Would like to know how to deal with BC dates in Renion 6. It seems
that some people give up because Reunion cannot understand BC, so have
to put dates in the "place" entry.

Subject: How about Reunion for the Palm Pilot?

I'm wondering if the reunion folks have ever given though to producing an
application for the 3com Pilot organizers which would interface with Reunion?
It would be awsome to be able to take a Palm organizer to a library or a
cemetary and have access to your whole family file, be able to edit or enter
new names and notes on location!

I have been thinking about getting a used powerbook for such a purpose... but
a hand held pocket item like the 3com Palm organizer sounds even better.

Just a thought

Subject: Intermittant Crashes

I've been up to my eyeballs in my family file and my website redesign and
have just gotten back to reading the Digest. I see many people are have
problems with crashes and thought I would put my 2 cents in.

I'm running a 7500 PowerMac with a Newer Tech 300MHrz G3 upgrade, 144MB
RAM, and system 8.5.1 - and on a IIci with a Sonnet 040 accelerator card
under 7.6 with 32 MB of RAM. No crashes I can blame on Reunion in either
machine, except when I don't give it enough memory on the IIci.

The crashes I DO have all seem to revolve around Netscape (Explorer isn't
any better). If its open or has been open, several strange things happen. I
usually restart when I quit out of Netscape because I know it will do it
for me if I don't. It seems to hang on to memory it doesn't need, even
after you Quit out of it and when its open, it seems to suffer from what
appear to be fragmented RAM problems.

Now given the fact that the new online manual HAS to be read with a
browser, which is being opened and closed during an given session in
Reunion... need I say more?

This instability of browser technology is my biggest reason for wishing we
had a print manual - not to mention when the machine is down its pretty
hard to consult the manual.

Subject: more questions

#1 is there an easy way to mark a "family" all at once...? go to "family
card" xyz and then mark husband and wife and all 16 children all at once...

#2 in merging some of these datasets...I end up with person "A" who has
two sets of parents... I want to mark his ancestors to merge them... If I
select his ancestors.. and then edit his parent card to parent set "B" and
mark his second set of ancestors.... and then make sure that I find all
marked people with spouses who are unmarked (and mark them too).... How do
I get all of the siblings marked.....

#3 Some of my data sets mark women of "nobility" with a "first name" of
"Lady" as in firstname of Lady Elenor, or Lady Jane... as opposed to using
the "prefix" field for such designations... I have hand corrected some of
the entries.. very tedious, and after the Ladies, I have "Sirs" and
"Counts" etc.... is there a quick Search and Replace that will do this?

I am afraid to use the "Global" replace for fear that people who are
already corrected and have the proper "prefix" and/or "Suffix" will get
their designations screwed up.....

and also... some people entered data for surnames/first names as
follows... "Elenor De" as the first name and "Chaworth" as thelast name as
opposed to "Elenor" as the First name and "De Chaworth" as the last... I'd
like to standardize my files at least.... so the same "logic" for search
and replace should apply....

something like find all people with firstnames starting with "Lady " mark
them... replace all occurances of "Lady " in marked records with "" (a
blank datafield).... but what if (wild chance but could happen) they lived
in a place called "Lady Land" or already had a Suffix of "Lady of Spain" or
something like that.... would that get stripped out too?

For the Leister Folks....

How often do you recommend rebuilding the index of the datafile...???

is there an easy way to check for Looping? one of the datasets I brought
in had a grandfather linked as a greatgrandson or something like that...
Superchart totally blew chunks when trying to graph things.... took me
three days to find it.....

You can choose Options -> Child Status and change Stepchild of Father to
Stepchild. Everyone assigned the Stepchild of Father status will now be
changed to Stepchild.

Then use Find Anything to find all the parents who have children that are
assigned the Stepchild of Mother status. Choose Find -> Anything, click the
Couples tab, and search for "# of Stepchild of Mothers, more than, 0."

Mark everyone in the Found List window and use your left and right arrow
keys to flip through the marked people.

To quickly change the child status, press the Command key and click the
appropriate child button. You can choose the Stepchild status from the
pop-up menu.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I sometimes experienced random
crashes with my G3/266 Mac running OS8.5. The crashes might be Type 1, 2,
or 25, and sometimes just out-right lockups. The applications that
crashed were random also - Word 5.1, Reunion 6.02, Photoshop, FrameMaker.

I finally figured out that the culprit was MechWarrior! My son sometimes
uses my main computer to play MechWarrior because it won't run on my old
IICi that I gave him when I bought the G3.

As best I can figure, MechWarrior must leave some trash in memory when
you exit the program that somehow or other causes a problem later on. If
I am careful to reboot the computer after he runs MechWarrior, I don't
have any of these problems. He now has strict instructions to reboot the
computer after he quits his program so I don't have to go ask him if he
used it that day.

Just a thought, but if you or anyone else are running games on your
computer, I would recommend a reboot afterward before running Reunion or
any other serious application. Game programs are notorious for not
following established programming conventions.

However, exporting to FileMaker Pro does the trick. Subsorting works,

Is there something that one might tend to do accidentally that can set the home card to the current card?

The only way that I know of to set the home card is to go through Options > Startup.. > [Use Current Family] [Save], which needless to say is not something one would do without noticing.

Yet every now and then I find that my home card has gone from being my regular home card to some other family that I've been editing recently. So I figure there must be some "shortcut" that I've been hitting accidentally. If I knew what it was, maybe I could be more careful to avoid it.

Happy Anniversary guys. You do good work.

A reminder that there are tech answers to questions about scanners,
resolution, and PhotoCD on my website.

Is there a way to control the type styles of dates in exported web pages
separately from the individual's names? Bold dates after the names are
ugly and they cause the lines to break unevenly. I would really like to
have them always behave as a subhead.

Put me on the list to second the ability to use my Palm III to make notes
on family stuff and someday sync it to Reunion. Right now I'm trying to
get it to interface with MSOffice running in Win95 in RealPC. 3Com says
they don't support RealPC. Any of you have suggestions?

From: Frank Leister
Subject: Two milestones for Leister Productions

Greetings,

This week marked a couple of milestones for us.

First, it was 15 years ago this week that Leister Productions was born.

The beginning, in 1984, was very humble. Just a one-man operation,
scratching out a living in the music business. A few years later, personal
computers entered the world of music. In 1988, I bought a Mac Plus and
discovered a knack for software design. I saw my future.

Reunion was born in the summer of 1988 as a project to learn programming,
and to please my mother-in-law. It went on sale in the fall, through a
little classified ad in the back of MacWorld magazine. It "took off" around
1991, with a good review in MacUser magazine.

The other milestone for us this week is the release of another product, the
IconaRanger.

Unlike Reunion, the IconaRanger is a utility that will only be useful to
those who create CDs. (Whereas, I always felt, and still do, that Reunion
can be used by anybody with a family, and a Mac.)

We developed the IconaRanger soon after the release of Reunion 6, because
we wanted a nice image to appear automatically when the Reunion 6 CD was
inserted. We found one shareware product, but it didn't support system 8 or
newer, and it injected obnoxious copyright strings everywhere.

So we made our own.

Does this mean that we're embarking on a new line of utilities? No.

Does this mean we're planning to release other products? No.

Does this mean that we're moving focus away from Reunion? No. In fact, the
next major upgrade of Reunion is progressing beautifully.

All it means is that we put some time and effort into producing a nifty,
simple tool (that, to our knowledge, is very unique) and we thought, since
we expended the development time, why not sell it?

The URL to the IconaRanger web page is...

http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/ranger/index.html

Once again, if you don't create CDs, you'll probably have no interest.

But if you burn CDs (for example, family history CDs) or if you work for a
business that distributes CDs, you should check out the free demo version.

BTW, it's a Mac only product :-)

Subject: Web Sites & Manuals

This may be of interest to some on the list that are doing web sites. It
should also be of interest to those discussing printed manuals and Help
systems.

Let me state emphatically, upfront, that I have no connection what so ever
with Macromedia. I do not even own any stock. I am just a new and, so far,
very happy user of a program called Dreamweaver 2 which is the best thing
I have yet seen for designing web pages. Especially for a very small
business such as mine.

You can DL a trial copy of Dreamweaver 2 from http://www.macromedia.com.
Fully functional, expires in 30 days.

Its A Big DL.:-)

The Help file which comes with Dreamweaver 2 is a tour d'force in what an
online help system can be. A great illustration, IMHO, of how online help
can contribute to user satisfaction in ways that go far beyond printed
manuals. Yes, I do like printed manuals - but here is something more.

Warning: Do not look at it without a 4.x browser equipped with Shockwave.
Things will probably work OK, but you won't really get the whole message.

A good place to start exploring Help is the Tutorial but you will find the
technology all through the system. Used anywhere it can make a
contribution.

Finally, note that Macromedia provides a method of printing the entire
Help system from their web site. Admittedly you will spill a lot of ink
doing this. Still, it is a workable compromise between printed manuals
everyone is required to pay for and strictly online help.

Just a footnote to my crash reports: I have not had Netscape open, and
I deleted the manual from my hard drive in order to have more space
for Reunion on my little laptop Duo 210. I carry the Reunion 5 paper

Subject: Crashes with Netscape

Here's a trick to help alleviate the problems with Netscape-related
crashes: Go to Control Panel/Memory and turn on the RAM disk and set the
size at probably a minimum of 1200 or so. Then in Netscape Composer, go
to Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Cache and 'choose' the RAM disk as the cache
folder. You'll need to restart before this goes into effect, but once in
effect you will permanently have a RAM disk image on the desktop and
Netscape will keep it's cache there and not on your hard disk. I've found
that this eliminates a lot of the "Type-whatever" crashes while using
Netscape.

BTW, I can't take credit for this - I saw it in MacUser magazine.

I was having intermittant crashes and freezes which I blamed on Netscape

(http://www.macfixit.com/). I applied the patch supplied with the

MacOS 8.5 and 8.5.1 only and is due to be fixed in the 8.6 update.

The site containing the patch is at:
http://aardvark.magnet.at/software/patches.html#membug

The description of the problem (from the same site):

This patch corrects a problem with Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1 first reported
by Steve Jasik. Steve writes: "The manifestation of the bug is random
tromping of memory and sometimes it corrupts the heap (this happens when
an Application is launched). The problem is that some programmer did a
Load Contents when he meant to do a Load Address."

People in the UK can find the patch on the CD on the May edition of

When Reunion creates a report, it saves the report to disk as an RTF (Rich
Text Format) file and attempts to open this file into the selected word
processor. Unfortunately, Nisus cannot automatically open any RTF file.

The only way Nisus will open a report correctly is if you save the report
to your hard disk (select RTF File as the Destination) and then import it.

Nisus has acknowledged the problem and said they would fix it, but to our
knowledge, the problem was not been fixed.

My recommendation to Dian, which I think she liked, was to delete these
extraneous notes from the gedcom before importing it.

FWIW, my procedure for handling new gedcoms is:
1. Create a new, empty Reunion file and Import the Gedcom
2. Review the new database and check it out for consistency with the way
I like to record things, make notes of changes that are easier and
quicker to do with Word than with Reunion
3. Make a copy of the gedcom, preserving the original in case I mess
something up, open it with Word and edit tags, records, etc.

The tag that I usually have to change in almost every gedcom I receive is
to change "1 CHR" to "1 BAPM" so baptisms will show up as I like to see
them. I also change the "1 NOTE" tags to "1 HIST" so the user's notes
will go into a custom note field and preserve his notes separate from
whatever notes I might want to add later in the "Misc Notes" field.

The Search & Replace feature of Word can be used to delete some
extraneous things if necessary during this step.

4. After the edits are complete, save the file as type TEXT and repeat
steps 1 & 2 (new files each time).
5. If further gedcom massaging is necessary, repeat step 3 then 1 & 2
again, iterate as necessary until the gedcom imports the way I like it.

6. Only after having a nice, clean import that is consistent with my
preferences and master database structures do I start marking records for
importing into a COPY of my master database.

There's no way to keep this note from importing. You'll have to delete it

Very hearty congratulations Frank on a job well done, and for what you are

simpler recording task for many of we addicted people - and, believe me,
combined with family history it is an addiction!!

I was lucky enough to find Reunion some 5 years ago when I finally took the

before that event, and immediately the volume of research results expanded

Like the above I have had no problem crashes with Reunion, but Netscape is
another matter!! I have a G3/266,4G HD,128 RAM and have given Netscape 30
Megs of memory. Communicator (with last few upgrades) is a dead loss and
I have gone back to using Navigator 3.01. This seems to be quite a bit
better for stability. A case of the latest is not always the best!!

On the Netscape site I did find a General Macintosh Troubleshooting page on
their Netcenter pages and these give quite a bit of detailed useful
information on reasons for freezes and crashes with suggestions for
overcoming the problems.

EG. Type 11 crashes in Communicator: "This can be caused by file
corruption, extension conflicts or insufficient system resources. First
of all check that memory is configured correctly ..." - with detailed
directions. There also appear to be Java problems when accessing web
pages which use Java applets..

Netscape also give support for 64K Java support problems, etc.

It is obvious that Netscape is aware of the problems and are trying to fix
them (I hope!!)

I found much of interest, and I suggest folks check out these pages
accessed through the Netscape Home Page. They have also supplied a direct
enquiry section which goes to an automated reply site, where they give
possible answers to specific questions, and if this does not help, they
give a URL to contact a 'real person'. I got assistance on one item from
the automated helper! Full and easily understandable solutions are

When I first started getting frequent crashes with v.6.02, Leister
recommended I increase memory allocated to Reunion. So, I opened the
Reunion 6 Info window and increased the Preferred Size to 3000.
Unfortunately, this did not work. I have tried many things since without
success.

A few days ago, however, I went back to the Reunion 6 Info window and
this time increased the Minimum Size to 3000 (while still keeping the
Preferred Size at 3000). So far I have not had any crashes. This may be
just dumb luck and another crash is just around the corner, but I thought
I'd mention it for others with crashing problems to test.

And perhaps someone could explain to me the function of the Minimum Size
figure. I understand what the Suggested Size and the Preferred Size are
but not the Minimum Size.

You can save your notes as plain text and place them in your shared folder

My wife and I have a PowerBook G3 with 160MB, a Performa 6300 with 64MB, and
a new iMac with 96MB. We have the latest versions of both Netscape 4.5 and
the Macintosh Internet Explorer 4.5. I have occasionally experienced
crashes with Netscape, both with the latest and with previous versions, but
we do not have any crashes with Internet Explorer. In fact, the browsers
cause fewer crashes than other large programs, like Microsoft Word. But, I
have found that all program crashes are caused by inadequate assignments of
memory to a program or by conflict with extensions or control panels for
other programs. In particular, old applications or utilities are most
likely the cause. (MacHome magazine provides a CD-ROM with its monthly
magazine that contains the latest updates to the most widely used programs
and utilities.) Conflict Catcher is a utility that can frequently identify
such conflicts.

Finally, I would like to comment on the demands by many for a paper manual
with each new version of Reunion. As the author or co-author of 10
different manuals for computer programs over a period of 6 years, my
judgment is that publishing a well written and illustrated manual with each
release of Reunion would require additional staff for writing, editing, and
preparation for typesetting. In addition, any publisher charges for
printing a manual. The cost of publishing a good manual is not small;
$20-$30 would not be unreasonable according to my experience.

I realize many people may find the OS 8 memory patches work fine,
however, Apple requested that the patches posted to online sites be
removed. It is my understanding that the problem has been fixed in v8.6.
Patching the OS can be an iffy proposition and why subject yourself to a
problem that will be rectified very shortly.

Approximately one month ago I patched Netscape Communicator 4.5.1 with an
application called NAVCOM Cache Control (sorry, PPC only). This tiny,
inexpensive ($1.00) buckware application permanently changes Netscape to
use a memory cache instead of a disk cache or ram disk. This changes the
default memory cache (1mb) of Netscape to whatever you select. Once you
run NAVCOM and it successfully applies your choices Netscape will use
memory for caching, not your hard drive or ram disk (technically a ram
disk uses memory, but see the point concerning File Manager below.) I am
sure I don't have to tell anyone on this list how much faster your
computer can access data from ram then it can your hard drive. Using the
memory cache also avoids having Netscape use File Manager when accessing
the cached pages and when you quit Netscape the ram is once again
available for use by the OS, or other applications (not true of a ram
disk). (These tidbits were taken from the web site.) Netscape has been
rock solid since I modified it and I generally have 3-5 (random)
applications running all the time. My Performa 6400 (OS 8.5.1, 136 mb
ram) has never been, so stable.

Give NAVCOM a try:

I am a new (March 99) and extremely satisfied user of a Palm IIIx. Hot

Follow these steps:
1. Create relationships for this person.
2. Click the Lists tab in the Relationship List window
3. Check Parents, Aunts and Uncles, and Siblings.
4. Click List.
5. Mark everyone in the Relationship List window.
6. Choose Edit -> Parents and select the other set of parents as the preferred
parents. Repeat steps 1 to 5.
This should mark all ancestors and their siblings.

That is certainly a possiblilty. By doing the Find & Replace on just marked
people, as you suggested, will greatly reduce the chance of this happening.
After the Find & Replace, Reunion will report the number of changes made,
this number should match the number of marked people if no other fields
were changed. Make a backup of you family file before doing this.

There's no need to do this on a regular basis. The only time we recommend

There's no easy way to check for looping. You'd have to look through the

as an adjunct to Reunion).

I thought the Palm Pilot was a neat tool, and perfect for certain
applications - mainly flat-file uses with simple data, such as PIM
information, memos, etc.

And it fit in my shirt pocket!

But as a companion to Reunion, it had important limitations, such as screen
size, RAM, keyboard, etc. In general, family tree information has much more
breadth and depth than the type of records for which the pilot was
designed, IMHO.

It also struck me (at least this was true in January 1998) that users would

There has been some discussion on this topic recently, and I must admit I
have had my share of troubles with the latest Reunion (except I don't even
receive an error code dialog - it just freezes, leaving the cursor moveable
until I press option-command-escape to do a force-quit, after which
everything stops!).
Here are two free software utilities that may provide some relief from
freezes and crashes - not just from Reunion, but other applications as
well. However, to say that there are any guarantees would be unrealistic.

*****
1. Netscape Defrost

"This system extension keeps Netscape from freezing while accessing Web
pages. Many people have reported freezes which require the Cmd-Opt-Esc key
combination to force quit Netscape. This extension fixes a very specific
type of freeze caused when Netscape (or another program) reads the
MachineLocation from external parameter RAM." (I have not used this yet,
but it was created for earlier Netscape versions, and is reported to work
with Mac OS 8. I don't know if it is needed for newer Netscape
versions. I use the older NS v. 3.0 because it provides Java with my use
of OS 7.5.5)

*****
2. Mac OS Purge

"This purges the system software memory. For a variety of reasons, the
system software memory allocation can hang on to memory that it no longer
needs, preventing that memory from being available to launch
applications. This utility gives the memory its freedom again." (I keep
this on my desktop and double click it everytime I close an application
that has appeared to give trouble.)

Relations is a genealogy program for Newton devices. Enter and display
families with all the relationships shown, or enter unrelated individuals as
information is gathered. You can use a Newton device to gather family
history information to be loaded, in GEDCOM format, into a desktop genealogy
program. Relations can be used by itself, but there is limited reporting

I appreciate your comments about the newest Palm III. It appears that 3COM

I'd be curious to hear exactly how you'd use a Palm Pilot with Reunion.
Obviously, the Palm device lacks the resources to store and display your

necessarily be limited to adjunct functionality.

Clever. I think this an important distinction in light of Frank's
comments re Reunion on the Palm.
The idea of using the Palm as a data gathering tool and being able to
upload directly into Reunion would be a super addition. I would certainly
posit that it would be worthwile reconsider development from the
direction of Palm to Mac as opposed to Mac to Palm. This really doesn't
stress the memory or screen size restrictions of the Palm that Frank
aluded to and which are entirely valid in many cases. It may not be the
preferential multiuser or presentation tool, but it is a super data
gathering tool.

I've been using my Palm for a couple of years now and most recently the
Palm III.
Now I will admit that it sync's with more stability with my PC rather
than any of my Mac's. I really wish it would do better, but that's
another discussion.

The interface is impressive, from what I understand from my techie

As for Reunion uses... I see it more like a Reunion Lite... perhaps
capable of carrying a small-to-medium (0-5,000) family file and access

Certainly the ability to use infra-red to directly import data from FHC

When you specify a minimum size for any application, there has to be that
much free RAM available in the "Largest Unused Block" for the application to
start up, even if the largest unused block is less than the Preferred size.

At the time of launch of an application....

1. if the Largest Unused Block is more than Preferred Size, the programme
will launch into a chunk of RAM equal to the Preferred size.

2. if the Largest Unused Block is less than Preferred size, but more than
Minimum Size, then the programme will launch into a chunk of RAM equal to the
Largest Unused Block.

3. if the Largest Unused Block is less than the Minimum size, the programme
won't launch, and the Finder will give an error message that there's not
enough RAM available.

Situation 2 above is the dangerous one - as I pointed out in an earlier post
on this same subject, if the Largest Unused Block after a programme launches
is zero, or very close to it, this leaves the whole computer in a potentially
dangerous situation, as there is no room for the System Heap to expand should
it need to for whatever reason, and if a programme causes it to want to
expand, a Crash can often be the result.

I agree with the others who suggest a gedcom recording type of program.
The benefit of making it somewhat generic is that it could work for anyone

There has been much talk recently about v.6 crashing or freezing, often
with a net-browser implicated. In this context, I would like to call your
attention to a hopeful development on the horizon.

A small group of programmers in Germany is writing a Mac-specific browser
that has great promise. Check it out at http://www.iCab.de ; you can
download a preview copy (latest version is 1.5 that will expire in
August). It is not yet bullet-proof, but they are on the right track.

It is a "users" browser, i.e. does not have the built-in biases that come
with the content-providers' two (Netscape/AOL & Microsoft). Preferred
memory size is a modest 1.4Meg! And a feature I especially like is the
ability to purge at the end of a session all the cookies that are forced
upon you by many sites.

The only flaw that I have found, so far, is that I can not get it to

would be more convenient if I could find a way of accessing all the
members of a pedigree by typing one name (person). The solution of
copy-paste could be a great delay for me.

Ordinarily I would agree. However, when a Windows program has a specific
capability to directly import files that were generated by a Mac application
(or vice versa), the program doing the importing should have the ability to
handle the character mapping differences. For the program designers to not
anticipate this requirement is in my opinion a BUG! It should not be
necessary to run some third party program to overcome this design flaw.

The Reunion 6 electronic manual has something much better than the type of
index you'd find in a paper manual. It has the ability to search the entire
documentation simply by entering a few keywords.

For example, to learn about the family log, choose Help -> Search for Help,
and search for "family log." The first link on the Results page will take
you to a page that helps you interpret the log.

Generations 5.2 can IMPORT a Reunion 6 file with no troubles as far as I can
determine...

Note the word is IMPORT not open.

On the Mac make a copy of your Family File and name it to something like
"namefile.uds" - the .uds is the important part. Then copy/eMail/transfer
somehow that file to the PC with Generations on it.

Then on the PC use Generations 5.2 to create a new empty Family File, then
click on File ------> Import/Export ------> Reunion 5 file.

Select the "namefile.uds" file you moved there, and Generations should import
this cleanly. This works on my 8500/300G3 with a 586/100 PC Compatibility
card in it.

>I agree that character mapping would be a problem.

I've no comment on this as I haven't tried to compare upper ASCII characters
from one file to another.

This is one way you could handle a pen name. I've used Mark Twain as an
example.

In the Edit Person window of your relative, enter his/her legal name with
the pen name in quotes:
First Name: Samuel Langhorne "Mark TWAIN"
Last Name: CLEMENS

Then select Edit -> Add Unrelated Person -> Male/Female. In the Edit
Person window of this new, unlinked person enter the following:
First Name: Mark
Last Name: TWAIN (see Samuel Langhorne CLEMENS)

The reason for creating two cards is so that the person will appear in
the Index, and the Index of your web cards, twice - once under the legal
name and once under the pen name. If someone searches for the relative
under the pen name, they will see the reference to the relative's legal
name and can then look there.

Enter all your relative's information - ie notes, facts, events - only on
the card with the legal name. The pen name card is only there as a
pointer to the legal name.

Is it a bug that the parts from your cars diesel engine won't work in my
cars gasoline engine?

Same thing here. Unless things have changed radically, most PC programs
simply don't recognize high ASCII characters. They only use the first 127
of the 256 possible ASCII characters while the Mac uses, or can use, the
entire set. It takes some very special coding by the programmers in the
PC world to do what the Macintosh does automagically, simply, every day.
En and em dashes, greek characters and super/sub combitiories simply
don't exist in the PC world unless especially coded for by the
programmers. Give the guys on the Windows side a break, they're really
doing their best to catch up... ;-) STEVE

I have been following this chat group for a while. I have an
interesting problem to see what the group can do with. I have entered
my census sources as single state, county, and year combinations. What
I have done is to find a family in Georgia, Wayne county 1870 and mapped
all my people to this Census Source. The source has a numerical number
of 45. Later on I find more of my family with the same state, county
but the year of 1860. After creating this source, I find the source
number is 56. When I actaully find the same family from 1870 on the
1860 Cenuss source, my source numbers are in reverse order. Also my
sources are starting to creep up in number and I would like to sort them
in Year, State, County order. This would make it easier to find when I
am looking at another family.

I guess my problem is I would like to have the capability to sort and
renumber my sources and keep my connection to all the correct people.

Not to belabor things, but I just wanted to make two points:
1) IMHO, if a program is going to have an "import" feature that supports
cross-platform files, then that program should provide proper character
filtering.
2) I wanted to let other users know that if they are using umlauts, etc.
in their Reunion databases, there will be a problem if the file is
imported directly into Generations and that for the time being anyway,
only a gedcom transfer will solve the problem.

The option to include pictures in Family Group Sheets is wonderful. However,
I've recently encountered problems with it. When creating one (selecting
Netscape Navigator as the Destination) it displays only a relatively blank
window containing the stucco background pattern (the one I selected) but not
the text or pictures of the FGS. The window displays "Family Group Sheet" at
top center and three hyperlinks at the left - Surnames, Contact, and Index.
Opening them does not result in the desired display.

After extensive searching, I found a displayable copy in my System Folder in
a folder called "Netscape Users" as a "Users Profile" document. Also in the
Systems folder there was a copy of it in the Preferences Folder as a
"Netscape Profile Temp" document. I don't think Reunion meant to require us
users to dig these out of the System Folder but rather to display them
immediately after creating the Family Group Sheet (or Person Sheet).

By the way, by using the Destination, "Print Preview" when creating, the FGS
displays OK but without the nifty background - only a plain white one. I've
checked the online manual as well as the special Reunion website that Tricia
suggested to another RT user - to no avail. I've also gone to Options>Define
Views> and selected Show Picture. My Multimedia links have also checked out
okay. I'd hoped to show off what Reunion can do with an FGS to my PC-dominant
genealogy gathering this week but will have to postpone it, I guess.

Could someone enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

I think that the best way to send family group sheets with photos (or any

the data to the printer, you print it to PDF Writer and mail a PDF file as

I had the same problem. Now that I have FTM in Windoz, thanks to RealPC on
my Mac, it's easier to see what is happening. I have started importing the
gedcoms into FTM myself prior to sending them and cleaning things up. Much
of the problem is do to the lame capabilities of FTM - not to Reunion. So
far the only thing it has that I would like to see is the preset one page
charts with nice decorative borders and such - that Didn't require lots of
hand tweaking to get them that way. But like most Windoz programs - they
are set up for the convenience of those with no skills - and you are stuck
with what they give you.

A thought for a future version - the ability to sort the index by dates.
And some sort of generational link that would tell the program that a
person without birth/death dates is probably dead if they are BETWEEN
family members in the 1500's, etc.

The cause of the initial error message was from improperly exiting Reunion.
When you opened your family file, Reunion created the error log, ran the

I used to be plagued with crashes after quitting Netscape. I realised
that it had to do with Netscape holding onto memory it should have
released on quitting. I too tried Mac OS purge but it had no effect.
After searching the various forums, I learned that the problem could be
prevented by turning on Virtual Memory (the minimum 1 MB above installed
RAM is enough). This has worked for me for months now. Netscape frees up
its memory every time it is quit now.

To prevent crashes while using Netscape, the shareware "NavComCache
Control 1.3" is a real gem. It allows you to specify the size of Memory
Cache you wish to use.(Normally, the 1 MB default Memory Cache is not
changeable in Netscape). It also allows you to disable the Disk Cache
totally and so speeds up Netscape because RAM caching is much faster than
disk caching. Again, I've had no crashes in Netscape since installing
NCCC. The really good news is that it costs only $3. You can get it at
<http://www.io.com/~jackb/>. ( I have no connection to this shareware or
its author).

Hi Folks,

I would also like to add to the wish list the facility to make one page
[A4] charts.
Also although there is no copy/paste buttons in the note boxes you can
paste using the keyboard commands eg....commandV for paste.
As for the history of Reunion I got my first Mac....SE two floppy drives
in 1988 and Reunion the same year:-)

Subject: More info on web cards

Hi,

Here are some of my requests for Reunion, as soon as possible (Reunion 7,
or maybe a 6.x...)

1. Include more information in person web cards

- - email
- - web site
- - address (better, some parts, for example City, Zip Code and Country)

These information are stored in the address dialog, that contains couple,
his and her addresses. All of these information should be possible to be
individually selected to include them in the web and/ or family cards.
By now, I've to duplicate these information in new fields I added into the
customized entry windows.

2. Add some tree option to deploy in the web pages
Up to Reunion 4, I used to use GED2HTML to produce and push my genealogy
files on the web. There is a very good feature into it to produce trees.
I propose Franck Leister to add such a feature, where any name would have
a link to the person page with its description.

3. Reset some values to standard
Because my famly file has been built with Reunion 4, then 5, then 6, and
because I used to make my french version for Reunion, I still have some
old translated parts that are not correct on today. By now, I use the
french translation made by Roger Belanger, and there are some differences.
A good feature would be to be able to reset the translated parts stored in
the family file with the original stored in the resources (or alt
resources).

That's all for today
Best regards from Paris, France

I can see how it would be helpful to copy the entire source and control
which source fields are included in a report. However, there's currently no
way to do either in Reunion 6.

As a work around for copying a source, you could create a Source List
Report (click Report in the Source List window). After the report opens
into your word processor, you can copy the source.

The page you are seeing is the web cover page. The cover page is included
with every web report you create. To see the Family Group Sheet, you must
click the Index link. This will show you a list of people who are in your

I am in the same situation, ie; my distant cousin who is working with me
on our tree has a Windows based PC, and I a MAC OS based PC (Motorola),
however have not experienced Davids problem. I have been using Reunion
5 and she is using some other software, and has sent me ZIPPED
(compressed) GED.COM files, which I am pleased to say after unzipping
them I was able to import sans problem into Reunion. We did experience
some problems however in my sending them back to her with my additions,
but that too was in the mode of compression used rather than the Gedcom
file itself.

I was wondering is it possible that Davids file is also zipped? It
would certainly be unreadable if so.

Hi y'all,
This is a fascinating program and I have had a lot of good people assist
me in learning about my ancestors and their descendants. I have a couple
of questions. Wouldn't you know it, I have an interesting highlight that
makes me wonder how our family is the way it is!!

This may not make much sense as I don't have the terminology down pat. My
great grandfather and grandmother were first cousins. Each of their
mothers were sisters. I am wondering how I can take the info I have for my
great-great grandmother and put them into both of her daughters' ancestors
trees(?) with out typing in both times? Or how can I reverse one of the
parents (have mother on top and father on the bottom in a descendant
chart) so that the follow the same line (or maybe I don't want to do that
so that maybe no one will recognize this inbreeding!!!!!). I don't think
I'm the first to have this happen but...

Also someone sent me a Ged.com file about this part of the family tree.
They sent it from a Windows machine. I think that my Mac translated it
somehow (sometime) as I could not see an attachment in the document. Maybe
when I opened up that specific email message? How can I use this Gedcom
file? Can the data be transferred into my tree(?) ?

Any insight you can give me into these questions would be greatly
appreciated!

You can use Resedit to change the picture size on the web family card.

Go to 'STR#' ID 130, index 27 and change the third number. The first number
is for Person and Family Groups Sheets, destination Printer. The second
number is the JPEG picture file width.

The unit of measurement is 1/72 inch, so use 108 for 1.5 inches, 144 for 2

Actually, Sandra, RamDoubler (from Connectix) should provide the best of
both worlds here. It provides the extra (virtual) memory and co-exists
fine with Photoshop. I used that combination for some time until I
expanded my actual physical RAM to 256 megabytes and found RamDoubler

Subject: Searching Reunion-generated web pages

I've just found a very helpful "free" service that enables you to add a
site search engine to any web page. It's ideal for Reunion-generated web
pages. The only "down side" to it (as with most things that are "free") is
that the search results are displayed on the server's pages and they carry
banner ads (over which you have no control). There is also a fee-based
subscription option that eliminates the banner ads ($7-$30/mth). Once you
register and they "spider" your pages, they send you several lines of html
code to paste into your page. It's quite simple to implement. If you want
to see how I've used it on my own genealogical pages, visit:

Hello,

I am very much against putting any personal information, save a name, on
a web card if that person is living. I had a cousin who listed addresses
and phone numbers of his living tree on the web. Within weeks a complete
stranger, his family, and their motor home showed up at another family
member's home (one listed on the web) at 2:00am! Claimed that they were
long lost kin, and could they hang out a while? Ended up staying in their
driveway for over two months ebfore they were, um, removed. No one could
ever prove how they were related...!

I have limited information on the living on the web, for obvious reasons
(http://www.geocities.com/~dkhowell). Bravo to Reunion for giving version
6 users the means to sanitize our web cards! When I receive a query from
a stranger on a living member of my tree, I forward the request to my
family member, and let _them_ make the decision of whether or not they
want to give out their personal information. I just don't want to be
responsible for the potential ramifications, nor do I want to take away
that living family member's right to decide with whom they speak and
correspond.

Please, please - be good stewards of the information that you collect,
and protect your living tree.

I've been watching for a few weeks and thought I'd finally throw in my 2

After reading of memory use frustrations of users trying to generate big
jpeg files of charts, I thought I'd throw in my solution. A couple of
solutions actually come to mind. You can check out my charts at

http://thelees.members.atlantic.net/genepool

I also have Reunion web family cards with pictures linked from there. I love
web family cards.

My solution is to post the charts on my web site as Acrobat PDF files
instead of as jpegs. Three advantages of doing this are immediately evident:

1. The files are a lot smaller.
2. The text on the charts is searchable.
3. The charts are zoomable.

The down side is that Acrobat Distiller is another program that you have to
buy, but you may have received it bundled with something else. I work in the
graphics biz so I have access to it.

Another alternative to making the jpegs in SuperChart would be to print the
chart to an eps file from SuperChart (using Page Setup to make it fit on one
page) and then use Photoshop or anything else you may have (Ghostscript
maybe?) that can RIP an eps into an image file.

That's all for now.

SuperChart will need more RAM in order to save the chart as a JPEG file. As
a result, you shouldn't try to make really big charts.

How much RAM SuperChart needs depends on the size the chart, whether or not
you include a frame, if there are captions, etc.

As a rule of thumb, you can use the following to calculate the amount of
RAM needed...

W * H * 15552 = Amount of RAM

would like to put a picture of the person when young and older. Possibly
one at middle age. Also would like to put naturlization, birth, death,

I download the family file to a zip drive. I hope all these things can be
done. I just need to read the book, I am running Reunion 6.0 for the Mac.

It's a 2-step process but I think you can find ophan couples as follows:
Use the individual searchs to FIND "# Spouses MORE THAN 0 AND #Children
EQUAL 0 AND #Parent Cards EQUAL 0."

This will find all family cards with no children and at least one spouse
has no parents. Mark these cards then use the couple search to FIND "#
Marked Spouses MORE THAN 1."

This should then give you the subset families where both spouses do not
have any parents. That should be your orphan couples.

Orphan family searching is a bit more difficult with the current searching
capabilities and might be a useful feature.

At present, you can define your own "individual" flags to accommodate

The ability to open two files from one instance of Reunion would be nice.
However, in the meantime, I just made a duplicate of the Reunion 6

Reunion can do hourglass charts, which are simply a combination pedigree
and descendant chart for a source person...in a top-to-bottom format,
they're wide at the top and bottom and narrow in the middle, hence the
term hourglass. In Reunion, just select Create-->Relative Chart and change
the Layout option to hourglass. There's also options to include or leave
out siblings of ancestors and the source person. I think they're neat.

If you want to share your chart with a Windows user, JPEG clearly is the
format to use. However, if RAM limitations just don't allow saving as a
JPEG, you can always change the file type to PICT in the Save as Graphic
File dialog, and hope your recipient is resourceful enough to find a way
to view it (no problem on a Mac). Once it's saved as a PICT file, you can
also use shareware utilities such as GIFConverter or GraphicConverter to
change it to a format more amenable to Windows (such as TIFF or GIF). I
don't recall how big these files get. MacLink Plus also does some
conversions that might help.

Hmmm, it seems to me that the present implementation is preferable. On my
machine, the move from "New Source" to the most recently used source at
the top of the list is the shortest distance - it would be a longer
stroke to go to the bottom of the list.

to the "no children" button I put "no children" in a children's box. This
numbers the "no children" and makes a messy index.

If the "no children" option carried over to the reports, one could always
edit it out if you do not want it. Without it, you can not tell if there
are "no children", or if descendants on a specific line have not been

I would like to add two more "non-custom" date inclusions for v7.0, that is:
In the Death/Birth field add the term "fl." or flourished, which I use often
when I don't know when a person died but know when they last lived. The
second is the term, "say." I noticed in the New England Genealogical
Register, many of the articles use this term to indicate that the writer is
guessing at the date based on certain facts, i.e., if you don't know their
birth date but they had their first child in 1810, you add their birth date
as "say 1790" guessing they were probably around 20 at their 1st child's
birth. I find when indexing ancestors who all have the same name, it's
helpful to put some kind of date at least in the birth field to distiguish
from a "John born say 1490" and a "John born say 1785" but need to let myself
know (and others) that is not a sourced date.

Just a thought....

Subject: Find and Mark Almost Anything

I've pieced together a Reunion file for an in-law from a number of Gedcom
files. All merging is complete and I am now doing various cleanup. Two
'problems' arise.

1. After merging there are many blank family cards still in the file. These
may be found by going to Find Anything, Couples, and searching with # of
Spouses = 0. There are over 450 such cards, but they cannot be marked for
subsequent deletion of all marked persons (since there are no persons to
mark). How does one delete these empty Family Cards without going to the
card, dragging it to the trash, and returning to the report to repeat the
sequence over 450 times? As far as I can see, these empty card cause no
problem (except for erroneous information on the number of families).

2. After merging there are many persons with multiple birth, death and
other specific event fields, as explained in the manual for Match and
Merge. For events, it is possible to find some of the persons with multiple
fields with a Find Anything on Persons with, for example, Birth Date Is
[blank] AND Birth Date Is Not [blank]. But this picks up very few of the
hundreds of persons that have multiple fields. How does one mark all
persons with more than one field for any specified event, fact or note? If
they cannot be Found and Marked, is there any way to locate several hundred
such persons except by either opening each of the 9000 plus cards and
looking under each tab, or by printing Person Reports for everyone in the
file? It would be GREAT to have a Find Anything for any selected field
where Number > 0.

I think Chuck Willke is talking about the Add Source menu (and other

I agree with Chuck that reversing the order, which would mean that the
shortest distance would be to the most recently added source, would be a
great improvement. Working with the scroll-up menus on my powerbook's
trackpad is especially problemmatic (less so since I installed OS 8).

I have experimented moving the edit window away from the bottom of my
screen and the menus I am talking about are still scroll-up menus.

I disagree - I do not want to either buy, or use QuicKeys - I try not to add
too much stuff to my computer that messes with things at the level in the OS

However TypeIt4Me is very useful in Reunion (and lots of other places).

Subject: Web Page Setup

Can anyone help me with this problem? I generated a web folder using
Reunion 5 and tried to create a website on "xoom.com" so that I could
display my family information. I could find no way to upload the web
folder as one item. Using Netscape 3.01, I had to upload each file
individually. I uploaded the files in the order that they appeared in the
web folder. When I later checked out my website, all it showed was a list
of files. I thought maybe the website host needed time to organize it, so
I waited a few days before checking it out again. Same list of files. I
ended up deleting the whole thing from the website.

Can someone tell me what I did wrong or how I can upload the entire folder
at once?

Subject: Gedcom Transfer - Citation problems [?]

I have just upgraded from 5.06 to 6.02 [via CD ROM 6.02] and have tried
some initial expriments with Gedcom transfers.

In my "source" file several individuals have multiple notes grouped
[chronologically, to group differing opinions from different sources, etc.]
into paragraphs and carry "superscript" source citations. Some paragraphs
containing my own thoughts may not have citations. These comments apply to
both "Research" and "Misc. Notes". While some of the citations are
possibly of version 4 vintage, others are version 5 [free form, or
structured].

After exporting a 5.5 gedcom [with source citations] to disk, I have
created a new file and imported the gedcom. I find that all of the notes
are intact in the "new" file...however, all citation numbers have been
stripped from their respective paragraphs and are now grouped into a single
comma-separated string, appended to the "last" note. Since there are fewer
citations than paragraphs, this becomes rather problematic. [Other
citations, for hatches, matches and dispaches etc., appear to be OK.]

Taking a quick look at the gedcom in my word processor: the source
citations are not associated with their respective paragraphs...they are
all grouped after the last note, possibly suggesting problems in the export
function.

The question is, is this indicative of a "bug" or am I missing something?

"AFT" and "BEF" dates SHOULD NOT be calculated from. Reunion is 100%
WRONG whenever it does so. First off, "Aft 1964" means 1965 at the
earliest. For that matter, more care needs to be taken with terms. For
instance: The family card uses the word "Death". My entry "Aft 1964"
there means that they died, OR WILL DIE, sometime after 1964. It says
noting about their death other than I knew they were alive all through
1964. Likewise, "Aft MAY 1965" says nothing about whether they are dead
or alive, just that they were alive in May of 1965. Reunion's assumption
that someone is dead if there is any entry in Death is presumptive, and
incorrect reasoning. The instant that Reunion sees Aft or Bef it should
cease all date calculations... or at least use the statement correctly.

This isn't a bug. Gedcom has no provision for multiple citations in a note
field when citations are located within a string of text. Thus, when
Reunion exports a Gedcom file, it puts the citations at the end of the note.

One of our user's recently posted a work around for this Gedcom limitation.

I agree completely. Also the Statistical Report feature of Reunion should
not use this information to calculate Age at Death or Age Distribution
information. Since this type of notation may not be even remotely
equivalent to "circa" or "about" notations, basing statistical
information on "before" or "after" notations as if it were "about" throws
the statistical report off.

Any dates with "before" or "after" (or "bef" or "aft") should either not
be used for the statistical report calculations or there should be a
separate category for them.

At the present time I do not use "before" or "after" notations because of
this problem. For me, the statistical report feature is extremely
important (I made substantial use of it in the book that I just
finished); however, to generate reliable statistics, I only entered birth
and death information if I knew the exact date or a close approximation
from specific information and evidence.

By doing this, I can mark a group of people, run a statistical report,
then search that group for the subset with both a birth and a death date
to get the number of people for whom the Age at Death information applies
and know that the statistics are valid for that subset of my group. With
Reunion's present implementation of date calculations, that would not
work if I used date indicators like "before" or "after".

(I know, I could search my group for instances of "bef" or "aft" to
remove those individuals from my group before running my statistical
report but I am looking for less work, not more, and I may want to keep
them in the group for some parts of the report (if the exact birth date
is known but not the death date, then the Age at First Marriage is still
valid and I would not want the record eliminated from the group.))

I'm not sure why there is a difference in our systems. I was also
speaking of the Add Source menu. When I'm in an Edit Window and click on
"Add Source", I get a Scroll Down box with the cursor sitting on "New
Source" - directly below that is "Existing Source" and directly below
that is my 5 most recently used sources with the latest one used at the
top of the list.

I am using Reunion 6.02 on a G3/266 at home and a 7300/200 at home; both
with OS 8.5 and 17" monitors. Perhaps the monitor is the secret? Maybe
Tricia can shed some light on why this feature works differently on some
systems.

I also thought I had to have a way to sort sources. But if you just open the
list of sources, you can do a search on anything you want. For instance, I
do a search on CD and find all the sources that point to a CD. Or a search

Hello,

Most free email servers do not provide access to subdirectory creation. I
have an account with Geocities, and pay for the GeoPlus ($4.95) program. Not
only can I have subdirectories and neat JavaScripts on my pages, but the fee
also gets rid of those pesky little advertising pop ups and watermarks. Also,
I use Fetch as my FTP program. Just drag and drop the whole file onto the
Fetch window, and it uploads the whole thing - file and all.

If you don't want to pay $5 a month for subdirectories, you can create a
"flat" web site using Reunion 6. Go to Options --> Reports --> Web --> and
check the box that says "Create Flat Web Projects." Then run your web file
again.

Let me know if you need any help!

Subject: LDS CDs on the Mac.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my earlier (if cryptic) message! With the
assitance of Dennis Cunniff, I can now tell you that there is good and bad
news.
First the good:
It is quite possible to open and search the 1851 census CD on a Mac,
without PC emulation or the need for a PowerPC. Here's how I did it:

1. Get your hands on the program Folio Bound Views 3.10.3. It comes free on
several demos CDs of searchable databases (esp. law). I got mine on a demo
disc from:
http://www.fedpub.com/immigration/IRIS/irisorfm.htm
(so now you know what I do for a living <g>)
If you can't get hold of this program I'm sure I could pass along the odd
copy!

2. Insert the 1851 CD then open the application and do FILE>OPEN>1851CEN.NFO

3. The index to the census opens up!! Click on the top button in the
toolbar down the left hand edge (question mark with a magnifying glass) to
get the query dialog box.

4. You can type in one word, or a string of words (you can use booleian
AND/NOT type connectors as well). It will show the number of hits.

5. Click on OK.

6. Use the left and right double-arrow icons to move through the hits, and
click on the name you want to pull up a full entry.

7. When you are done use the little footprints button to return to the index.

There are some things you can tweak in the preferences, although most
options are disabled in this demo version. You can export data as
tab-delimited ASCII text.

You'll get none of the pretty graphics or customized query templates that
were made especially for this CD - but I don't give a fig for that stuff
anyway!!!

I have had such fun with this CD since I made this discovery - wish I'd
thought of it sooner!!

Now the bad news:
Dennis tried the same thing on the 1881 CDs - and nothing would work : - (

Apologies again for the off-topicness of this, but I know that accessing
these CDs is a cause dear to all our hearts.

Hope this helps someone,

Helen

I find when I use Smart Quotes in Reunion, they get stripped out when I
create a report. Dumb quotes seem to transfer all right. So, under
Options turn off Smart Quotes and hopefully that will solve your problem.

It sounds like your word processor is either ClarisWorks or AppleWorks.

When you create a report in Reunion, it is saved as an RTF (rich text
format) file and then is automatically opened in your word processor. The
RTF translator (version 1.1v3) that comes with ClarisWorks 4.0 or newer and
AppleWorks, strips out extended characters, such as smart quotes.

As Hope suggested, the best solution is to use dumb quotes in Reunion,
choose Options -> Smart Quotes.

There's really no problem creating a website for GeoCities or ???
You need to create an index or use Reunion to do so. I create my own
index and use Reunion to create a TOC (and choose the option of NOT creating a
separate page for surnames, etc). Upload the index you have created (I use
GoLive, but you can create the index with any web designing program or start
"from scratch" with an HTML program such as BBEdit); before uploading make
sure you have linked the "new" index to your "startup" Reunion web page
(again, for me, this is the TOC). I use Fetch to upload; however, GeoCities
offers its own program for uploading; you can also use your browser to upload
to your site. See what's offered by the server.
I *think* this is what you were concerned with. . . am I right?
Additionally, GenWeb offers unlimited web site space for strictly
genealogical sites -- that's what I use for my genealogy site -- it's the best

The "UID" field is too short and will only show 11 places. Even then,
when printing printing a Family Card Sheet with more than 9 places in

should be easy to fix as "Changed: Date" and "Mark" fields are longer
than necessary.

I second the motion for a printed Manual and would (reluctantly) pay for
one. The overhead of opening into a memory intensive browser that
insists on connecting to the Internet is cumbersome, to say the least.
On my system, The OS uses 25 MB, Netscape Navigator uses 22 MB, Remote
Access uses 436 KB and Reunion uses 4.1 MB for a total of 51.5 MB
WITHOUT using Super Chart, a word processor or printing anything. Doing
ALL of this maxes out my 64 MB of RAM. Reunion "System Requirements"
does NOT mention this.

I have successfully opened Reunion Help in iCab v1.5, but ONLY if I
launch iCab first and THEN open Reunion Help FROM iCab. I have tried to
open Reunion Help in iCab FROM Reunion, without success. And yes, I did
select it from Options -> Reports, which, by the way, is NOT intuitive.
I got gibberish.

According to Apple TechNote 1163 on Mac OS 8.6, the "Help Viewer" is a
lightweight HTML -rendering application (Browser). I would like to see
Reunion "Help" open from it using Apple Help Menu.

The "Manual" does not illustrate what an "Hourglass" Relative Chart is,
leaving it to the imagination. When I attempt to create one, I get a

charts.

I second the motion for a "Fan Chart" layout, imagination working again.

The occurrence described by Glenn Frank is not only not uncommon; such
occurrences should be found many times over in virtually every family tree of
British descent if it is traced back far enough o and he should be glad that
is the case. Otherwise the population of England alone at the time of William
the Conqueror would have had to have totalled billions upon billions instead
of the few millions that was the actual case. I suspect his proposal would
introduce difficult problems of presentation if spread over a sufficient
number of generations; or if only parts of a tree were represented by
graphics.

We're not sure why it's working differently for some people. Perhaps the
problem is with the monitor resolution, system software, or even a system

Subject: Security Issues

Dear Ellen,

I'll share a wonderful article about privacy issues and genealogy, written by
Tim Harris of the TXGenWeb:

"We should each do our part to protect our family members.

The ease of accessibility on the Internet is a strong reason to respect the
privacy of our living family members. Never place information on the Internet
about anyone who is still living, unless you have their permission to do so.
Please respect everyone's privacy and use common sense when placing
information on the web.

If you care enough about your family to search for ancestors, please care
enough to protect the descendants.

Here are a few ways you can help:

* When requesting information [via e-mail, chat, queries, etc...], don't
include personal information on living persons.
* When responding to requests for information, especially to someone you
don't really know, don't provide them with personal information on living
persons. They could post it on the web or do who knows what else with it.

* When sharing GEDCOM files with others, remove information on all living
persons before your share the file. Again, information you share could end up
on somebody's web site somewhere. Programs like GEDClean , GEDLiving , and
GEDPrivy can help automate this otherwise tedious task. If you are thinking
about starting your own genealogy web site, visit sites like Cyndi's
Genealogy Home Page Construction Kit. It is not only helpful in creating a
site, but also addresses the responsibilities that go along with it. If you
already have a genealogy web site, check your site and remove information on
all living persons.
* Be living person aware as you add new information to your site. If you are
not sure about something, when in doubt, take it out.

Learn more about privacy on the Internet and visit the Computer Professionals
for Social Responsibility web site.

A Responsible Net begins with Responsible People"

Ellen, think about what is required to obtain a driver's license in some
states - hat many consider to be de facto identification. A birth
certificate, right? How can you get one? By knowing a person's birth date,
birth place, and maother's maiden name -- all which can be gleaned from an
unsanitized gedcom, web site, or published family history. Now, many states
will not mail birth certificates out unless the subject was born 50 years ago
or more - but this isn't always the case. I had no problem having a third
party obtain my mother's birth certificate on my behalf in Texas (I won't say
exactly where).

If you are still insisting on listing information on the living, then you owe
it to those people to get their permission -- in writing -- first. If that
person is a victim of true name fraud as a result of your publication, at
least they cannot blame you. They gave their permission. But you do owe it to
them all to ask permission, and educate them on true name fraud. To me, it's
just not worth the risk.

Warm regards,

I disagree that your solution solves the problem. The idea is that for
some tasks I want to see the sources listed by author, sometimes by date,
or by publisher or whatever. Actually, a list of sources, in the order
they were entered, is probably the most usless of any possible sorting
method. The use of find is an extra, time-consuming, step that does not
always solve the problem. Being able to say "sort by author" and have a
properly sorted list every time I open sources would be a god-send! STEVE

I was wondering if there is a way to fill fields rather than one by one.
For instance, having discovered that an entire four generations of
people were Lutheran can I find a way to enter it once for everyone or
once for each.

Secondly, I noticed that one needs to add ythe Baptism field. How does
one preset for it to show up?

Subject: Importing GEDCOM with NOTES > 64K

Hello, List & LeisterPro

For the last several days, a week?, another REUNION 6 user and I have been
trying to crack a GED file with no success, no matter how much RAM is
allocated. He has a G3 with 256 MB RAM so plenty has been thrown at the
problem. Error 2, error 12 and system freezes.

He first traced the problem to lengthy SOURce documents that way, way
exceeded 64K in length. (Add to R7 wish list: increase or eliminate that
maximum). Having stripped these out with a text editor (BBEdit, I think) he
still cannot import it.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and better yet, come up with a
solution? And even better than that, Tricia, can I send the ZIPed GED file
to you for a technical analysis? ZIPed it is 1.4 MB, expanded it is about
7.2 MB, with maybe 13,000 individuals. This isn't the largest file either of
us has dealt with (try 80,000 people!), so size isn't the issue.

Question is, what IS the issue?

Armand,

I would buy any brand as long as the tube was made by Sony. Sony makes the
CRTs for most monitors. I have an Applevision 19 " on my G3 workstation and its a great tube. I have had the system for over a year now with NO problems. I installed a ZIP drive on my machine for downloading files.

I know there are some flat panel (LCD) screens out but don't know about the
reliability. I would think they would be fine since most laptops use them. I
think apple has one about 15".

Fellow Genealogists:

Although this is not a true Reunion-related problem, I would like to ask the
Reunion community for some advice on selecting a new monitor. I am currently
using Reunion V5.0 on an old Mac IIsi with a 13" high-resolution Apple
monitor. Although the computer is of vintage-age it has served me well and I
haven't had any problems with my family database. However, last week my
monitor decided to call it quits and I am now looking at replacing it with a
new monitor. My plans were to buy a new G3 (or possibly a G4) later this
year, along with a 17" or 19" monitor. Looks like I need to get the monitor
now instead of later. I would appreciate any recommendations or advice.

how about making the Gender UNKNOWN in Reunion? In any case I think you will
have to use the note field to indicate a gender change operation.

You can force Reunion to designate same gender partners on a family page....
just change each person's gender in their individule gender settings.

The trouble with deleting all at the end is that if you haven't found all
old occurrences first you may finish up with no source in some cases.

I prefer to delete the old as I add the new (as in Reunion 5), and then
do another Show Links to see if there are of the old ones I missed.
Invariably there are a few.

Chromosomeally, this person remains male. Such genetic tinkering as
"truly" changing the sex of a person is, so far, beyond our capability.
So the person remains a male in the genealogy. Appropriate notes could be
made in medical history section to relate the event. The name change, if
any, would be entered exactly as you would any other (a similar entry in
my records would show the given name as: Brian/Brook.) Currently, while
this is a significant psychological, social and medical event in a
persons life, it does not change genetic passage and therefore is of
little more interest that most any other type of major/plastic surgery.
Genetically, this person has not changed their sex, "just" their sexual
orientation.

Which is what we are recording, and is another excellent reason for the
LeisterFolk to redo the "Marriage" section and turn it into the
"Relationship" section with more appropriate and flexible types,
including some definable by the user.

or not.... How are you going to handle it if Brian/Brook marries

Not extactly what you're looking for, but there is an excellent shareware
program called "iView" available from:

Yan Calotychos <yan@xxxxxxxx_demon.co.uk>.

This program allows you to creat catalogues of your graphics (of all
sorts) and manipulate their names and sorting and storage locations and
such with ease. This program is available on most of the shareware sites,
as are various photo presentation programs, none of who's names I can
remember right now... <G> STEVE

I see RTF as an intermediate text format state between what the sender uses
and mine, and the application that is chosed to open it (in my case,
ClarisWorks 4) has the burden of completing the conversion. ClarisWorks
comes with its own translators and I have DataVis' MacLink+ 9.7 to handle
everything else including most graphics. Check your File Exchange Control
Panel and see what helper applications you have available. And note the ADD
... button if you know you have apps that File Exchange isn't 'finding'.

The article written on privacy was very good. But I thought I'd point out
that the programs that were listed for cleaning up gedcoms are all PC based.
Luckilly, Reunion does a pretty good job of allowing the user to respect the
privacy of others. One problem that should be fixed is that if you chose the
privacy feature, you must turn off the dates option in index. Because even
though living persons will be marked private, the information withheld in the
report is still published in the Index.

Thanks for the wonderful article. There is also a new website, called
Internet Genealogists for Quality, and though they are primarily concerned
with accuracy, they also have information on privacy. I forgot the url, but I
think this website has a link:

Thanks again for the great article.

This is fairly easy to do. Reunion assumes that the genders of a couple are
male and female, however you can go into one of the pair and change their
gender. Then in marriage information you can indicate that the union was
"common law" Everything else, children, etc would be handled as for any
other couple.

Subject: Re: Him/Her

I suppose I might as well jump into this topic, using the fictitious names
of Joan and John, and and jane and Joe. Joan was married twice, with two
children, say Jane and Joe, by her second husband. Joan was divorced and
had a gender change to become John, the single parent of Jane and Joe.
Noting that I had not come across any Alien Abductees among my kin (yet), I
changed that Child Status to Gender Changed. I then:

Created Joan as a daughter and John as a son of the parents of Joan/John.
Assigned Child Status of Gender Changed for both Joan and John.
Added Note explaining two names were the same person.
Added husbands for Joan and children, Jane and Joe, by her second husband.
Duplicated child buttons for Jane and Joe with John as father.

Though this does show an additional child for the parents of Joan/John, it
also clearly differentiates between Joan and John. And the relationship
between John and his children, Jane and Joe, appears as expressly desired
by their parent, while maintaining the link to their biological father and
mother.

I'm not quite sure whether you want to keep track of the locations, or
do a slide show of the photos. If you want to keep track of the images,
I would suggest 'Portfolio', by Extensis. That's what I use, and with
it I can tell just where both my genealogy pictures and scanned
documents have been saved. I also print out a hardcopy catalog and keep
it in the front of the binders where I file my information.

It requires Photoshop (or, perhaps, another program which can use
Photoshop plug-ins), but you may well have such a program if you are
scanning stuff anyway.

(BTW, if you are doing slide shows you may want to look into 'Show' by
MetaTools.)

The work around on this is to use the "Married", but then put the words
"Never Married" in the place section. You will then see it on the marriage
bar.

Whoa there! Have I been asleep or what?
Today I needed to update some data and print a Family Group Sheet (FGS) to
replace the previous one. What happened next is shock. I asked for a FGS
and what did I get? Not the printed sheet with the neat border all the way
around but the ugly sheet with the funky dashed lines across it. The FGS
that I was replacing was printed last August and it used the bordered
page. Not only that, but the Person Sheet now prints the sheet with the
border, BUT it only lists the children - that is right - only lists the
children. The funky FGS is where the details on birth, death, marriage,
and spouse are listed.
Why wasn't the previous version left alone? What makes the NOW better than
the PRIOR??
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I'm piqued.
