participating dealers," including some catalog
houses, you can get a Lexmark printer with a rebate. For two models, you
end up with a free printer; for a third model, you end up paying about $30
or $50 extra. This deal goes to October 14, I believe. Check the Apple web
site for details. CompUSA and MicroCenter are participating dealers as
well. If you buy from a catalog house, you'll also get some extra RAM free,
but with a $30 installation charge. Over the long run, you'll be happier
with a RAM upgrade. Get as much as you can afford now, but round up to at
least 256MB, meaning an extra 128. You (anyone) can easily install it.

With your Reunion files on a Zip cartridge and with a adaptor, you can move
your files to the iMac. Or buy a Zip Drive for the iMac. Some folks have
good luck e-mailing a file as an attachment to themselves from the old
machine and picking it up from the new one. And with a little adaptor for
ethernet on the old Mac and a cross-over cable, you can hook the two
computers up for moving files.

If you keep the old Mac in semi-retirement as an extra machine, its hard
drive can become a "backup" for your files, but not as secure as the CDs you
can make with the iMac and which you can store in another house.

Good Luck! I'd be happy to take more questions off-list.

2. This is a work in progress--parts are finished and parts are still "under

Should you like a copy of the template please indicate in your message the

If you want the stepchildren and biological children all to appear on
the same family card, you must create duplicate child buttons.

To distinguish the stepchildren from the biological children on the
family card and in reports, you can assign a child status to the
stepchildren. To do this, choose Options -> Child Status and rename
one of the statuses to stepchild. Then choose Edit -> Children and
select stepchild from the status pop-up menu. A colored ring will
appear around the child button and the word stepchild will appear
beside the child's name in your reports. However, the child status
will not be included on the chart. To add it, double-click on the
appropriate chart box and manually add it.

For more information, click the Manual button and search for "child status."

This is typical. Saving a JPEG in Reunion can take a lot of RAM,
especially if the chart is big. As a rule of thumb, you can use the
following to calculate the amount of RAM needed to save a chart as a
JPEG file...

W (inches) * H (inches) * 15552 (bytes/sq. inch) = Amount of RAM (bytes)

If I understand what the original poster wanted, you can make the
desired chart in a few steps and using a drawing program in addition
to Reunion. Something like this: go to the source person's father
and make a left-to-right pedigree chart. Go to the source person's
mother and make a left-to-right pedigree chart; then from the Tree
menu select Drag > Global. Now by dragging the second generation
toward the left you can flip the chart around making it run
right-to-left. (I find it hard to get predictable results in one try
-- you'll probably have to select Drag > Generation and touch up the
spacing for each generation.)

Finally make a third pedigree chart for the source person. Double
click the father's box and delete it; likewise for the mother --
you'll end up with a "pedigree chart" showing only the source person.

Now open a drawing program. Using "Copy Chart" (Command-C) in
Reunion and Paste (Command-P) in the drawing program, copy and paste
all three pedigree charts into a single drawing. Position them as
you like and add lines connecting source person to mother and father.

To expand a little on Tricia's answer, once the tree is drawn, you can do
editing by hand to achieve the desired result, but it can be pretty
tedious. Basically, if you select a branch drag mode from the lower left
corner of the chart window, you can click on the parents' boxes and drag
their branches to where you want them to sit. It would probably help to
zoom out to a scale to see the whole tree at once -- try selecting 5:1 for
a start from the lower left corner of the window. Also, you might need to
start by moving the father's line as far as you can to the left to give
your mother's line room to move over, then you can leapfrog the father's
line over to the right. If this doesn't work for you, there's a few tricks
that can be used to keep an expanded working area for the chart that will
allow these movements.

Reunion can draw the Pedigree Chart in the Top-To-Bottom,
Left-To-Right, and Waterfall orientations which can be selected
through the Tree menu once the chart opens. It can't draw a chart
that shows your mother's line on the left, your father's line on the
right, and you in the middle.

Ray,

Perhaps a little more explanation would help.

Do you mean that you want to hide the maiden name from view? Or from the
name structure itself? Or is this only for print purposes?

Depending on the number of records, you could put the maiden name in the
nickname field. But the 64 dollar question is why? The proper nomenclature
is to use the maiden name for all married females. The children then take
the name of the father unless specified otherwise.

I did one for my Mom which had her in the middle. I was able to do
that because I put her ancestors on the right and her descendants on
the left. I enlarged her box and picture. My siblings and I were to
the left of her, our kids were left of that and my granddaughter was
on the far left.

On her right the chart extended several generations (10?) so she was
not exactly in the middle but a bit off center. It looks great.
