Subject: Appleworks and RTF
From my recent efforts to create a detailed descendant report in Appleworks
6.1.2 and correcpondence with Reunion Help, I determined that the 6.1.2
upgrade took away the RTF correction. In an effort to avoid going back to
6.04, I reinstalled my Appleworks 5 disk only to find that Reunion will not
default to Reunion 5 if Reunion 6 is on the disk. So I created my descendant
report in plain text. Then, when Simple Text could not open it, I translated
it to Appleworks and opened it successfully. I don't know what I might be
missing without RTF, but this roundabout way opened it.

My problem doesn't just relate to Oregon pioneers; if it did, flags
would be the obvious solution. This problem stems from the fact that
nearly ALL of those pioneers' descendants also have references to
Oregon somewhere (several thousand records in my family file).

I'm not "blaming Reunion" for *anything*. What I'm doing is
suggesting that they implement a function that is *very* common in
record-based search tools: the ability to specify whether the search
criteria are case-sensitive. It is a very reasonable request. A lot
of people would find it handy, considering the databases we are
discussing by their nature have huge quantities of person-names,
place-names, titles, and other words which are typically found in
mixed case. Oftentimes, however, these mixed-case words have
homographs, such as Miller and miller, Fletcher and fletcher, North
and north, etc.

I'm not really interested in getting into the whole abbreviations
debate again, but suffice it to say that whether you like them or
not, abbreviations are standard procedure for most genealogists. The
tools we use should therefore accommodate them.

Subject: Find Anything, part 2
While I'm at it, I'll suggest another improvement to "Find Anything":
the ability to match whole words, or partial words. This would enable
a person searching for the word "Iona", for example, to avoid
rummaging through search results that contain words with -ional
suffixes like "international" and "generational". Not the greatest
example, but it's the first one that comes to mind.

Subject: "Born before marriage"
A VERY small complaint.
When I have a couple who were married in the beginning of the year and they
have a child near the end of the year Reunion gives me the message that the
child was born before the parent's marriage. This creates an unwarranted
presumption about the parents behavior. Most gestation periods are less than
one year (thank goodness!) Well, I can at least give them the benefit of
doubt.

Subject: Importing Gedcom
I received quite a large Gedcom from someone and when I try to import it
into a new chart Reunion (v. 6) crashes. It crashes during the "checking
data" phase. Assuming the file is okay, I tried upping the memory of
Reunion to no avail.
Should I assume that there is some incompatibility with the file he
sent, should I wait for the upgrade to Reunion 7 I ordered, or is there
a secret I don't know about importing Gedcom files. This is the first
one I've tried to import.
The file is 2.8 MB. I have a G3 with plenty of hard disk space. I'm also
a fairly new Reunion user.
Thanks,
Jennifer

I am running Appleworks 6.1.2 with the latest upgrade(s) and it can read and
save RTF. It is in the Open or Save As dialog boxes--you click on the down
arrow for File Format in either dialog box and you will see RTF. When you
choose that it converts to RTF as it is saving. When you click on such a
saved document on the desktop, it converts from RTF (you can see the little
message flash saying it is converting). If you save out as an RTF file, you
will then have to open it from the application you want to use. To have
Appleworks open an RTF document ( I think the only logical Appleworks
modules for RTF would be Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and maybe DataBase)
in Appleworks coming from another program, use the Open dialog box in the
File menu. Don't simply double click on the file directly. The 6.1.2 update
also gives you the option of reading and saving Microsoft Word or Excel
files (using the DataViz translators). Appleworks 5 came with the Dataviz
translators. Appleworks 5 didn't; but if you already have Appleworks 5 you
can still use the translators from AW5 with version 6 by doing a custom
install. However, the 6.1.2 upgrade gives you the latest Word and Excel
translators. You can buy the latest version of Dataviz separately to get
all of them. I teach courses in Appleworks at Washtenaw Community College.

The type of book or report is called an Ortsippenbuch. There is no formal
definition of a single, standard format for an Ortsippenbuch; however,
there are some commonly used formats that are readily recognized as
"Ortsippenbucher". The main element is that each family is fully
documented (parents & children) with forward and backward links (from
parents back to their parents and from children forward to their
subsequent families).
It basically amounts to a printout of family cards from a Reunion
database with appropriate linkage information so the reader can readily
find the family cards for the parents (when they were children) and the
subsequent family cards for the children.

I fully agree that abbreviations in genealogy are not a good idea at all.
Abbreviations are only acceptable when the author explains the
meaning of an abbreviation at least once in the beginning of each
documents. Unfortunately, some authors tend to believe that using
lots of abbreviations in a genealogy shows intelligence, expertize
and knowledge. May be they are just too lazy to resolve the
abbreviations.
Honestly, I think it's quite silly to spend one hour
memorizing/looking up an attached list of abbreviations, when it just
would take 30seconds longer to read the expanded text.
Genealogy should be simple and authors shoud take the math out of the
reading. The documents we create today should be readable in 300
years from now.
Those of you, who may have done paleography of old German script
understand the extreme difficulties one has to go through when trying
to figure out certain abbreviations. Looking up a word in a foreign
language dictionary is one thing, but which normal dictionary shows
that "g." means born in German, and "t." means baptized.
Can you imagine the problems our descendants have to go through
trying to decipher this many years from now. May be at one time, the
cost of paper justified abbreviations. I don't wish to invite "green"
comments, but I think the days are gone, when it was too expensive to
store the fully expanded version of a genealogy on paper or on a hard
disk, and to write everything down as a TLA.
Therefore, whenever possible, please avoid TLAs and use the expanded versions.

Subject: auto source for existing entries
please add this to the Reunion wish list:
I'd like to be able to add a source reference to an *existing* record with
a single click (or better yet, be able to add it automatically to any
person card that I change).
as it is now, I need to:
1) click on the person to bring up the person card 2) choose the source
reference (or click in the area and paste a copied source) 3) click the
'General' checkbox.
it seems trivial to boil it down to 1 step, but I just went through
someone's gedcom with almost 1,000 entries in it... which happens once or
twice a month to me.
those extra clicks *really* add up.
an alternate idea would be to have the ability to add a source (marked
'General') to a found set.

Scream all you like, but I do NOT use the Source field. I prefer to place
all my sources in the NOTES field, in a dated, standardized format of my
own design.
That said, it would be REALLY nice to be able to use standard Macintosh key
shortcuts to modify text (i.e."command + b" for bold, "command + i" for
italics, etc.). As you know, in Reunion one must first type the text, then
go back and highlight it, then go to the TEXT STYLE drop down menu and
select the style.
This is REALLY annoying, and even if you select a style before you start to
type, it reverts back to plain.
C'mon guys... this is the 21st Century... Can't we get these shortcuts?
These shortcuts are universal on virtually every Mac application (except
Reunion).

what people seem to be asking for re: this is for Reunion to use standard
OS (even better, stylized) text objects. currently, it seems to be using
'dialog' style text boxes, for which the operating system has far fewer
hooks.
I'd have to chime in and agree with them... sure would be nice to have my
text tools available (i.e. my 'text cleaning') for use with such fields.

Kay,
Virtual PC has a manual in pdf format (Acrobat Reader - free software
from Adobe). I have found it very useful in trying to understand
Virtual PC. Let me know if you cannot find it, it is entitled
"Virtual PCĊ 4.0 Manual.pdf". Copy and paste the title without the
brackets into a file search to find it on your hard drive. I believe
it installs with the purchased program, if yours did not then you
might want to contact Connectix at support@xxxxxxxxx_com.
You do not say what version of Virtual PC you have, for detailed
assistance this information will be needed.
These instructions refer to Virtual PC version 4. To move files
easily between Windows 98 and Mac OS, create a "Shared Folder".
First, in Mac OS, create a folder where you will place files you want
to access from both OSs, I keep mine in the Virtual PC folder but it
can be stored anywhere you like and can be named anything you like, I
call mine Virtual PC Shared Folder.
Then open Virtual PC and click the Edit Menu, choose the drive
preferences at the bottom of the menu. The preference dialog box
will have an item called "Shared Menus", click on it and configure it
to use the Shared Menu folder you created.
The Shared Menu will show up in Windows Explorer, listed on the left.
(Windows Explorer can be found by clicking on Start/Programs/Windows
Explorer.)
Hope this helps.

I just upgraded to v; 4.0.2 so these notes apply to it. In your VPC folder
you should find an Instruction Manual in Adobe Acrobat Reader format.
Download that. If you don't have the Reader download it first. It's free
and the download command is there for you. I'm assuming that you have VPC
v: 4. If not the instructions may be a little different. Create a new
folder on your desktop. Give it a name like "Shared Files" or something.
Start VPC. In the first screen to come up click on the "Settings" button.
Click on "Shared Folder" to highlight it. In the menu window on the right
side search for the folder you just created and click on it. Next Click on
"COM2PORT" to highlight it. Click on "Select Mac Serial Port" Pull down the
menu that goes with it and select "Printer Port" Push the "OK" button. Now
all should work well for you.
Good luck.

Yes Yes Yes! But, it should be well documented. Giving an uninitiated

giving a chimp a bottle of laxatives--you don't know what will happen

I definitely agree with Lisa on this one. Because the shortcuts are so
ubiquitous now in Mac programs. It seems strange to me that Reunion, after
all a Mac only program, should not yet conform to this Mac 'standard'. As I
have said before, it is a small thing but one that means a lot in practice
because we are so used to these shortcuts we can hardly stop ourselves using
them anyway when typing notes in Reunion...and that generally means odd
things happen and, if only momentarily, you wonder why!
With your next revision, please give us the shortcuts, Reunion. It would be
in the best Mac tradition to do so!

The short cuts are there but they are shift-command +b for bold, and shift
command +i for italic. Also shift-command +u gives underline. However
shift-command with < or > usually used to change font size doesn't work!
However a feature I would like to see is the ability to underline one of the
forenames. I have used this previously on wp based descendant lists whenever
individuals are generally known by the their second or third forename. Shift
-command +u doesn't work in this location.

Subject: AppleWorks 6.1.2 Warning!
Greetings,
Apple recently announced the release of AppleWorks 6.2. This version
is now for sale and can be downloaded as a free update for those who
are currently using AppleWorks 6.
The AppleWorks 6.2 installer automatically senses which version of
the Mac OS you're running. If you use Mac OS X, AppleWorks 6.2 is
installed. If you use Mac OS 8.1 - 9.1, AppleWorks 6.1.2 is installed.
Unfortunately, when AppleWorks 6.1.2 is installed, a faulty RTF
translator is also installed. This new, faulty RTF translator will
not open Reunion reports longer than a few pages.
As you know, Reunion creates text reports by saving them to your
hard disk as RTF files and then sending an AppleScript to open the
report in your word processor. AppleWorks 6.1.2 begins to convert
Reunion's RTF report file but never finishes (a spinning cursor
appears and the report never opens). You'll have to press
Command-Control-esc to "force quit" AppleWorks.
Unless/until Apple fixes this problem, we recommend staying with
AppleWorks 6.0.4.

You can do this in Reunion 7. After you've marked everyone, choose
Options -> Set General Sources and check Marked People. Use the
Choose pop-up menu to either create a new source or select an

I will not scream, as Reunion was designed to be flexible. If you can
find a way to use Reunion as your genealogical tool, I'm happy --
whether it's a format of your own design or somebody else's.

Reunion uses text modification keyboard shortcuts similar to
FileMaker, QuarkXpress, and other applications that are not text
editors per se. Namely...
Shift + Command B for bold text
Shift + Command I for italic text
Shift + Command U for underline text
Shift + Command T for plain text
These, and a bazillion other keyboard shortcuts, are in the Shortcuts
section of the manual.

There's no need to use the Text Style pop-up menu, but you are
correct that the text needs to be highlighted prior to applying a
style.
I'll make a note in the wish list regarding your desire to use a text
style keyboard shortcut and then have the style apply to text typed
thereafter. That's a good idea, and I noticed that it is implemented\nin the aforementioned applications.

Person ID Numbers and Family ID Numbers are fixed and cannot be
changed. The ID number each person and family is assigned is
determined by the order in which they are entered. The ID numbers in
Reunion do not denote any relationships. They are simply assigned for
cross-referencing purposes.
If you want to assign a specific ID numbers, enter the number in the User
ID field (in the Name section of the Edit Person window). To have the User

S&N are not only publishing ALL of the UK census, but have a large range of
CDs including many parish record transcripts, Phillimores marriage
extracts, trade directories, maps and gazetteers. Virtually all their CDs
are in Acrobat format, which work perfectly even on an LCIII. The next area
of the 1891 census after London is Yorkshire ( with special prices for
pre-orders) and they are buying another special film scanner to work on
other census years at the same time.

I have not done this to try... but this should work... if you add a break
<br> or paragraph <p> tag to the end of your sources in reunion, it should
put them in the exported web pages and then display properly on the web.
The only problem is that the tags will be visible to you in reunion, but you

Kay,
I too use Virtual PC to read various PC only CDs. I have version 4.0 of
VPC, but before that, I had version 2.1.
As far as printing goes, I simply click on the print button in whatever
program I am using and it prints the document.
I move documents back and forth by simply dragging and dropping, from
either the VPC windows page to my desktop, or vice versa. Sometimes I get
a beep and error message, but when I try it the second time, it usually
works. Sometimes I get the error message but it goes ahead and makes the
copy.
VPC also has something called "My Suitcase", which I read somewhere is to
be used to transfer files between VPC and the mac desktop.
There is a help button on the strip across the top (sorry - I don't know
exactly what it is called) that takes one to a help menu.
All in all, I am surprised how easily VPC has worked on my mac (a G4).

I have some surnames that are two separate words, i.e., Van Aken/Van
Auken. Reunion sorts these by the second word - Aken/Auken.
Should I be entering these names differently so that they will be
sorted correctly?
Also, I have some ancestors from whom I am descended by more than one
path. Reunion will only list one "relationship" when I may have two
or more different relationships with that particular individual. For
instance, he may be my 24G Grandfather through one path and my 23G
Grandfather through another, but only one of the relationships will
be listed. It seems the further I go back, the more likelihood there
is of this situation occurring. Is there any way to have Reunion
list all the relationships between the source and any one individual
in the database?

Further perflexity--I ordered the Pedigree Resource File CD because
FamilySearch said that it would contain sources on the family. I figured that
would mean a list of film #s for BMD records, state file #s for certificates,
census records, etc. which would save me time. But the source list only says
1) Pedigree R. file #19 and 2) Broderbund Software, Family Tree.
That isn't helpful. Am I missing something? Will all the CDs give only

Kay;
Virtual PC 3.0 will allow you to use all those awful PC CD's, but while
you're in your virutal PC world, you CANNOT print to your Mac printers.
Sharing files... while in Windows emulation, you can map any Mac volume and
transfer data there. While in Mac mode you CANNOT transfer data to a
Windows volume.
The only work around is if you're on a network, you can transfer files back
and forth to a network drive.
It's possible that if you have a USB port on your Mac, you can plug in an
external USB drive (Zip, hard drive, even a floppy) and transfer files that
way ... no guarantees, but it SHOULD work.
Good luck.

I seem to have no problems. I'm running an iMac under 9.something and
the latest VirtualPC running in WindowsME. I expect what I do will
apply to anything else. I have Reunion 7 and the 1881 census.
First off, I don't bother to go through the "shared" trip, there's no
need. I open up Windows and the Census, and then instead of printing
directly -- there are problems with the census format -- I save
whatever I want to save in WindowsME(C:) or any folder therein and
save under RTF (Rich Text Format) giving the file a name. I then hold
down the Apple button, go up to Control which is now across the top,
and click on Windows Mode. Now VPC is just a Mac window and I can
drag the file from WindowsME across on to the Apple Desktop. I now
open the RTF file with Word and, voilà, the 1881 document appears up
on my Mac screen in all its glory. If I want to go back to WindowsME
I select VirtualPC and I'm back in 1881. probably Full Screen Mode.
If I'm still in Windowed Mode then go through the Apple/Control/Full
Screen Mode drill again.
Now, if only someone could tell me who my g-grandmother was, the one
mother to Blanche Sophia WALMESLEY born 31 Mar 1859 (?) and probably
the daughter of William WALMESLEY of Ingatestone Hall, Essex . . .

Subject: abbreviations etc
Abbreviations, etc.
To catalog a great amount of information within Reunion I create a child
card <unknown> without any last name and indent the title in the first
name space by about 4 spacebars.
For instance "Information" or " about this file" entered in the first
name space with 5 spacebars ALWAYS brings this card to the very top of
the Reunion index where it can always be found. (I hate getting gedcoms
and nowhere in the file does it say who created it or how or what).
Next I have cards (I have as children of Information) such as
"abbreviations", "definitions", "soundex", "disconnected persons"
"research codes" "notes on research" etc. (any misc. info.) entered with
4 space bars in the first name space which places all these items just
under information at the top of the Reunion index.
Next I have general histories, including chunks of whole books, which
belong to whole groups of families such as "Battle of Flodden Field",
"The White Ship" of "Battle of Hastings" (where one could have many
families involved on both sides) entered similarly with 4 or 3 space
bars. This is good so that such events or histories do not get lost in
a note field on a single family card. These histories give very good
overviews to different periods and places.
It does not even matter if these information cards are connected or
disconnected to family groupings. Usually if connected below the
youngest person they will never show up in an ascendancy chart.
Maybe Lester should at some point include a method of including this
type of material within the file, but I have found that this works just
fine.

I'm using VPC 2.1.1, which has Windows 95, and an Epson 740i. It shows as

timely fashion) until I click back and forth from VPC to the finder a time
or two. Then I see a bar showing it's spooling. It usually starts printing
faster if I then go to the Epson print monitor from the menu in the upper
right corner. It's a pain, but what can you expect from Windoze.
The VPC manual I got says
Select a printer in the Chooser as you would for your Macintosh system.
The PC uses Epson or Postscript.
Virtual PC automatically recognizes your Mac printer (if installed) and
formats the PC printing output for either PostScript or Epson.
You could check in the printers folder or printing under PC Preferences -
both under My Computer.

You don't have to enter the names differently, but you can till Reunion
whether to sort by the first or second part of the surname.
I have Reunion 6 and it works as follows:
Under menu item "Options", select "Indexing..." A box will pop up allowing
you to select how you want last names to be indexed. Choose either "Sort on
entire last name" or "Don't sort on prefix words" (you can also set the size
of the prefix you want it to recognize).
I'm sure Reunion 7 must have a similar feature.

I'm glad that cleared it up. I teach Appleworks as well as introductory
courses "for mature adults" on both Mac and PC at the local community
college and it's amazing how many people (especially PC people) never
learned how to use the modifier keys properly unless someone showed them how
or explained it in detail in writing as I did on the list. Many assume that
you hold them down all at once, or hit them in sequence one at a time, and
neither of those methods work. I've never seen any written manual or online
help that explains the procedure. They usually simply tell you what the key
combinations are. Since you were getting the letter on the screen, my guess
would be that you were hitting the command key, letting it go, then hitting
shift and the letter (if you were getting a capital letter) or hitting the
shift key, letting it go and then hitting the letter (if you were getting a
lower case letter).

I am lurking on the list. I do not consider myself a genealogist. I have
only used an early version of Reunion (ver 4) to type in my known
information. I've not used any CD's. However, if the CD's are "dual format"
( I doubt they are) then you should be able to use them. From reading
comments my guess is that they are for PC (Windows). If this is the case,
then if you get Connectix Virtual PC you will be able to use them. You can
copy and paste between the virtual PC desktop (where you would be viewing
the information on the CD's) and your Mac desktop, because Virtual PC is
merely another program running under the MacOS. My understanding is that is
runs quite fast. You should have no trouble at all running VPC using a G4
with version 9.04 and 128 MB of memory. The program costs between $150 and
$200 US.

My question to her was, what would she suggest I use to access the

She suggested Connectix Virtual PC.
My question to the group - has anyone had any experience with Virtual

No, you can't link a separate source to a date and a place. However,
to handle situations where you need to distinguish the source of a
date separately from the source of a place, specify in the Detail
field that the source you're citing only applies to the date (or
place). For example, in the Detail field you could enter something
like: "(Date only)." This need only be done in cases where you have a
date and place for a particular event, and where the source of the
date differs from the source of the place.

I purchased the LDS FamilySearch 1880 US Census & Nat'l Index without
knowing exactly what I was doing. Genealogy columnist Dick Eastman wrote a
good article about it at the end of May (article available a couple of
places including Ancestry.com). They are Windows only & the article states
that Mac users should be able to use them with a 32-bit emulator--no
guarantee. After ordering I inquired at the FHC near me. I was told a
Mac-using volunteer was available 2 evenings a month. On the appropriate
evening I talked to him. His suggestion was the Virtual PC emulator which
he thought was available with Word 95/98 for about $150 &, without for less
money for those who have Word.
I found Virtual PC with Word listed at &185. retail. My "outstanding value"
was becoming expensive. Next I requested help through my users' group
listserv. This brought suggestions & an invitation to come to a SIG meeting
where various members had Virtual PC & had used Windows CDs for genealogy,
though not this set. This would be the main topic.
An evening of q&a, demonstration, discussion & debate by these kind people
armed me with knowledge & confidence. I am shopping for my own copy of the
Virtual PC program at a "good price" and have ordered additional RAM for my
96 MB iMac with 266 MHz (mainly because RAM is CHEAP now). I know that the

Subject: Handling changed spelling of surnames
I was wondering if there is a standard procedure for handling the (not
necessarily legal) change in spelling of surnames over the centuries. Our
family name was changed to Sharon in 1900 by one of my ancestors. Prior to
that, our previous ancestors spelled their names variously as Sheron,
Sherron, Sherin and assorted other variations.
A cousin has sent me his files but he has changed all the names to reflect
the current spelling (but includes alternate spellings in the notes --
although he isn't consistent about it).
I would prefer to use the most common spelling of the time for each relative
in Reunion's main entry and use the AKA field to record alternate spellings.
My reasoning is that it will be easier to research backwards if I have some
clue as to how each individual spelled his/her name, allowing for the
illiteracy factor, clerical errors, etc.
Just curious as to how others handle this situation.

If you want adopted children to appear with their natural parents and
adoptive parents, you should enter the child with his natural parents
first. Then go to the adoptive parents family card and select Existing
Male/Female Child from the Add Child pop-up menu (the blue plus). Find the
child's name and click Link. In the Move Child window, click Duplicate.
To give you a visual clue that the child is adopted, choose Edit ->
Children to assign the adopted child status.
When you're on the child's family card (where he appears as the husband),
there will be a Parent pop-up menu between the parent buttons that will
allow you to navigate to either set of parents. To change the parents that
appear on the parent buttons, choose Edit -> Parents or select Edit Parents
from the Parent pop-up menu and check them as preferred.

It would be very useful if in some future release a field
were included which would override normal alphabetization,
in a way similar to 'custom dates', where one enters the
'interpretation' of a non-standard date, and the
interpretation is used in ordering date entries.
For example, such variant forms as 'Joslyn', 'Joslin',
'Jocelyn', 'Josselyn', 'Josseline', etc. would be used in
reports and charts, but the 'custom' alphabetization entry
(say, 'Joslin') would be used for alphabetization (with
cross-references entered in report indexes, such as
'Josselyn: see Joslin').
This would help for alphabetizations of names in foreign
languages, so that, say, 'Esterházy von Galantha' and
'Esterházy de Galantha' would be alphabetized together, and
"d'Orléans" could be alphabetized correctly, under 'O'
rather than 'D'.
This would also help such surname entries as 'Cavendish,
later Percy', which could be alphabetized under Percy and
the cross-reference would point those looking under
Cavendish to the correct place.
An additional benefit would be that one could decide not to
alphabetized on very long 'prefix' words (such as 'ferch')
while continuing to alphabetize on shorter words (like the
'Two' in 'of the Two Sicilies'.)

"1900 US Census," Venango County, Pennsylvania, FTM 1900 Census

The first source is in the top portion of the Merge Sources window and the

I use Virtual PC version 2.1.3 on a G3 266 with only 64 megabytes and
it works just fine, running Windows 95. I'm planning to upgrade to
VPC version 4 soon. For background, see the recent coverage of VPC in
that Forum on the MacFixit site:
In Windows 95 I can print to my laser, and mount any of the Mac discs
or folders (hard drive, zips, floppies and CDs) on the PC desktop, or
access them in save and open dialogs, so that I can work between the
two systems, with automatic translation between Mac and Windows.
The LDS CDs work fine on VPC. I use the British 1881 census CDs, the
British vital records CDs, and also the LDS library catalogue, which
is fabulous for discovering what genealogical records and books are
available for just about any place. By the way, DO make sure you get
the Version 3 of the LDS Resource File Viewer that is used to read
the data CDs. It has far better "advanced" search facilities than
version 2. It's about 5 pounds sterling in the UK, or you can order
it on the LDS site.
You can drag and drop between the two desktops. You can open and save
documents on the Mac from within Windows 95 applications. For
example, you can save the detail from some census records as an RTF
file, under Windows 95, and save this directly in a folder in the Mac
Hard Drive. Later you can open this in your word processor on the
Mac, and select what you want to put in Reunion, say.
If you do much work with the LDS files then see Steven Archer's LDS
Companion (windows not Mac unfortunately). Marvellous help.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/steve_archer/
One nice feature in VPC is that you can Quit VPC and save the current
state of the PC, so that when you open VPC next time you go straight
to the desktop exactly as you were at the Quit, with no dreary
display of the Windows start-up. It saves several minutes each time.
You can switch between VPC and any other Mac application using the
application switcher menu. It's all very elegant. But do read the
manual. (It's like Reunion. There's much more in it than meets the
eye.)
You can create a 500 megabyte virtual hard drive in VPC 2, which
allows you to do quite reasonable Genealogical work. I think the
limit is higher in later versions.

I think this should refer to Windows instead of Word. VPC comes in
several flavours with various versions of Windows or just DOS. If you
have a legal copy of some version of Windows you could use that and
probably save the cost of Windows.

I think the confusion arises because there are certain combinations of
the Mac OS and VPC version which allow printing and others that don't.
e.g. you can print, Mike, because printing works with OS9.0.4. It also
works with OS 8.1. The trouble starts with OS 9.1.
I'm using VPC 3.0.3/Windows 95 and OS 9.1 and cannot print (all I get is
a page of black bands). This is a known issue which was fixed in VPC
4.0.2, but not for any 3 versions. If, however, you have a version of VPC
with (minimum) Windows 98 and OS 9.1, you can print because USB is
supported in Windows 98 (minimum). You can actually install the PC USB
drivers of your printer into Windows and print without spooling to the
Mac.
I have learned all this the hard way. Just got a new iMac and printer and
went through two black cartridges trying to get it to work. A MacFixit
forum posting got me the info that I needed, that I couldn't print with
my current VPC 3.0.3/Win95 and OS 9.1 setup and needed to upgrade to VPC
4.0.2.
I hope this is a bit clearer than mud !

The help file talks about three types of printing.
Your first choice is to connect a PC printer via USB to your Mac. In
this case you need the printer drivers installed on the Virtual PC
machine and you'll print to them via that printer/driver.
Your second choice is via your Mac printer. To excercise this option
you'll setup your Mac printer as normal, then within Virtual PC
select the "Mac Printer" option (either inkjet or postscript
depending on your Mac printer). For an Epson I'd use the inkjet
option.
Your third choice is to use a PC Network printer. This presupposes
you are on a PC network. Setting that up has it's own help section.
To read more about these options, read the previously mentioned PDF
file or use the Virtual PC guide. Just click on the help menu and
select "Virtual PC Help". If you are in full screen mode press the
command key to see the Mac menu bar.

I have a couple of instances in my data of a surname change. One is the
extra 'l' added to the name Purnel making it Purnell.
On the card for the first ancestor or person to use the double 'l' version
of the name I entered the name as:
First Name: Henry A. (Purnel ->)
Last Name: Purnell
That way Henry sorts with the double 'l' family and in reports it is clear
that there was a name change. The name gets printed out *usually* as
Henry A. (Purnel ->) Purnell
and I know what that means.

In the case of my own surname, which I spell "FENTIMAN", I have found
arounf forty spelling variations so far over the last few hundred years,
often two or three in the same document. There are also spelling variants
for other names in my database, e.g. SHUTT/SHOOTT/SHOUTE. I have developed
the following rules of thumb to deal with these:
1. Always enter the spelling in the Last Name field as found in the most
authoritative sourcefor this individual. This will overide any sources for
different spellings used by parents or children.
2. Record alternative spellings in the Suffix Title field, in brackets and
seperated by slashes. This places the alternatives visibly in most reports,
though unfortunately not yet where they can be sorted in the Index view
(c'mon Leister Productions, we must have multi-field index sorts SOON!)
3. Also record in the Detail field for each source, the spelling(s) used.
Where the spelling variation seems to have occurred as a one-off error in
recording or transcription (e.g. FENTMAN in the 1881 census CDROMs), I
record a note in the source detail regarding that too.
In the few cases where an individual seems to have deliberately changed the
name by which he wished to be known, e.g. Albert FENTIMAN (1868-1921), who
somewhere around 1904 changed his name to FENTON, I have included a note,
e.g. "(later FENTON)" in the last name field.
This is not a perfect scheme, since it does not always throw up a name you
are trying to match due to the limitations of Reunion's index sort, but it
serves me reasonably well as long as my memory holds out to back it up.
P.S. the variants are at the moment: Bentaman, Benteman, Bentiman,
Bentman,
Bentteman, Bentyman, Fantaman, Fanterman, Fensam,
Fensom, Fentaman, Fentamen, Fenteman, Fenterman, Fentiman, Fentimann,

Ventaman, Ventamin, Venteman, Venterman, Ventieman, Venttiman, Ventiman,
Ventimen, Ventimon, Ventman, Ventomine, Ventum, Ventyman, Vinteman,

Diane;
Congrats on your new iMac. I would encourage you to export the data from
FTM and import it into Reunion. This is a wonderful feature that you
really should acquaint yourself with because in order to share files with
ANY other user on ANY other program, GEDCOM is the standard. Sooner or
later, you're gonna have to import and export, so you may as well start now.
I suggest that you print a family history report in FTM on one branch, then
import the GEDCOM into Reunion and run a family history report on the same
branch in Reunion and compare data. I think you'll find that you don't
need to do all that manual imputting, unless you have WAY too much time and
want to do this.
Relax and let Reunion do what it was designed to do.
All the best in your research,

What do you do when you have multiple sources for the same person with name
variations?
When I record a source, I put the information obtained from that source in
the detail field. This works well especially in situations when I have
multiple sources with differing information, for the person's name or
date/place fields (where you can't identify separate sources) However, a
HUGE drawback is this information displays on web cards for people with
"private" flags if you've selected to include sources. Imagine my surprise
when I checked my web cards and say that while the individual showed up as
"Living" on the family card, all you had to do was click on the source
number and there I was revealing names, birth dates, copies of emails
providing the information - in short, everything in my detail fields.
Because of this I had to exclude sources on my web site.
On my wish list there would be:
Have more columns available in the index.
Allow secondary sorts to take place on other fields in the index.
Allow separate sources for date and place fields.
Allow the option to exclude sources for "private" individuals.
And while I'm asking, allow the option to exclude details on all sources.
But as always I still think it is the best software product on the market
with the nicest and most helpful users.
Thanks to all,

I can't guarantee that your Gedcom files will transfer correctly but
I'm almost 100 percent sure that they will. I moved last year from
Personal Ancestral File (PAF) to Reunion. I did a Gedcom export out
of PAF and the whole thing, over 900 records, loaded beautifully into
Reunion.
You can certainly try it - it's much easier than it sounds - and, if
it doesn't work, delete the data and start over. It is so much
simpler and more accurate than re-entering your data.
Others may have cautionary tales but I don't think you have anything
to lose by trying it.

Diane,
I believe you are indeed being too cautious. GEDCOM is a neutral format for
tranferring genealogical data from one program to another. It is the nature of
such a beast that:
(1) it is not perfect; and
(2) that the amount of lost or garbled data depends a lot on the user.
GEDCOM, used properly, should get all your information across. If you have any
unusual or special fields in Family Tree Maker (I have not used FTM; so I don't
know if this is even possible.), you will have to have set up special codes
before exporting your data. I am sure someone else on the list more
knowledgeable on FTM will respond to your question with details of how to do
this.
In any case, it seems to me that you are better off using GEDCOM and comparing
the results to your old data than retyping - UNLESS of course you have very few
people in your file.

If Word is what you settle on, I understand that MS has an new package offer

less than the whole Office2001 package. If you have any connections, perhaps

Diane,
Many of us who have been using Mac and Reunion a long time are also nervous
about adding gedocms, especially if they're large. I take an extra step. I start
a new file. When the screen comes up , I select add gedcom. Most of the time I
add a genral source with the soure bing the person who sent me the gedcom file.
I also mark all the people in the new file. After the new file has finished
opening, I open my regular file. I put the 2 indexes side-by-side to compare.
Starting at the top of the list in the new file, I compare people. If I have
someone in both files, I compare the entries. I delete the person in the new
file, once I've added any new material to my regualr file. I continue in this
manner, unmarking people in the new file as I go. This way, I can stop what I'm
doing and come back and pick up the next marked person. Once I've made sure
there are sources everywhere I want them, no duplicates, etc. I import the new
file into my regular file.
Now, you have to connect the 2. Usually you know the name of the person who you
want to connect to. Just go to that person and add existing mother or father or
whoever. That should make most of the new people connect. However, I'm not too
trusting, so I finish by going to Find and then Presets and looking for unlinked
people.
Hope that lengthy description helps. We all have different ways of doing this,
and I'll be interested to read others suggestions.

Thanks for all the suggestions regarding how to handle changes in surname
spelling over the years. Reunion users seem to have a variety of methods of
dealing with this situation.
The answer to my question as to whether there was a genealogical standard
was provided by Tommy Buch, who wrote:

Consequently, I would then record earlier surnames [ancestors] with the
original (or most common) spelling and subsequent names [descendants] (after
the ancestor who changed it) with the changed (or new spelling).

The problem then is in determining what constitutes an "authoritative
source" when searching old records. Taking into account various mistakes in
recording, illegible handwriting, limited education or "guesstimates" of the
spelling by the person doing the recording, it often becomes a subjective
decision as to which source is authoritative. In which case, using the most
common spelling in the main surname entry field may be the best -- but with
a liberal use of alternate fields (such as AKA and detail) combined with
cross-referencing and meticulous recording of sources so that others can
make sense of the data.

Hi folks,
I know Reunion has many capabilities that are not immediately apparent, but
I keep looking in vain for the following:
If I want a report that lists only the first and last names of a particular
family -- all the Smiths in my database for example -- must I do this by
exporting to database management software, rather than within Reunion? If
so, ok.
Next, in like manner, must I export my entire Reunion file, then use the
database manager to find just the Smiths. The only way I see to do this in
Reunion is to manually mark all the Smiths in the index.
If these capabilities are not in Reunion, then the enhancement I'm looking
for in the next upgrade is for it to have more "Find" options (find and list
the Smiths), and consequently, more custom report options.
Thanks.

You might want to check out the August 2001 issue of Macworld magazine.
In that issue they began a column entitled, "Print Publishing Secrets".
It doesn't recommend software, but it gives some good hints on what to
do with the document before you take it to the printer. Hints like; use
Postscript fonts instead of True Type fonts, and use TIFF format for
pictures. I don't know anything about the latest version of Word but I
have an old version (5.1) that turns TIFF pictures into PICT files when
I import them from Photoshop. Before buying Word, I'd check that out.

Thus if you have the old version of Mac Family Tree Maker you can read most of

Another option is to export a text file that contains just the first

I believe that Larry has the correct answer. I have been using FTM 3.02
for about 5 years or so and their catalogs have been very specific that
the newer CD's with a few exceptions can be used only with FTM for PC's.
This is a major reason that I have been considering switching to a Mac
specific program along with the fact that version 3.02 is hopelessly
outdated even though it runs fine on OS 9.1. I have also found that a
high percentage of the files on their CD's are poorly sourced and to a
large extent just copies of data collected elsewhere, about the same
quality as most of the web sites.

Diane,
I do a lot of gedcom imports especially from Family Tree Maker exported
data. Two things may happen, the data won't totally map from FTM to Reunion,
in which case Reunion will add new fields in the events, facts, and notes
fields for individuals and events and notes fields for couples. This isn't
bad,
since all the data will be saved and it will be up to you to move these
fields.
The second and totally bad situation that I've encountered is Reunion won't
read the gedcom or crashes. If the gescom is in text format and Reunion still
doesn't read it or crashes, then I would contact the nice people at LeisterPro
and send them a copy of the gedcom. They have made a new family file
for me when I had this happen.

I've thought of doing this a few times, but not got around to it yet (so
this approach may not work!):
My plan was to use Reunion's Flags feature - i.e. Create a flag for "Got
Birth Certificate". These flags could then be printed on reports and
graphs.
This way everything is kept within Reunion, and information won't become
out of date.
One of the reasons I haven't implemented this yet is the number of
sources available - for some people I might check birth certificates, for
others, family records, censuses, railway records...

There's no way to assign a general source to everyone in the family
file in version 5 or 6. (This is a new feature we added in Reunion
7.) To add a general source to the entire family file, you'll have to
export a Gedcom file and then import it back into a new Reunion
family file or your main family file. Use the Automatic Source pop-up
menu in the Import Gedcom window to assign a general source to
everyone you are importing.
For more information, choose Help -> Search for Help, and search for

I haven't bothered to take the time to figure out why some of these files
crash (I'm a Mac and PC user), so instead, whenever I download a GEDCOM, I
automatically drag it onto the MacLink Plus alias on my desktop and click
the "FIX" button. In a second or two, I now have a usable GEDCOM file.
MacLink Plus may be something you already have, but if not, you can
purchase it from nearly every online software vendor ... approximately $90,
but you can often find a rebate offer for half the purchase price.
Good luck in your research.

Iıve been folowing the list for some time and have questions concerning the
use of pc and FTM (with the Archive Viewer) cdıs:
1. Has anyone subscribed to ftm.genealogy.comıs on-line access to their
cdıs? For what works out to less than about a $150/yr (US) they claim to
provide the ability to search all 300+ FTM cdıs. This sounds like alot of
money but itıs cheaper than purchasing a used PC (oh, the thought!) and, at
$150, is worth close to 7 yrs access when compared to the price for a new
mac.
2. Has anyone purchased cdıs from Genealogical Publishing Co. ? Theyıll
provide the FTM Archive Viewer, v 3.02, for free (but you have to request
it at the time of purchase - it has itıs own item number). They probably
donıt have as extensive of a collection as FTM (Iım guessing) but they at
least provide the Viewer.
3. If you purchase a cd from GPC, get the free FTM Viewer, can you then
view the newer FTM cdıs?
These ?ıs obviously donıt answer Ancestryıs refusal to provide
cross-platform cdıs nor the issue of using VirtualPC on a mac. Iıve
invested too much in SCSIıs (scanner, ext.hard drive, monitors, etc) an
accelerator card, and RAM over the yrs to justify a new USB machine and all
the changes that would cause.
The on-line access, if itıs as the company claims, would seem to provide
the ability to search for the data (read as indexes, a secondary source
regardless of whether I have the actual cd or have access to it) and then
go to/get a copy of the original record (primary source).
For the book that Iım writing I use Reunion 7 (just upgraded from 6), Word
and Excel 98, Photoshop 5 (b&wıs only: they have a much smaller file size,
itıs easier to adjust brightness & contrast and itıll be cheaper to
self-publish). Excel is great for setting up spreadsheets to mimic city

I'm curious...what exactly is it that's supposedly crashing Reunion
about a particular GEDCOM file? The bottom line is that GEDCOM files
are nothing but pure text. The character set (Macintosh, MS-DOS,
ANSEL, etc.) may or may not support characters with special
characteristics. But it's otherwise a text file. What could MacLink
Plus possibly do to fix anything in a GEDCOM file that wouldn't also
be fixed by simply opening the file in BBEdit Lite (free) and doing a
"save as" on it?
Just curious -- in case I can learn something new.

Yes, you can do this search with Reunion but it involves a few steps.
First, choose Find -> Anything and click the People tab. Search for "Misc.
Notes, Contains, france". Click Find.
This will produce a Found List window of all people with "France" in the
Misc. Notes. Select Unmark Everybody in Family File from the Mark pop-up
menu and then select Mark Everybody in List. At this point, everyone who
has a note field containing "France" will be marked.
Close this window.
Once again, choose Find -> Anything and click the People tab. This time
search for "# of Marked Parents, Equal, 0." Click Find. The list that
appears will be everyone who does not have a parent with "France" in the
notes.

While I haven't encountered this crashing yet myself (always
allow for extra RAM during a GEDCOM import - this has been
discussed here before), it is possible that these problem
files could be due to imbedded invisible control characters,
esp. the lower ASCII (less than 32) variety (<CR>-carriage
return and <HT>-tab should be acceptable though).
You justly recommend the excellent program BBEdit Lite (a
new free version just became available recently, see
download.com or barebones.com). While you're at it you
should also run the "Remove Gremlins" feature in BBEdit Lite
that will take care of these invisible characters.

I'm an engineer who used to work with software for many years. I've found
files that crash MacLink yet that can be opened with Word Perfect. The
probable answer is that the import software can not handle some illegal
character or mis interprets said character or even a sequence of characters.
Other software may ignore said characters. The best method is to try several
potential solutions and use the one that works, just like you do for the rest
of life's problems. Remember that what works for one child may not work for
the next.
Now, my question--Sherlock has an option for finding files under
CUSTOM-ADVANCED OPTIONS for File Type and Creator if you type in the right
extension.
What are these entries for Reunion and for Superchart files?

Tom,
Thanks for your suggestion and reply to my Index List question.
Your idea made me look at the Flags section in the manual "Examples for Flags".
It has suggestions for all sorts of different flags, i.e., civil war
vets, more research needed, look for obituary, etc.
My question now ... how do you pull a report that lists only flags?
Tricia can you help on this? I tried checking None in the pop-up menu
and created the index report as you suggested. This worked well.
Your other suggestion was to export a text file. I see that I can
include flags. Would this give me what I want so that I could make a
spreadsheet or list by each person's name with each flag listed? This
is a function I have not used. (I'm still fairly new to Reunion.)
Also, can I further mark a location, like show all Iowa relatives and
just list them with their flags?
Thanks for to all.

The 4 digit codes for Reunion version 7 files are:
Type: R~D7
Creator: R~U7
Notice that the second character in each case is a tilde. If you e-mail to me a
sample file of Superchart, I will identify those codes for you. Alternatively,
you can download and install Snitch at http://www.niftyneato.com/ and it will

Steve,
This started with my attempt to read a FTM gedcom in a new family file.
Reunion crashed twice before I contacted LeisterPro (email) and sent them
the URL of where to pickup the gedcom. They were nice enough to get a
copy, make a new database and then send me the resultant family file (email).
The crashes occurred because of very long text lines within source citiations
and details. I run into some different methods of storing data in a person's
genealogical work - some of which cause Reunion problems. Most of the time,
its due to very long text lines.
The problem with gedcoms in general, is that they don't always appear as
a text file when downloaded. Thus, I always open them in BBEDIT (came with
my iMac) and save as text, replacing the original file.
When I run into problems importing a newly downloaded gedcom file, I can
run it through GEDitCOM or Sparrowhawk to see the data. Sometimes,
neither program works and I can't see the data, other than through BBEDIT
in raw GED language. If you haven't been in a gedcom, then try it to see
how difficult it is to read it raw.
Cousin John
Aka Johnn T Hammond
PS: I've picked up at least a 1000 gedcoms from ancestry.com alone, in
my efforts to support seven different family genealogies.

You could export a text file that contains the person's name and
flags and then import the text file into a spreadsheet.

Yes. Choose Find -> Anything and search for "Any Field, Contains,
Iowa." You'll get a list of people who have the word Iowa entered
somewhere in their data. Select Unmark Everybody in the Family File
from the Mark pop-up menu and then select Mark Everybody in List. You
may then export a text file for just the marked people.

Create Flags for the various wars. To do this, choose Options ->
Define -> Person Fields -> Flags. Click the Add Flag button to create
a new flag. Then, open the Edit Person window for the person who
fought in one of these wars and check the appropriate flag.
If you'd like the flags to appear on the family card, choose Options

For more information, click the Manual button and search for "flag."

Go into Sherlock's Advanced Options window then switch back to the
Finder. Drag a Reunion/Superchart file onto Sherlock's window - Sherlock
will populate the fields for you.
(That's in the Sherlock with OS 9. I think with previous versions you
had to drag the file right onto the type/creator fields).

There are two ways that I have done this:
1) Add it as an attachment to your email. You might have to save it in your
word processor as a text document first for the other person to be able to
open it.
2) Do a simple copy and paste into your email message.

I know some of you can authoritatively answer this question: When a
software publisher no longer sells, no longer supports, and apparently no
longer has a financial interest in a software package, does that software
package enter the public domain and essentially become "freeware?" How are
the legitimate software warehouses and download sites on the web handling
this? WordPerfect for Mac is or may soon become a good case in point.

AppleWorks 6.2 is for OS X and will not work directly with Reunion, however
the latest classic version of AppleWorks is 6.1.2 and that version has some
new problems with RTF conversion.
AppleWorks 6.0.3 & 6.0.4 returned the RTF support that was gone in the
initial release of version 6.0 and worked fine.
Until Apple fixes the problems with the latest version of AppleWorks we
recommend staying with version 6.0.3, 6.0.4 or even version 5.

Hi all,
Actually, AppleWorks 6.2 is a Carbon application and will work with Macs
running OS X and any Mac running system 9 with the Carbon update. All Macs
running system 9.1 have the Carbon extension and there is no problem running
AppleWorks 6.2
In AppleWorks 6.0.4 you can open and save in RTF format. With that you can
also open and save in RTF format with versions 6.2.
If anyone has any questions on the Mac please feel free to ask. That is what
I do everyday...work with Macs in a large school district.
Thanks for all the great work on Reunion. Bravo!!!

If you are attempting to send your family group sheet to an individual,
not to a list that won't accept attachments, you might take a screen
picture of the sheet, convert to jpeg in photodelux (or similar) and
send that. I have done this a few times with pedigree charts generated

What I think you want is a copy of PrintToPDF on your Mac. I believe it's
freeware. The way it works is that (after you install it) you go to Chooser
and choose PrintToPDF as your printer. When you use Reunion to generate a
Family Group Sheet and tell it to print, a file with a .PDF extension will
appear on your desktop. That file can be opened by anyone who has Acrobat
Reader (another freebie download from the Adobe web site). Send the .PDF
file as an attachment to your e-mail. If the recipient has downloaded
Acrobat Reader, he/she can view and print the form just as it appeared on
your screen.

I don't think you can do so directly from within Reunion, since Reunion
doesn't really provide a way of viewing whole family group sheets directly,
but you can create a family group sheet as plain text, open it in your
favorite text editor, then copy it from there. By making it plain text,
you avoid losing formatting in your email program- the information's either
there or it ain't.

First, let me qualify by saying I am not an attorney or otherwise
legally qualified to offer opinions on matters of law...
Having said that, I feel I can reasonably well be certain in my
response -- which is that such software is NOT in the public domain.
Despite a company's failure, or simple lack of interest, the software
is still protected by copyright laws. The best way to ensure that
such software is legally usable after its publisher stops supporting
it is to press someone to identify the copyright holder and to have
them publicly state that they grant free use of the software without
payments.
Copyright is a tricky issue. As a software developer, I've had some
passing familiarity with it. I have written software on which I
claim copyright, but I give it away (case in point, my FolderUpdater
utility written for my fellow Reunion users). That does NOT mean
it's public domain -- the term "freeware" certainly applies because I
set its price at "free". It does mean I own all rights to the
software and you can't hack out the source code without violating my
rights. But it also means I have publicly stated that it's free for
any and all to use.
Hope this is helpful.
