Subject: New user has questions
I just downloaded the Demo and will be getting the full program in a
couple of weeks. If I start using the demo can I import the file to the
full version?
And how do I import the LDS baptisms, and Temple work? I am really
excited about this program and getting my family work done. I thought
I had to buy a Win-doze machine or Virtual PC. If this intergrates with
PAF 5.2 and lets me do my Temple family work I will be very happy.

Hi,
Is there a way of marking everyone in a given range of ID numbers?
I'm still using Reunion 6 until I upgrade to OS X.

It is also possible to transfer Filemaker Pro data to Reunion using
TAB DELIMINATED DATA format. The trick is to determine what order
Reunion uses for its fields. I suspect that it is a trial and error
process of discovery.

FamilyTapes. I use Toast 6 Titanium. I have converted several tapes and
burned them CD"s. It is easy to use.

It is relatively simple but requires a bit of gear -- you will need the
following:
1 Tape player
2 Audio amplifier
3 iMike or similar (the interface between the amplifier and computer --
available at about $80AU)
4 Suitable software (I use CD Spin Doctor which is part of Toast
Titanium)
Once you get it onto the computer you can play it or sections of it in
Reunion file also burn it onto a CD and keep a copy in your iTunes.
If that's a bit daunting I am sure there are plenty of professional
people about that will do it for you or you could find a nearby
enthusiast who will do it for nothing.

I received in the mail today the current (January) issue of Macworld,
which has a feature article called "From Tape to CD" and describes a
number of programs and some procedures to do exactly what you want. The
issue should be on newsstands soon. I did a quick check and they seem
to put the articles on the web (http://www.macworld.com -> Magazine
tab), but they're delayed by a month or so (November is the most recent
up now).

Ruby,
For cassettes, all I do is use a Sony Walkman and a line out cord
plugged into the earphone jack and iMic USB preamp plugged into a spare
USB socket on your Mac. It also works by simply plugging the Walkman
into the Mac's microphone jack. Open system preferences and select
Sound to adjust levels so you don't get distortion. Start with low
volume settings and work up. (Sound engineers would shudder at this
approach, but it works for me.)
There are a number of freeware apps to handle the resulting input. From
"Audio In" a very simple app for whole tracks, to "Audacity" a full
featured app. For separating into separate tracks applying fade in &
fade out, and negating tape hiss, cutting and pasting tracks in
different order etc. Just run a Google search or perhaps use Version
Tracker to download.
The resulting file(s) is simply dragged into an iTunes Playlist and
burnt to a CD. Good luck, this is only a summary; there is a bit of a
learning curve.

Subject: printer recomendations
This is off the topic. I am using a G3 with a ColorWriter 2400. Its 10
years old. It quit printing, stuck in 2 more ink cartridges, they did nothing,
bot 4 more ink cartridges for $140, they don't work either. Poped the top off
one, and it looks like a dry well in the desart.
It would be cheaper to buy a printer with ink, than to chase this around.
Replacement ink for an existing printer should work. I am still in the direct
connect stage, with equipment connected via SCSI. I am running OS 8.1. I
know, that's anchient too. Does anyone have any suggestions for ordering
something off the web? Thanks, DaveB

Subject: Source List vs. End Notes
Is there a way to include information associated with a Source such
that that information will be included in the Source List, but not in
the end notes?
I would like to input information such as a book's call number, a
microfilm's FHC film number, etc., and the specific (paper) file name
where I store my photocopy of the source. I would like to have that
information displayed in the Source List (for the benefit of me, the
researcher), but I don't want to overload the reader of say the Family
Group Sheet with information that he/she is really not interested in.
I tried entering that kind of information into a Source Field and using
the Check boxes to not include that Source Field in the end notes, but
then it doesn't show up in the Source List either (unless I am doing
something wrong)
Thanks for your help.

Mike,
I'm not certain if it's in 6 or not. But in Reunion 8, the Find
Anything dialog includes a "Numbers" category where you can choose
"Person ID#". If you use a greater than combined with a less than,
or other combinations, you should be able to get a list that suits
your needs, and you can then mark all in the list. If that's not
everybody, you can try more such searches and mark additional lists
until you've got them all covered.

Dick,
Thanks but the enlarged view is not what I'm looking for. I guess this
is a wish list for Leister. I'd like to see "smart fields" that have
scroll arrows whenever there is text out of sight in the Misc. Notes

This subject rely concerns me. A member of my family has a Windoze XP

A short and sweet answer.... It's only an issue if you absolutely have
to run a Windoze only program. If not, don't complicate your life. If
you have to, you would buy the current version of Virtual PC which is
7. I would recommend XP Home version as that will allow you to run
pretty much any Windoze program from the beginning of time to present.
It is important to have plenty of RAM. If you are at 512 or less, it
will run pretty sluggish. I'm running Virtual PC 6 on a 1.0 Ghz eMac
with 640 MB of RAM. Performance is on par with about an 700 - 800 Mhz
Pentium 4. And that's OK for my needs (editing a newsletter -- too long
a story for here). If I were to upgrade to a full 1 GB of RAM,
performance would be more in the range of a 1.2 Ghz Pentium 4.

Overview
Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac allows you to connect to a
Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that
computer from your Macintosh computer. To connect to a Windows-based
computer, you need network access and permissions to connect to the
computer, and the computer must be running Terminal Services or Remote
Desktop Services. The following Windows products support Remote Desktop
connections:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

Subject: Calendar List problem
I am having difficulty getting the Calendar List to display more than
today's list. My wife set her Calendar List (on her computer) for
three days and it displays three days (as it should). When I set it
for three days, it goes back to one day (today only).
Here's what I have tried: I select Options on the Menu bar and then
click on Startup. The Startup window I get has two parts: Home and
Calendar. I select Calendar and see a check box (checked) "On startup,
display a calendar list for ..." [ Birth ], a radio button Today
(selected), a radio button Next [ 3 ] Days (deselected), and a check
box Living Only (unchecked). I then click on Next [ 3 ] Days. (Next
is selected and Today is now deselected.) I then click on Save. I quit
Reunion 8. I then relaunch Reunion 8 and see the Calendar List for
today only. I then check to see if the setting changes I made are
still changed. I click on Options --> Startup --> Calendar. The
settings are back like they were originally: Today is selected and
Next [ 3 ] is deselected.
Any ideas why the change is not saved???

Welcome aboard, Ted!
No, the information you have entered into the Demo version cannot be
imported. As noted on the web site,
* Only 35 people can be entered in a family file.
* Import/Export is disabled.
* Graphic charts can't be saved or copied.
* Electronic manual is limited to the Tutorial.
If you have your ordinance information in another genealogy program,
it 'should' import directly through a gedcom export / import routine.
I put 'should' because few export / import is without some hitches.
I went from an early version of PAF for the Mac and the only thing
that didn't seem to work was that the suffixes (Junior, etc) came
through as prefixes. The ordinance information came across just fine.
You won't be able to take advantage of some of the add-on programs to
PAF (such as Insight), and you won't be able to take the output from
TempleReady and update your Reunion file automatically; the updates
will have to be done manually from the TempleReady printout.
With that said, Leister took a lot of effort to make the program
LDS-compatible, and I think they did the LDS researchers a great
service. It certainly is my program of choice.
You are welcome to contact me directly if you run into problems.

I think the use of the word "import" is a bit misleading. While it is
true that the import/export functionality has been disabled in the
Demo version, a family file created in the Reunion 8 Demo can be used
in the full version of Reunion 8. We recommend that you completely
remove the Reunion 8 Demo from your hard drive before using the full
version.

Subject: Mailing addresses
Hope someone can solve my problem:
First, I made a copy of my Reunion v.8 family file and worked from the
family file copy.
Then: List (main menu) > mailing addresses > marked people > list = a
mailing list.
Problem: How does one tell from the list who belongs to whom and where?
I do not know everyone who is in my huge database. I would like to
export the mailing list to an Excel spreadsheet, where I can sort the
people into family groups.
I tried the following: Go > Children's menu on family card > entered a
number before each person (example 1.1 John; 1.2 Joseph; 1.1,1 Michael
and so on. The numbers will show up on the family card before the names
but will not change in the mailing list.
Problem: When I go to list > mailing addresses > marked people = mailing
list, the numbers do not show up before the name.
Can someone tell me why the numbers are omitted? If the numbers were
there, after exporting to an Excel spreadsheet, I could simply cut and
paste the numbers into another column, allowing me to sort the
spreadsheet by numbers to organize the families in order of linage.
There are a number of good reasons for transferring to a spreadsheet.
For example, I could go directly into my email program from the
spreadsheet or can use the spreadsheet to merge addresses into Word
documents to send out bulk mailings.
Perhaps the Leister experts can help here. Thanks.

I prefer the Family Card without any scroll bar. And I am happy enough
with the one click in the Notes Field to the Edit Person window. If
"Smart Fields" on the Family Card is on the wish list for Leister, my
wish should be to make it an option that can be turned off.

To be honest with you, Reunion is a great program. I have been making
the norwegian translation since v. 5, so I know. But saying that, I
also have to say that Reunion like most other software of this type has
its "small holes". I've come across some "hurdles" when importing and
exporting gedcom. When this is said, there are ways to avoid the
problems. I learned the lesson after making 1200 entries, all with
sources like church books etc. My advice today is this; - make a small
file with a couple of families, try to be creative in using sources and
then export to a gedcom file. Find colleges with a PC and different
programs and let them import your gedcom. With the feedback you get
from this, you can adjust your way to enter the sources so that other
programs get all the information you have in your sources. As mentioned
earlier in this tread, gedcom is not a perfect standard yet, but still
the only way to exchange large family files between the different
programs. Another thing to watch up for is the gedcom tags that the
software developers has invented along the route, and you won't find in
other programs. Download the Gedcom 5.5 standard from the the web, and
compare the tags in your gedcom file with this. See if there are tags
that doesn't show up in the Gedcom 5.5 standard, and try to avoid using
them.

If you don't plan on upgrading for a while, I recommend you see if you
can find a used Epson Stylus 740i. They are reliable and work with Macs
(back to OS 7.5) and Windows computers. They have parallel, serial, and
USB ports (so you can use it with OSX computers too). And third party
ink cartridges are available for about $8 for black and $13 for color.
The printer prints beatiful photographs too, with special paper. To my
knowledge, there are no currently manufactured printers that can be
used on older Macs with a serial printer port.

One other thing - this is a bug known by Apple -
Changing permissions, then clicking "Appl to enclosed items" does NOT

Subject: Entering identical data as a "batch"?
Is there a way in Reunion to enter an identical "string of text" into
a particular "empty field" in a "batch?" This is so easy to do in
FileMaker, or in Excel or Word, using "fill down" or "replace all."
(Example: insert "?" or "unk" as the Death Date for everyone who was
born before 1890, where that field is still empty - which is hundreds
of individuals in my file.) I envision something on the order of how
"set/clear flags" or "mark/unmark" works - but used to enter
identical data into a specific field of one's own choosing, for a
particular group of records.
If this cannot be done at the present time, please add this
suggestion to the "wish list"!
Thanks for any suggestions or workarounds that anyone can think of!

Subject: An update on the 1901 UK Census site
QinetiQ is doing its best to stop us getting much out of the 1901
census site. There have been at least three - possibly four - changes
to the site since since the New Year. The latest managed to make my
1901 census decoder (that's the Classic one) utterly useless.
So far as I can tell the current situation (12 March 2004) is as
follows:
1. The personID field is now completely randomised and is no longer of
use in sorting families. Furthermore, it is a hexadecimal string of
around 32 symbols. However, it does appear to remain invariant WITHIN A
SINGLE SESSION.
2. The pageID is now a hexadecimal string of around 16 symbols. It also
appears to remain invariant WITHIN A SINGLE SESSION.
If this is true, and not just a fluke of the experiments I did this
morning, it is still possible to merge searches and get meaningful data
as long as the results are sorted by PAGE and not by PERSON. But the
downside of this is that if you have overlapping searches, names will
be duplicated.
Version 1.3 of my decoder works in this way, EXCEPT that if you include
a bullet € (<option>8) anywhere in the Finder Name of the application,
it will revert to sorting by personID and discarding duplicates.
I will get round to revising the documentation and updating the web
site as soon as I can, but until you see version 1.3 there, ignore it.
If you want a copy, contact me direct. I have already e-mailed a copy
to all known users.
I've no idea how long it will be before it all changes again. It could
well be before the web site is updated, at the present rate!

was enumerated in that household. Then I cite the source for the event.
Is that what you are talking about? If it is, then I already am doing
that. What I meant about TMG is that you enter in your source data,
create a census event, cite the source, and TMG asks you which people
in your database (or new people) that you want included in this event.
It gives you the opportunity to have the program do the tedious work
for you of including each of these individuals as participating in that
event. I'm sorry if I'm missing your point here, LOL. I have been known
sometimes for not seeing the forrest for the trees. Is this one of
those times? :)

Disk Utility cannot do the "Repair Disk" function on the disk
you're currently booted from. To do that, you'd need to boot
from the Mac OS X install CD, as George H. suggested.
But Disk Utility *can* do "Repair Disk Permissions" on the
disk it is booted from. No need to insert any CDs, just
go to Applications : Utilities on your hard disk, and run
Disk Utility right there. In fact, this may be better than running
it from the install CD, because if you have done any OS
upgrades installing from the CD, there's a (small) chance
that the Disk Utility on your hard disk is newer and better.
Steve J. brings up the subject of how often to repair permissions.
I've seen widely varying opinions, from "never" to "several
times a day." My own habit is between these extremes:
I do it after each install session (i.e. if I install several things,
I repair permissions once after I'm all done), and whenever
weird behavior happens that I cannot explain or fix through any
obvious mechanism (most times, Repair Permissions has
nothing to do with it, but it's easy and it doesn't hurt and
occasionally it helps).

George: I do it all the time. Disk Utility is just a new name for the
old First Aid application but differs by having new features like
repairing permissions. In fact, I let my system do it automatically via
a piece of shareware named Macaroni which initiates this and the UNIX
daily, weekly and monthly maintenance runs in the background. You might
be confusing this with some other application with same or similar
name.

George,
What he is talking about is "Repairing Permissions" not repairing a
disk. The Permissions not only can be repaired with the Disk Utility
on the disk being repaired, it is advisable to do so. I believe this
is a Jaguar change so if he is using an earlier version this does not
apply.

Dick,
I can't say positively without hands-on access, but I'd be willing to
bet that the disk is in the ISO 9660 format (aka Joliet, I believe).
This isn't the usual MS-DOS format that late model Macs before OS X
could simply read without any tricks or assistance.
If that's true, you'll need an extension added to your System Folder
to be able to read this CD. That extension is called "ISO 9660 File
Access" and lives in the Extensions folder. My Classic environment
has one dating to 2000 and it's labeled 9.2.2, so I can't say for
certain if it'll work for you. But if you can't find one elsewhere,
I can send it to you if you want. It should enable you to read the
CD.

This proves what many of us have said for years: PCs are dumb! :-)
Actually, it goes further than that. PC users sometimes aren't all
that bright, either. The truth is that they could read it before if
they knew how to force their programs to read the files sent to them.
But Windows only "knows" how to read a file without explicit user
instructions if it's got an extension in its name. We Mac users have
a long history of not using them (we don't need no steenking
extensions!!). But it's good advice to include an appropriate file
extension on anything you send to a PC-using friend or relative. And
perhaps a bouquet of flowers (to show your sympathy) would be in
order. :-D

Hello, wise ones!
I've been using Reunion for a couple years, and I've learned a lot from
reading this list. I searched the archives for a discussion of the
problem I'm having, and didn't find an answer. I didn't find anything
in Help, either.
My cousin uses Family Tree Maker 3.0 (although he swears he's about to
update to the latest version), and is trying to share a gedcom with me.
I'm using Reunion 8.05. Reunion imports it fine EXCEPT that, for
individuals with more than one note, it will only import one note, even
though all the notes for an individual have the same field name and
number. When I open up the gedcom as a text file, I can see (and read)
all the notes. Since a lot of the good stuff is in the notes, I'd
like to have these in Reunion!
For example, the notes for George C. Carriker look like this in gedcom.
The only Note that's imported is the line of equal signs (and this
seems true with many of the notes, although perhaps not all). I tried
removing all of the equal signs before importing, but that didn't fix
the problem-- none of Georges notes appeared then, although I suspect
it was importing the 'empty' note field left by removing the ====.

Dick,
I assume you are reading this CD on a Mac. How old is your Mac? Some of
the older Mac CD readers don't read every home-made CD out there. Try
it on another machine, windoze or Mac. Also, some readers have trouble
with multi-session discs.
By the way, there is a possibility that you were accidently sent a
blank CD. Take a look at the clear side of the disk and examine it in
the light. Unless the GEDCOM file is the size of a full disc, you
should see two bands. A clean, unbanded surface would indicate a blank
disc. Compare it to some of your other CDs and you'll see what I mean.
Good luck,
John

Specifically, the older Macs seem to have an issue with the *capacity* of
the homemade disk: 650 meg disks seem to read fine, 700 meg disks don't.
Most blank disks available now, of course, are 700s.....

In the several years I have used Reunion, often for several hours a
day, I have had it crash only three or four times. (I have had
similar experience with Eudora; only a handful of crashes in at least
15 years of using various releases of that email package.) But those
were not really Reunion or Eudora crashes; in each case, the whole
system froze. I believe that all of the recent incidents were the
result of MS Word, probably when a Word print task (to print a report
generated by Reunion) was running in the background. In my
experience, that has been a frequent case of problems when running on
OS 8 or 9; in earlier releases, 10 or more years ago, the villain was
usually the Netscape browser.
Martha, my point is that Reunion and Eudora are very well-coded, but
no matter how good an application is, the only way to protect it
against bad applications is to use a OS that effectively isolates
those apps. That means that you need to move to OS X.

I have that printer. It is a great model. But never leave it on when
not in use. Or at the very least, shut it down every night. It has
one quirk that will cause problems if you leave it on for long periods
of time. The constantly warm innards attract dust, and print jobs come
out messy. This was the topic of much anguish on various e-lists when
the 740i model first came out. The action of turning the pinter on
after a shutdown provides for self-maintenance and head cleaning
action. This hygiene is necessary, although some folks would prefer
not to "waste" the ink.

I use Grammarian x Pro which checks both grammar and spelling in any

text you want to check and it does it's thing depending on what your

and claims to check 150 grammar rules compared to 26 in MS Office. This

In case you haven't run into this situation yet - it was new to me, but
I am new to Reunion:
I have ancestral father and son with the same name, Franklin Robinson.
I had cited the same census source (year, county, page) and used the
Details to show how their names appeared - Page 315, "Franklin
Robinson" in both cases. Since the source and the detail were
identical for both individuals, Reunion assumes they are the exact same
person and used only one Endnote number, whereas I had intended to have
two "different" Endnotes. By adding a unique line number in addition
to the page number, the FGS turns out like I "intended."
BTW, there has been some discussion within this group recently about
the use of Details. I like to quote the words from the source in the
Details. As we all know, different parts of an Event (e.g. a birth date
and place) may come from different sources, and there is often
conflicting information between different sources. By quoting the
words from the source, I can easily see which information came from
where and see the conflicts without having to look through my files of
sources.

If I understand your question correctly, you've got your family
file(s) from Reunion 7 backed up onto zip disks, right? The obvious
question is why you weren't keeping good backups of your newer
data... :-(
No need to use Reunion 7 if you've got one or more family files from
it. Just install Reunion 8 (if it's not already there), and make
sure you've got the latest updates. Launch Reunion 8 and ask it to
open your v7 family file. It will inform you that it has to upgrade
that file (since there's been an internal format change). When you
give permission, and a new name, it'll load your old family file into
the new format and save it just fine. The previous v7 family file
will be left behind untouched -- just in case.
Good luck.

line in your example, "0 @N10008@ NOTE") so I did a "find and replace"

allowed the rest of the notes to print in full. You might test out a
similar solution by saving the gedcom to a text editor like TextEdit or
Word, do a find and replace and delete the "0 @N10008@ NOTE wherever
it appears in (after making sure you save the original so you don't
lose anything) and seeing how the notes look in the revised gedcom
looks when imported.

Reunion made no assumption that they were the exact same person; only
that the source & detail were identical, hence it did not assign a new
number. That Reunion allows one report source number for identical
source-detail is one of its real strong points. Many other programs
assign a new number with every citation, resulting in very long,
repetitious lists of hundreds of unnecessary numbers. I often use
copy-paste for detail to ensure I don't make a slight change by typing,
resulting in a new source number in reports.

Subject: Web Cards to mac.com
Apologies in advance as I know this has been discussed. I've read
everything in the archives and communicated with a couple of you
offline but I'm stumped (and frustrated). If anyone can help, feel
free to contact me on the list or privately.
I have tried this two ways.
First, when I created my web cards, I named my toc page "home.html"
as was recommended. I also renamed the index.html in the file
something else. I dragged my web cards to my Sites folder and as I
have a large file (although I have cable internet) it takes a l-o-n-g
time to load. On mac.com, I add a page using "advanced" and
"external html". I see all my web cards and choose home.html and
publish. It creates the web page but none of the graphics or pages
other than the table of contents is there. Am I supposed to somehow
"publish" all the pages? I thought because they were in the sites
folder, they were there.
The second thing I tried (because I did want to password-protect the
site) is create a site with a name (familyfile) and password. It
creates a folder inside the sites folder. Then I dragged all the web
cards into that folder. Following the steps above I "chose"
home.html. Again it created the home page but without graphics and
the rest of the file. This time however if I clicked "surnames" and
it gave me a page not found message, I manually entered "familyfile"
(the name of the site) into the URL and there it was. Still no
graphics but the rest of the web cards seem to be there. But nothing
is linked automatically.
I'm stuck on how I get all the pages and graphics onto the web site,
preferably password-protected. I can't imagine how to upload the
pages with the correct linking. And I can't tell you how many times
I've loaded, reloaded, and moved these darn web cards - each time
taking hours. I REALLY want my file on mac.com. :-)
I've visited some of your sites including Steve Jackson's and Janet
Mobley's (which I love) and tried to follow the linking but I'm just
stymied. Any help appreciated - onlist or off.

I'd rather hoped that someone would reply to this, because I'd like to
tap the experience of others myself!
In particular, what do you do about:

Several others have helped me with the webcards. I'm still a newbie,
but have gotten to the point that I can upload my revisions fairly
"comfortably." I make notes and refer to them often, but it seems to
work for me - usually. Having said that, I must confess that my latest
upload left some peculiar spacing on my homepage. I'll take care of
that on my next upload. BTW: I am on cable and my upload takes about

Steve,
Yes, you can put your webcards on the DVD-ROM portion of the DVD
using iDVD. Go to the "Advanced" menu and select "Edit DVD-ROM
Contents...". It will open a window of contents (empty to begin
with) and you simply drag what you want into that window. The
resulting DVD will have DVD-Video and DVD-ROM contents. There will
be a folder on the DVD with a name which begins with the name of your
iDVD project and ends with "DVD-ROM Contents". It won't auto-play
your webcards on Mac or PC, but if a user navigates to the folder and
then to the beginning card, they should be able to browse your
webcards.

I am not the best person to answer these questions. I may not even
completely understand them. But I'll put forward what I am now doing
in the hopes of sparking some discussion which will improve my efforts
and others.
I came to Reunion 8 from PAF where almost everything other than names,
dates and places was freeform. When I came to Reunion, I did not like
Reunion's suggestions for recording different kinds of sources, so all
of mine were freeform. Then I bought "Evidence! Citation and Analysis
for the Family Historian" by Elizabeth Shown Mills, a very respected
genealogist, speaker, author and former long time editor of the
"National Genealogical Society Quarterly." The book is easy to find
for sale and is about $17.00. In it, Mills gives 36 pages of examples
of how to cite 98% of my sources. I felt the other 2% were easy to
cite using the 98% as a guide. Apparently this book is the new
standard for genealogy. That is not to say other sources are wrong,
however.
I began to disregard all Reunions suggestions and followed Mills'
book's examples. Then I renamed almost all of my sources from
"freeform" to reflect what kind they were (book, gravestone,
periodical, etc.). That may not have been necessary but several times
I've done searches on the type of source which is nice. A few of my
sources did not fit any of Reunion's categories so I added a few of my
own, but don't remember which ones they were. I think all of Mills"
examples make clear what type of media they are. Basically, all of my
sources are written freeform following Mills' examples.
In my first genealogy class, the instructor recommended copying each
source and putting it in a folder named with the surname so I could
refer back to it if necessary. Eventually there were a lot of
documents in some large surname folders and they were getting worm and
torn by all of the searching through them. I've been surprised at how
many times after I've entered the pertinent information from a source
into Reunion that I've wanted to go back and check something. I have
some books of sources, such as compiled genealogies, deed books, etc.
Those are cited as Mills suggests. If I find one or several sources in
a book at a library, I xerox the pages containing them together with
the title page of the book, making sure I have all of the information
to properly cite the book it (or the magazine or microfilm) and staple
the pages together. The copyright date and place or publisher might be
on the back of the title page. If so, I write it on the front of the
copy of the title page I made and put the date and library name on the
back of the same sheet. After I get home, I paper punch the several
pages and put them in a three ring binder.
Then I name the document I copied at the library. The first document
in the binder is coded "HEX 1" which is written on the title page of
the copy I made at the library. This is short for "Holder exhibit #1,"
Holder being my father's family. My mother's and some other related
families are named and coded the same way based on the surnames. The
other documents are numbered consecutively in whatever order they were
received, HEX 2, HEX 3. If HEX 56 is a a microfilm copy of a
handwritten will or deed, HEX 56a can be its transcription or a way to
keep related documents together, which is not really necessary, but
convenient for transcriptions. When I enter the citation into Reunion,
I include the number of the document in the citation in parentheses
usually immediately after the parenthesis containing the place of
publication, publisher, and copyright date and immediately before the
page number.
Some documents may go in archival plastic page protectors because they
are old and frail or valuable originals. In that case, my exhibit
number is written on another piece of paper and included in front of
the first page so it is clearly visible in the plastic sleeve.
Photographs are handled the same way, named as Holder Photos or "HPO"
1, 2 and so on, whether they are photos of gravestones, photos of
original documents or photos of my ancestor's Civil War rifle. So
every source I have (so far) is either in a book, binder or photo
album. When I go through Reunion, I know exactly where the document or
photo is filed unless it indicates it is in a book I have by not having
the code in the citation. When a binder or photo album is filled, I
label its spine with the number range of the items it contains and go
to the next album, continuing the sequential numbering system. Each
source is therefore immediately available.
Examples are: John Frederick Dorman, editor, Adventurers of Purse and
Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5, 3rd edition (Richmond: The Dietz Press,
1987)(HEX 150),
and: Family Data, Joseph Gray Bible (front cover and several pages
missing so there is no title page, location, publisher or date.
However written at the top of the first page of family data is =93Joseph
Gray 1834.=94 The bible appears very old) Bible owned by (owner and
provenance deleted). This bible was photographed by George L. Holder
on 5 June 2002 (HPOs #160-165).
A transcription of the information in the photos of this bible is filed
as an HEX.
I know this might be overkill but I feel the little extra time to do
this has saved me a lot more time searching for sources. I also always
have an up to date list of sources in the event of a catastrophic fire
or something. It is very quick and easy to find a source to be copied
and sent to another researcher. The only disadvantage is that I have
to either explain or remove the exhibit numbers. I also tried other
numbering systems, mainly numbering documents by generation, but I
think this is easier.
Sorry. I thought I could explain it in a lot fewer words.
Comments are appreciated.

Subject: Re: Web Cards to mac.com
Yvonne,
a few thoughts on your problem.
You say that you named your toc page "home.html" and then that you
"renamed the index.html in the file something else." How did you do
this? If you did it from within Reunion, everything should be OK; if you
did it outside of Reunion, in the Finder say, by just clicking on the
file name and renaming it, then you will have problems because all of
the web cards created by Reunion will not "know" about this renaming,
and so will not be able to find anything. Any renaming you do must be
from within Reunion, or you must use an html editor (for exampel BBEdit
lite, but there are others) to change all of the link references in all
the pages.
I'm not an expert on using the password protection within .mac, but one
thought on what you have done there. You say that you dragged the files
from one file to another. Again, this will have changed the "path" to
those files, and the html code within the home.html document will need
to be changed (at a minimum).
It looks like you are assuming that by changing the locaiton of one or
more files, all of the paths to those files will automatically update --
after all, that's what happens when you work in the Finder.
Unfortunately, web pages don't always update automatically.
Suggestion: Try to create a file directory on your desktop that has the
same structure as on your .mac page. For example, create a folder called
"sites" and then within that create your web cards. That way you can
check whether everything works BEFORE you upload. It will save you time.
Note that uploads are nearly always a lot slower than downloads, by the
way. Nearly all internet service providers give you really great
download speed, because they think that is what most people want (and
they are probably right). Few give you upload speeds that come anywhere
near, unfortunately.
Finally, if you gave us the address of your page, maybe we could take a
look to help you out ;)

Pollyanna,
Before adding any multimedia items, you may want to first decide on
where you want the pictures to be kept. By default, Reunion plans to
find them in the "Pictures" folder that's in the folder where Reunion
itself is installed. I usually suggest creating your own folder
close to where your family file and other genealogy data is located
so that it can *all* be backed up together conveniently. Choose
Multimedia on the Options menu and you can add and remove folders
from the list of places Reunion will automatically look.
Once you've got a picture (or one of several other types of
multimedia files, like sounds, movies, etc.) copied to the designated
location, you can add a link to it from any number of family cards.
The simple way is to find the button near the top of Reunion's window
and click it, then select Multimedia Window. In the resulting
window, you'll see tabs for each person on that family card and one
for Family. Choose whichever you prefer, and use the Add Item button
to link the picture to that person or family.
If you want to see pictures on the family card, you should be aware
that you'll only be able to see one -- the one you designate as
"Preferred" in that window. On the Options menu, look under Define
and choose "Views..." where you can set a find a checkbox to "Show
Preferred Picture". This may be on by default, but it's been a long
time...

Lola,
If there's damage to your family file, this might be a result. But
it's definitely possible to get that particular relationship. I have
just such a thing in my data where my 6G Grandfather in one line
married his own niece. As a result, his brother becomes both my 7G
Uncle and my 7G Grandfather, while his father is also my 7G
Grandfather. It's highly confusing, to be sure. I'm not sure
whether I'm hoping it's incorrect information or I should be
embarrassed about it all. :-)

Subject: Re: ? Source Fields and what they are
Even tho I am a "newbie" to Reunion, I am going to jump in here and
tell you what I have doing - if you more experienced users think I am
getting myself in trouble by doing this, please let me know.
As far as I know, Source Types don't have a GEDCOM "tag" associated
with them - they are simply a collection of Source Fields, each of
which does have a GEDCOM tag. I assume, without looking at the GEDCOM
spec, that some of those fields and tags exist in the spec and some are
"extensions" used by Reunion. So it looks like the Source Types that
are built into Reunion are the software designer's take on some typical
ones that would be useful for us users.
I recently converted my database of about 1,200 names and 200 sources
from FTM on a PC to Reunion on a Mac via a GEDCOM file. All of my
sources came over as "Free Form" sources in Reunion, so I had the job
of re-defining all of them. I used some of Reunion's built-in Source
Types such as Book, URL, etc., but also created some new ones that
seemed to fit my sources better. I won't bore you with all of my
unique ones, but e.g. I created one Source Type which I named "Church
Record" for vital records obtained from Church/Parish registers,
membership books, etc. For Source Fields I used Reunion's Title,
Locality (of the original), Page, Date Viewed, Media Type and Location
of Source. I did not try to create any new Source Fields, since I
would have to assign some arbitrary GEDCOM tag, which might get me in
trouble later.
In answer to Mark Dodd's and John Hill's specific questions, I use
Media Type to define whether I have the original of the document, a
photocopy of the original, etc. I use Location of Source to tell ME
where I have filed my copy of the source e.g. do I store it in a
specific family file (I do this if it is unique to an individual), or
in a general file of say Methodist Archive information (if the document
has information on more than one individual). Then I do one other
thing - for those two specific Source Fields, I check the box that says
"Exclude from end notes" since those are for my information, including
them would clutter up the end notes, and someone othere than me who
looks at my Family Group Sheets could care less about those two pieces
of information
I am sure other folks use these in different ways.

Very easily. A descendant of one brother could have married a descendant

> What did I do wrong? And how do I correct it?
There may not be anything wrong.
From your family card select Options -> Direct Lines Bold
In Step 1 select Make All Child Buttons Plain, in Step 2 select your own
button, click OK
Now go to the family card of the parents of the two brothers. You will
probably find that the child buttons of the two brothers are in Bold.
Create -> Descendant Report. Select 8 generations and in the Prune area
select Bold Descendants Only. Click Open
Reunion will generate two descendant lines from the brother's parents
with you near the end of both. The earliest husband/wife couple which is
common to both of your lines are who Reunion thinks are the descendants
of the two brothers.
From there you should be able to work where the error is if there is one.

If you're just getting started with pictures, I have several
suggestions. You may use the Reunion Pictures folder or create your own
folder--I named mine Multimedia. Within that folder create separate
folders for photos, audio and movies. Within those folders you might
want to create subfolders if you think you will have a lot of one kind
of item. I have created six photo folders, one for each major branch
of the tree. That helps to keep the folders smaller and more
manageable as your collection grows. Having everything in one master
folder simplifies matters when you move your Reunion file to another
computer. I move mine back and forth from laptop to desktop
frequently. Each time I do I must tell Reunion where to look for the
pictures and its easier to do if everything is in one folder.

Clear out your data first, save it on discs. I assume you have the
original discs for your various software programs.
I'd suggest you buy a copy of OSX. Do a clean install. You may want to
have this done at your local computer store or have a tech savvy friend
help you. Then go to:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25575 for the article:
Mac OS: Moving files from your older Macintosh to a new one.
Move you Reunion data back to the iMac. Buy Reunion 8, you can buy the
update, not the whole new program. After you have installed Reunion 8,
just go to your Reunion files, double click and Reunion will upgrade
everything to version 8. Magic? No, just good programming from Leister.
Then, go to: http://www.apple.com/usergroups/ and find the user group
near you and join it. You can get all sorts of free help from the
members; New User Special Interest Group (for people upgrading their
OS), Genealogy SIG, and other SIGs of interest, monthly newsletter,
web site, etc.

Subject: Upgrade to Reunion Version 8
I'm troubled when I read that other users are having a problem with
some not-current version of the program--sometimes one that's several
versions old. Beyond that a later version has often addressed their
problem, I'd like to address what I see as a bigger issue with those
among us who hold off upgrading. I hope I won't offend anyone by
getting on my soapbox for a moment to explain.
Note: I've been a beta tester for several versions of "Reunion"
(including version 8) and have often spoken at venues in support of
"Reunion", but I've never been employed by Leister Productions, have
nothing to gain financially by their success, and am making this
submission solely on my own initiative. I'm just a long-time,
enthusiastic, "Reunion" user who is most thankful for the product.
(1) Leister Productions is a very small software-development shop
and, for all practical purposes, "Reunion" is their only product.
Their existence depends on revenue from a product developed for a
small number of Mac users. While I know I'm not alone in considering
"Reunion" the very best genealogy program available, regardless of
computer platform, the total number of sales can't be huge and the
pricing of "Reunion"--whether new or upgrade--is modest for all that
it does. More important, those prices pale in comparison to the
investment most of us make as we explore our family history--both in
direct costs and imputed from our time & effort.
(2) Sure, there's bound to be some particular feature you want that
hasn't yet made it into the latest version, but each version has
provided many new and significant enhancements--most of which will be
of benefit to you and many of which have been requested by users.
(The features version 8 brought us over version 7--with links for
what the earlier versions provided over their predecessors--are
posted at
<http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/Version8/NewFeatures/NewFeatures8.html>.)
(3) Most of us using "Reunion" are looking forward to the next
version to enhance our genealogical endeavors. But let's face it, if
we don't provide an on-going revenue stream, at some point there
won't be that next version (or a company-backed ReunionTalk).
Everyone will be the loser if "Reunion" becomes a program that died
off because of lack of on-going financial support. So your upgrade
now, besides getting a better version of "Reunion", is also your
investment in the future of "Reunion".
I really do appreciate it's your money that I'm talking about, but I
hope those with earlier versions of "Reunion" will consider my points
and, if at all practical for their pocketbooks, decide to upgrade to
v8 now.

Hello Jack,
I've not had an opportunity to use it but I understand that OS-X v10.3.x
has a provision for connecting a new Mac to an old one via a Firewire
cable and using that connection to extract all pertinent files from the
old Mac. This, I've been told, is part of the the new OS package. (And I
hope that it is not unique to the G-5!) I probably have a Firewire cable I
could loan you if you don't have one. (You know where to find me!)
I assume that your Zip 250 uses a USB connection; if so, they can be
"hot-swapped" between the two Macs. (Contact me if you require a Zip drive
with a SCSI connection for the iMac.) If you use the Zip disk you may need
to install the driver for it into the iMac. I don't recall if it is
already included in the OS package, but it might be; you'll know quickly
enough if you insert a disk and it shows up on the desktop. If not, you'll
need the driver. Then, you will need to find all of the iMac files you
want to transfer, copy them to a Zip disk, reconnect the Zip drive to the
eMac and transfer them over.
Reunion 8 was written to run native on OS-X so that should be reason
enough to upgrade; plus you get some additional features that are well
worth having. I think you can get Rv8 for an upgrade price, check
Leister's web site <http://www.leisterpro.com>. The progression of feature
improvements are posted at
<http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/Version8/NewFeatures/NewFeatures8.html>,
and they are substantial. (Also, since Leister Pro is a very small shop
and Reunion is their only product, we Mac users do need to support them.)
You can convert files directly from Rv6 to Rv8; actually from as far back
as Rv4 and Leister offers help to convert earlier files. I just did a
conversion from an Rv6 file by creating a new file, naming it and
importing an old family file into the new one. The conversion probably
took less than a minute (OK, yes, it was a very small file!) and it left
the old file intact. But there is a still easier way. Check the Reunion v8
Help file, there's an "Upgrade" option in the "Help" drop-down window that
will guide you through the process.

Steve,
I see two potential problems. The first one is that iDVD burned it as a
"Progressive Scan" movie. I noticed on the web that the Philips DVP 520
does not use Progressive Scan.
The second problem could be a media issue. Do it again but on a DVD-RW
disc. I have noticed that ReWritable discs tend to perform better.
Also, RW discs can be reused, so you won't be wasting discs trying to
resolve your problem.
Good luck,

Martha,
First and foremost, it goes without saying that you should upgrade to
a newer version of OS X if at all possible. In addition to many new
features and bug fixes, it's an all-around better OS than 10.1. One
of the internal changes could have an impact on everything you do is
journaling, which is turned on by default. Without getting overly
technical, it's a way of helping to reduce the risk of problems on
your disk if things crash or otherwise go awry.
But as for fixing your family file, the best advice I personally
could offer would be to try using the Save a Copy feature, and create
a compact copy. I don't know if doing so ordinarily loses saved
found lists, but it does lose those that aren't saved. And it will
cause your index to need rebuilding when next you open the copy. It
also forgets the last family card(s) you viewed, so that the left
arrow in the Reunion window won't take you there, and numerous other
details.
Doing this will in no way affect your existing family file, so you
may want to compress it and set it aside for a while to see if you're
sure the problems are resolved. If not, you may also try removing
the "Reunion 8.0 Preferences" file in your personal Preferences
folder. Trash it and then start Reunion to see if it helps. Doing
this will cause you to have to reset certain things, too, like where
your multimedia folder(s) are located, some font settings, and so on.
Good luck.

Have you updated Mozilla recently? I am suspicious because I know
Reunion, Acrobat and OS 10.1 all to be pretty trouble-free.
The Mozilla group are continually "fixing" things since it is an open
source project. And not all fixes are forward progress. Actually, I
would recommend switching to FireFox. It's put out by the same group
but is more stable and looks/operates very similar to Mozilla. Added
benefit is that it is much faster than Safari or Explorer.

My thoughts on your problem are:
1. 384 MB of Ram is "MARGINAL" for your Application programs and
Operating System.
I suggest you increase you Ram to at least 512 MB. Only have open
(applications running) at the same time that you need. All open
Applications and the Operating System use some of the available Ram.
Each open window also uses Ram so keep the number of windows open on
your Desktop at the same time to a Minimum.
2. Also O.S. 10.1.5 needs a contiguous free block of 15 to 20 MB on
your Hard drive for it to function properly. Verify that you have
this space free on your Hard Drive.
3. Once a month I use Norton Disk Doctor and Disk Warrior to keep my
Hard Drive in good shape.
Hope this helps,

I went through a similar process recently, except that it was basically
migrating things from one hard drive to another on the same G4. The
best single resource for me to rely on over time and for future
reference is David Pogue's "Mac OS X Panther Edition The Missing
Manual." Some user group friends mention a similar book by Robin
Williams, perhaps with less technical detail but more "how to do it
screen shots." Believe me, many questions will come up, for which you
will want the answers at your finger tips.
The next best resource has been Apple's web site, using the support tab
or: http://www.apple.com/support/ . Enter simple search terms in the
Search box. Search terms can include the following Article ID numbers
which gave me very helpful advice which I printed out for study and
reference while planning and making my moves:
25575 - Mac OS: Moving Files From Your Older Macintosh to a New One
106706 - Mac OS X: How to Print
106710 - Mac OS X: How to Print from a Classic Application
106683 - Setting up Mail in Mac OS X
106719 - Mac OS X: How to Use Mac OS 9 Applications
25392 - Isolating Issues in Mac OS X
Many of these articles point to others via hot links for more info.
Search terms such as "Back Up" and "Restore" will bring other items to
you.
107600 - Safari: You can only drag one bookmark at a time from Internet
Explorer
This last one, you wish you never have to use. Assuming you have been
using Internet Explorer on the iMac, you may want to save and use your
"Favorites" or Bookmarks on the eMac. NEVER, Never open Safari until
you have prepared for it as follows. Briefly, while both computers are
connected and running, on the eMac, open Internet Explorer 5.2. Read
the Help instructions relating to Import. Go to the File menu to find
Import Favorites and follow the process to bring the Favorites over
from the IE on the iMac. Next, make sure you have a good copy of the
Favorites on the eMac. Then open Safari; it will automatically grab
the Favorites from IE 5.2 and put them into its own Bookmarks lists.
This is a one-time good deal with Safari.
Another resource that is usually helpful is actually the "Help" menu on
both the iMac and the eMac. Again, search terms will lead to answers
to many questions.
Jack Keating <jkeating2@xxxxxxx_net> wrote:

So, it is not completely dead, because you will still use it for
Reunion. You did not say what model iMac this is, but you can connect
it directly by cable to the eMac via ethernet or firewire. No need to
use the Zip to move files. Also, I understand that new Macs will beg
you during the set-up process to import your old files, but I have
never seen the details on this. Look for them in your eMac's paper
manual or at the Apple web site. Or hopefully, another ReunionTalker
will get into this.

Back up your essential user files from the iMac to the Zip, just in
case things go wrong in all the other activity.

Please let me try to eliminate a point of confusion. If you do not
have OS X on the iMac, your OS 9.0 is not "Classic." The word applies
to the use of an OS 9.1 or 9.2 System Folder in an Mac that is actually
running OS X. "Classic Mode" means that OS X uses the System Folder's
OS 9.1 or 9.2 software to run the "Classic" applications. The new eMac
will not start up in OS 9. Some old applications for OS 9 and OS 8
will not take kindly to just copying from the iMac to the eMac. When
you find glitches, you'll have to re-install those applications from
their original CD-ROMs.
> Should I update to Reunion 8.0?
That's an option. No need to hurry.

There are easy instructions to follow with the OS 8 software.
Hope this helps.

Just for general info, Bill has been told incorrectly. This is not a
feature unique to OS X. It's been around in certain models of Mac
for some time now. It's called FireWire Target Disk Mode. For a Mac
to support this feature, it must have a FireWire port. You reboot
the Mac while holding the "T" key, and it can be connected via
FireWire cable to another Mac and seen as if it were an external disk
drive.

Bill is probably referring to using target mode. This is not unique to
the G5 - I use this method all the time to transfer files between my G3
PB (still with OS 9) to my G4 desktop with Jaguar.
1. Turn the target computer off. If you are using a PowerBook or iBook as
the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
2. Use a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to connect the target computer
to the host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.
3. Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T
key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer
should appear on the host computer desktop along with the host hard drive
and you can drag files from one to the other. It transfers copies, of
course.
4. When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard
disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9)
or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X). Restart the target computer.

Jack,
It is a bit hard to know how to answer this without knowing just how
"belly up" the iMac is, and which particular model it is.
If the iMac is a "slot loading " model, with a firewire port, and is
still useable, then the simplest way to move material from the iMac
to the eMac is to use "firewire target disk mode". This involves
shutting down the iMac and connecting it directly to the eMac with a
firewire cable . Then hold down the "t" key on the iMac and start it
up. The iMac HD should now appear on the eMac desktop as an
additional hard drive, from which you can copy away to your hearts
content. This is by far the fastest and easiest way of transferring
stuff from one firewire equipped Mac to another.
If the iMac is an older, tray loading model, or one of the base
model iMac 350 slot loaders that came without a firewire port, but
can still be booted up, then you can either hook up your zip drive to
the iMac, copy across your files 250 Meg at a time, and then eject
and disconnect it from the iMac and connect it to the eMac to finish
moving the files. All iMacs have a USB port, and so does the eMac, to
connect the drive to.
This will be a fairly slow process if you have a lot of stuff on the
iMac. If you use this approach make sure that you "eject" the zip
disk each time before unplugging it from the computers or you may
suffer disk corruption, or even ruin the disk. You should be able to
use the drive without having to install any iomega driver software
on the eMac, but you may need to install it on the iMac.
Another alternative would be to "network" the eMac to the iMac using
an ethernet cable. THis is fairly simple under OSX 10.3 and you will
find instructions under the help menu on the eMac , or on the Apple
support website - The relevant pages can be accessed through
http://www.apple.com/support/panther/network/
If the iMac can't be started up, even in "firewire target disk" mode,
then you are going to find it significantly harder, perhaps
impossible unless you can get it running again. In some situations
you can physically remove the hard drive from the computer and put it
in an external firewire drive enclosure, but this will cost you some
money and necessitate dismantling your iMac. If the hard drive of the
computer is beyond redemption then you have the option of trying a
place like "drivesavers" to recover the data, but the costs can be
prohibitive.
For general help with sorting out your iMac problems you can't go
past the Apple iMac discussion group at
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@x_ef9fbd1 You have to
"register" with Apple (its free) to post messages there , but it is
well worth the trouble. You can read the existing posts as a "guest"
if you wish though, and there are very few matters that haven't
already been addressed there.
Otherwise post back here or email me explaining a bit more about the
nature of your iMac problems (will it start up still, does it come
up with a "questionmark" at startup , etc etc), and providing some
more information about which model you have (slot loading or tray
loading, colour, and processor speed all help) and it will be easier
to offer solid, straightforward advice.
Cheers
Rod

Adding to this suggestion, the Firewire "Target Disk Mode" has been
around for a long time. Apple has some excellent articles on how to do
it on their support web site. Here is an article you should read before
trying it (it's actually quite easy).

I have been using Reunion since v.1 and have upgraded through every
version. This company, Leister Productions, is tied for the very best
in the Macintosh software business (the other is Oak Tree Software,
publishers of Accordance). Both these companies are Macintosh only
and support back Macintosh Operating Systems.
Many have expressed concerns on this forum about the compatibility of
v. 9 with OS X since we are looking forward to upgrading to Reunion
9, but cannot see our way clear (for various reasons) to upgrade to
OS X.

Various people have said similar things and its certainly true you
can use target disk mode under earlier versions of the OS too.
I suspect however that Bill was actually referring to a further
significant development of this process called "Setup Assistant"

Rod, yes, thank you. That is the feature I was referring to, I didn't know
the name for it. I figured that everyone knew about the target disk mode,
that's been around for a very long time. I've heard about but not used the
new feature in Setup Assistant that assists with the transfer of files
from an old machine to a new one. I'm disappointed to hear that the old
machine must be running OS-X v10.1 or later.
Last evening, I saw a commercial product that does much the same for
people upgrading to a Mac from a PC. I understand that there is something
similar for old Mac to new Mac, perhaps that will work with a Mac running
OS-9 or earlier. (Now if I could just remember the name of the company
...; I'll bet a google search would turn it up.)
Thanks again,
Bill

I have been using, until I changed to OSX, a small shareware application
from:
Ron Lichty, PO Box 27262, SF, CA 94127.

This small app puts a window on your DeskTop that flags up upcoming

you tell it. It is a very good reminder of when to do.

Greetings
I've not needed to do that "live fire".
I would do a chronological list to a report then edit the report. The
key would be setting up the listing to have the fields you wish in the
order you wish them. My first fields would be
Last Name, First Name, Suffix, Birthdate, Death date, Parents, Spouse
for example.
So List>Calendar. Within Calendar select birth and chronological.
The report will be by year, then birth order within the year. I'd
edit out of the report the years I do not want in the word processor.

Susan,
That would be the Godfrey Memorial Library in Middletown, Connecticut
<www.godfrey.org> and click on "Godfrey Scholars. They have the
HeritageQuest database as well as some others. Neither HeritageQuest
nor Ancestry are complete but because of the ease of use, my preference
is HeritageQuest for the years that are available. HeritageQuest is
also only a head of household index, whereas Ancestry has an every name
index for a number of years.
Good luck.

In order to access your public library site you must belong to the

When you get your library card it will have a number on your card and

I was sure I had done it before but couldn't remember how. This was a

Yes, I stumbled upon the same question a few weeks ago, but the answer
is simple. One thing you should know, however, is that in Reunion I
believe you can only change smart quotes to dumb. You can't do it
adequately the other way around, because Reunion's replace routine does
not recognize whether the quote is at the beginning or end of a
sentence, so you would wind up with, say, open quotes at the beginning
AND end of sentences. Word is smarter than this, so you can always
replace-all in Word back to smart quotes if needed.
To change all in Reunion to dumb quotes:
1) Make sure you have an example of a smart quote and a smart
single-quote for both the open of a sentence and the end of a sentence.
To do this, go to your Options menu and make sure Smart Quotes is
checked. Then go to your note field and type "test" and 'test' (one with
quotes, the other with single-quotes). They should come out as smart
quotes.
2) Copy the open smart quote (select that one character and hit the
command-c keys).
3) Go back to the Options menu and UNCHECK Smart Quotes.
4) Go to the Find menu and select Replace.... In the top text field,
paste your smart quote (command-v). In the "with" text field, just type
a quote. (It should appear as a dumb quote.) If you want to change it
for all fields, select the All People radio button, otherwise you can
select just those people you've marked. Select "All Fields" for the
Where menu (recommended), and leave the How radio button on "Any Match."
Then hit the Replace button.
After it's replaced all the smart open quotes, repeat stpes 2-4 for the
smart close quote, and then the smart open and smart closed
single-quotes.

Reunion doesn't have this capability.
My opinion is that you should ALWAYS record the place names in words -
that way there can be absolutely no room for confusion about where a
place is - this includes finishing the place name with the country,
except I do "cheat" a little and use USA for United States of America
in my databases, but I spell out all other countries as words.
This avoids any confusion with trying to decide if
Perth, WA
is in Washington, USA, or Western Australia, Australia.

I don't know about the capability to have both the short and long
versions, but I'd just like to add my strong opinion that you should
always be using the long form of the name. If someone who is not from
the US tries to understand your files, they'll be very confused by the
abbreviations. Also, I've seen people use the wrong abbreviations for a
state, say AR for Arizona, rather than AZ. This actually happened the
other day at the FHC. A man was there using TempleReady, and the man
who was helping him noticed that the man's files had a lot of place
names that said AR, yet they'd been talking about the family being from
AZ. The patron said, "oh that doesn't matter, I know it's Arizona", but
the man from the FHC pointed out that all this data was going to end up
in the IGI, where others would interpret it as Arkansas, if they knew
the codes.

TX might not be meaningful to people far out into the future or in other
parts of the world. Much depends on what you plan to do with your family
tree information, but spelling out place names never goes wrong.

Not without resorting to double entries which is an open invitation for
trouble.

Call me the odd man out, but I insist on using the LONG version. Long
after I have gone to that great research library in the sky, those that
read my work will be able to decipher my musings without having to
puzzle cryptic abbreviations. Besides, I find that the use of
abbreviations is an invitation to cheat! All too many times when I get a
GEDCOM from a distant relative I find far too many multiple entries for
the same location - sometimes five and six variations when one will
suffice!
For that matter, as a geographer by training, I have a penchant for
organizing geographic data by region -- largest to smallest. I will
grant those who prefer the traditional (smallest to largest) format that
my entries "looks funny" when put in to narrative form. But they have one
very important feature, that of keeping place names orderly and
consistent!
Whatever method you decide to use, devise a set of rules and STICK TO
THEM! And if you decide to use abbreviations, create a "cheat sheet"
that you can include in your official reports.
My $0.02 worth, YMMV.

There's an easier way to enter the "curly" single and double quotes
into the Replace fields; you can type them directly from the keyboard.
The keystrokes are:
Open Double Quote (=93): Option-Left Bracket (to the right of the P key)
Closed Double Quote (=94): Option-Shift-Left Bracket
Open Single Quote (=91): Option-Right Bracket
Closed Single Quote (=92): Option-Shift-Right Bracket
I know; it's not logical or intuitive (why not have Option-Left and
Right Brackets for Open and Closed Single Quotes and Option-Shift-Left
and Right Brackets for Open and Closed Single Quotes?) We've needed to
use these key combinations all the time because up until recently
Illustrator didn't have a "Smart Quotes" function and all quotes and
apostrophes had to be entered this way. What a pain, but nothing
compared to what you have to do to get correct feet and inches marks!
Hope this helps, and Regards
Mark

After years of trying to decipher towns, counties, etc. in England,
Scotland, Wales, Germany, etc., I decided to spell everything out -
including the state, plus USA.
i.e. Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co, California, USA
Doing find/replace in Reunion was relatively easy and now others
reading my data online will not have to wonder what those darn
abbreviations mean!

I may be of the old school, but my thought is that the TX abbreviation
should only be used for a mailing address, and Texas takes up only three
more letters, not a whole lot of extra space. If abbreviation of a state
name is desired, I prefer the old abbreviations, such as Pa. for
Pennsylvania, or Tenn. for Tennessee, N. Y. for New York, etc. But
generally, I spell them out completely. Someone in a foreign county may
not know whether AL stands for Alabama or Alaska, as a matter of fact, I
am not sure myself. And again, they may not know the names of all the
states in any case.
Would you know, for example, what NSW, NT or QLD stands for in Australia?
Best wishes,
Will

Subject: Sources - Free form fields vs pre-defined fields
Hello hello. Happy holidays, all.
I am in a quandary over my sources. Most (if not all) of my sources
use the pre-defined fields in the pre-defined types of sources.
I do not want to change my source types, but I am wondering if, when
the time comes to exchange information with other individuals not using
Reunion (and even some who are), it would be easier to use the
free-form text field (tab 2) rather than the pre-defined fields? One
of the advantages of the pre-defined fields is that I don't have to
edit the look of them (underline or italics) like I would have to with
the free-form text field.
I am interesting in hearing the pros and cons from people organizing
their sources either way. My family file has over 800 sources, but I
am willing to work with getting my sources the way I want them to be.
Thanks for any advice.

1) make sure (list sources>source tools) that you make the two sources
*identical* to each other, so that the program won't have any difficulty
catching the duplication.
2) (find>match & merge sources). You will be asked about each possible
merge it finds, so you don't have to worry about it merging without your
consent "Doodad Township Idaho marriage book volume 2" and "Doodad Township
Idaho marriage book volume 27".
Step one may not be necessary if what you have is pretty close to each
other, especially in the first 25 or so characters. But if you have
one as say, Dingbat Township, Podunk County and the other as Podunk
County, Dingbat Township it won't catch that they're the same unless
you edit one first to bring them more in line with each other.

Yes, it can. As I have a fundamental objection to the abbreviation of
the Province/State/Country I live in, I refuse to abbreviate them wher I
can and Reunion permits my idiosyncrasies.

The two most common ones I've found in files I've received from
cousins that I know are dealing with the midwest US in general are
"AK" for Arkansas and "NB" for Nebraska. By working with the
town/county names, it's been patently clear, after some digging, that
that's what they should be, and none of those cousins really did dash
off to Alaska or New Brunswick. But folks who simply take locations
as gospel, without being suspicious of oddities, would probably spend
years looking for records in a seriously wrong place.

Okay, after the deluge yesterday, I'm going to suggest there are good
reasons to use shortened forms of state names.
Shortening "North Carolina" to NC (to give an example that saves space)
means that if fits on my screen, and it is much more likely NOT to be
abbreviated against my will in reports into some format I can't
understand. Cascading pedigree, for example, cuts off places that are
too long to fit. I would rather see ", NC" at the end of an entry than
", Nor". Other less flexible genealogy programs are even worse at this
and will just cut things off when you import. And even when Reunion
doesn't cut things off, writing it out wastes valuable space on charts.
Abbreviating Ohio or Texas falls under consistency.
I put a county in every entry I can, and add the country if it's not
USA/colonies. I use the correct state codes because I know what they
are. These entries are not ambiguous unless the person looking at them
is uninformed and unprepared to be doing US research. While I would like
to be all things to all people, the advantages to me and those who read
my (not cut off) charts outweigh the problems for those who should be
better informed in the first place.
That said, a feature that DID make things completely unambiguous by
tying short forms to long forms would be nice. One could then choose
which form to use in which situation. But until then, count me one for
economy.

Smart quotes refer to quotation marks that tilt toward the sentence they
contain. "Open quotes" tilt left to right, "Close quotes" tilt right to
left. The same is true of "Single" quotes.
Dumb quotes refer to quotations marks that are straight up and down. They
are androgynous -- can be used either at the start or finish of the
sentence.
The problem is that the character sets that include smart quotes don't
match, especially between Macintosh and Windows-compatible computers, so a
smart quote on a Mac will render a Greek letter on a Windows system, even if
the same font is used. Since I'm on a Mac, I just leave everything to dumb
quotes unless I'm printing a formal document, at which time I change them on
the "prepress" side.

I also have a problem with people assuming the state based on the

There has been periodic talk on the list for ways to get birthday and
anniversary dates out of Reunion and into a calendar program for use as
a reminder as to when certain events are going to occur.
I started an idea a while ago (as did someone else in an AppleScript)
to convert a gedcom file (exported from Reunion) into a vCal file
(.ics) that can be imported into iCal (and the like).
I am happy to finally release this to the public.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/dsugar100/GEDConvert/gedparse.php
It has the ability to select what kind of information to pull out of
the gedcom file (birthday and anniversary). And to restrict the dates
that are converted into the vCal based on what is available in the
gedcom file. For example you can select how much of a date must be
there for the entry to be converted. For birthdays to only include
people still alive or include people who are dead. It can also include
death reminders (yahrzeit dates for those who are jewish). Also
wedding anniversary reminders and to optionally restrict to only those
couples who are still together and where both people are still alive.
Please send feedback off list (of course I'm sure others would like to
hear positive comments!).
It doesn't look very pretty (I'm not a graphic artist), but it does
seem to function properly. It does need more people to give it a good
workout to verify.

You don't say what Mac OS version you're running, but at least on my
Mac running Mac OS X 10.3.7 it does show the Reunion document files in
Recent Documents.
For Mac OS X, go to Apple menu ------> System Preferences ------>
Appearance and make sure in the line for Documents in the section for
Recent Items you've chosen a number there (rather than "None").
Once that is set, your Reunion data file will show up as a Recent
document, and Reunion will show as a Recent application if you have it
set to show Applications as Recent Items also.

The list appears to be maintained alphabetically and Reunion is quite a

That's actually the first thing I did when I got my first Mac and
Reunion (about 3 1/2 years ago): Family Tree Maker, at least in my
day, had no facility for global fixes for that and I was ecstatic to
find it in Reunion.
Fixing your locations for consistency is so easy in Reunion (time

1) DIACRITICS. Record searching and correspondence for me, obviously
required use of diacritics for European contacts. I became proficient
in "key combination" use for most of the diacritics, but it was always
awkward. One day I discovered a Program that ENDED all these
difficulties and I've used for many years now. Originally it was for
use on MacIntosh ONLY, but it has recently been offered for those (ugh

I've noticed occasional postings to this list that express
difficulties with use of diacritics entry ...... I would suggest that
those persons explore the Program known as PopChar. For information go

2) I have been using REUNION since prior to Version 3. I had little

Subsequent to the Transfer I have enjoyed the accumulation of a modest

received notation on their PAGE !! The volume and complex linking do
NOT permit individual removal of this erroneous entry w/ any degree of

I have been unable to find a selection offered in the Menu that will
ERASE ALL these several entries and allow me to start fresh (I believe
the "Source Number" will remain in the Program, but I'd at least be

I've never had a problem with that. Check your settings for the Recent

Some knowledge or ability to get knowledge and mental engagement
should be expected of the reader of the reports and charts. The Postal
ID is widely known and available.
TX is concise for charts and reports.
The typo potential is reduced.
It is easier on the eyes and reads better.
All the readers of the reports I asked said "Use whatever you like. TX is

If I knew the township, I'd include it, otherwise the latter form, although
I'd add a bit to it, i.e.,
(loc) Duckbreath Township, Wombat County, North Carolina
(memo) Pleasant Hill, the family homeplace
or some such, as just "Pleasant Hill" means nothing to anyone who doesn't
already know it was the name of the homeplace.

Subject: RE: "Suggestion" (diacritics) & "Source" Problem.
Hi Bud -
I'm a second and third generation Swede, Norwegian, and Dane (plus
English, Irish, and potentially French and German I discovered this past
year). I have both my PC and my iBook KEYBOARD settings so I can, at two
clicks, change the keyboard to the language I need, which has all the
diacritical marks automatically because programming the KEYBOARD settings
makes the keyboard like the languages found from those other countries.
After the Keyboard settings are programmed, it's installed on the toolbar
automatically with the default setting for English showing, but clicking
on the default setting makes a scroll bar appear and one selects the
language for the keyboard from there. In my iBook, the US flag is where
the American English keyboard is located and was auto-installed in the
upper right hand corner, and the other three languages have the flag from
that nation and the country's name. On my PC "EN" shows on the toolbar,
but when I click on that, the menu pops up and I can select any of the
three languages I need from the two-letter code. I happen to know there
are a whole bunch of other languages in the KEYBOARD settings on both the
PC and my iBook, but I don't need to use them yet so I haven't programmed
the keyboard for more than English and the three Scandinavian
alphabets. The keyboard settings to include the other languages are very
easy to program. In the three Scandinavian alphabets the three extra
vowels are found under the keys ;:, '", and [{ or ]}. The rest of the
keyboard is mostly the same, and I sometimes forget to change the
settings until I have to use the upper case symbols located above the
numbers, and then I just click on the menu on my iBook's upper toolbar,
the menu pops down, I select the US flag again, and my keyboard is back
to what I need. You can change one letter at a time, then switch back to
English, or leave the keyboard setting for any foreign language if you
have to type long sections for your Notes, which do transfer over to web
pages, or the Notes can be copied and pasted into emails, too.
I was quite particular that I didn't want to upload my genealogy data to
someone else's web site if the extra letters from the Scandinavian
languages didn't transfer over, too, which would have been the case with
a gedcom file, I believe. I discovered when I experimentally opened a
Reunion gedcom file in FTM on my PC that the extra vowels in the three
Scandinavian languages had been replaced by an x in each instance. I
hadn't used FTM on my PC anyway because the program is cumbersome to use
(to be polite about it), but it came with 15-20 extra CDs of info and I
have used some CD info (FTM's genealogy program is useless otherwise). I
knew the correct Scandinavian spellings, how to search their web sites
(where I sometimes have to switch the keyboard settings or I don't get a
hit if the words are not spelled correctly for searching their web
sites), historical language transitions in the Norwegian language and
why, and in the case of my Norwegian genealogy, I got the info with the
correct Norwegian spellings from a distant cousin in Norway who is a
genealogy researcher and he sent me the correct spellings for the names
and locations, and I wanted the correct Scandinavian spellings to appear
in my records in my iBook in Reunion and on my web site (which I make in
Reunion, transfer to my PC with a Lexar Jump Drive, then edit in
FrontPage and add the graphics and logos I made specifically for my
genealogy web pages - I add my own backgrounds in Reunion on the iBook,
as well as the genealogy photos I've transferred to the iBook), and I add
music and the flash intro for both, and do an .ftp transfer to my ISPs web
server. That may be the long way to go about it, but it works for my
particular needs, and nothing gets lost in the translation. (Well, I
figured all of this stuff out over many weeks after I discovered
Reunion's "web card" was, in fact, a "web page" as I knew a web page to
look like when I made them... "card" made me think of a recipe card... it
was only after getting the Reunion e-newsletter that I discovered "card"
and "page" are the same thing - I had not experimented with "Create > Web
Card" prior to that because I thought it would print out something that
looked like a large recipe file card....)
Your Source data I can't help you with; sorry. I seldom or never use it,
although I do have sources listed, particularly the bibliographic info for
books (I don't include the Source page for my web info - it's just there
if I need it as I do data entry).
I put the name of my sources and any quotes in the Notes section for each
person, or in the family Notes section (as I do with photos for
individuals or family) so it will transfer over to the .html pages for my
two genealogy web sites so that other family genealogists and other family
members who are interested in the history but don't do research can read
the notes and sources both from the same page - I also add any web links
in my Notes sections for each person which can be clicked on for people
to check out. I had my original (pre-computer) genealogy notebooks set
up so that the source data and notes appeared immediately after the names
of the people on the Family Group Sheet, and Reunion lets me do exactly
that by having the Notes section where it is (or, at least the way I
programmed it to appear....).
Hope the keyboard info is useful to you. If that is not what you were
asking about to get the extra letters for different alphabets in other
languages to use for names and info using other languages.... I don't
have answers. I know Windows has a way of adding different letters with
diacritical marks for one letter manually, and I've used that on
occasion, as well as the copyright symbol, but for me it's just easier to
use the keyboard programmed for different languages - I don't have to go
in search of different letters with different diacritical marks; it's
part of the keyboard for the languages I have programmed in already. I
suspect I'll run into problems if/when I have to use French or German,
but I'll figure it all out by simply typing the alphabets and see what
comes up on the screen and try to remember the keys where I found those
letters with diacritical marks.
Best Wishes,

Hello,
For years it has been very popular among Apple/Macintosh users to look at
the Windows OS as inferior, full of bugs, etc etc.
But for the diacritics I must say that, as far as I can remember (1990),
Windows contained a standard program, called charmap.exe, which
essentially does the same as Pop Char.

Greetings
I've received some email, each appreciated, supporting this
construction for Place. A variation is to put the Home in the Memo
field.
I'm focused on data output. How does it look and read when published?
I want it to read easily.

If you are using OS X "diacritics" are present in the main menu bar
all the time -- under the "National Flag" - "Show Charecter Palette"
-- it is very flexible, easy to use and available in all programmes I
have used, including Browser address field.

How is the Flag option to be used?
I have flagged events for me and my parents but they are not visible.
When I look at my person card I don't see any visual indication that
an event is flagged.
When I do a report they don't show either.

The first step would be to make sure the parents' of the siblings in
question are in the file. I have several instances where I've wanted to
record siblings, but knew nothing of either parent; and in these cases
I created a person with First (and perhaps Last) name of Unknown. So,
go to this Uncle's mother's card. Create parents for her (unless you
already have them) and then go to their card, and add or create the
brother.
If the wife (married to both the uncle and his nephew) isn't in the
database, add her as the wife of the wife to one of them. Go to her
other husband, and click on the + sign at the top of his name, and
select "Existing spouse...". Navigate to the wife's name, and select
it.
Hope I followed your line correctly, and that you follow my explanation!

While I have yet to embark on the mammoth project of entering all my
data into Reunion, I wanted to comment on the location description
challenges as they apply to UK records.
With respect to Birth, Marriage and Death entries, I always enter the
registration district authority which is known by the geographical
locality name, i.e., in the East End of London it might be
Whitechapel, St Georges in the East, Stepney, etc. I find this to be
useful in case anyone else wants to replicate my work, so they can
easily find where the relevant certificate was issued.
I also have an entry for "Living" if that person is still alive. In
this case I use the geographical location that the family would be
most familiar with.

All of them still need work, such as replacing subsequent mentions of
"Durelle Boyd" with the pronoun "He" (I hope the next version of
Reunion has provision for intelligent pronouns in the narrative form
settings). Of the options you gave us, sample E is the most
self-explanatory. Samples B and C are just plain confusing, and D
isn't much better. Sample A is a distant second simply because
there's no explanation of what "Sunnyside" means.
This is probably a case where one has to go through after Reunion
and tidy things up. Here's what I'd do if I ran the zoo:
1. Durelle Boyd KIMBALL II1, GGG Grandson, was born 14 Oct 1897 at
"Sunnyside", the family home, in Middleburg, NC*. He died in
Henderson, <county>, NC, on 11 Mar 1964 at age 66. <sample F>
* By the way, is Middleburg a town, a township, a county or what? It's unclear.

I use Reunion 8.05 and should try:
File -> Page Setup -> Scale
For explanation: use the questionmark in the left-lower corner of the
window
or go to:
Help -> Contents -> Appendices: Page Index -> Scroll to Editing:

Subject: "Suggestions & Sources"
Thanx for all replies to my 28.Dec.2004 posting.
My 2 Part message of "Suggestions & Sources" may have been
misconstrued by some persons.
Part 1, "Suggestions", was ONLY THAT, a suggestion for those persons
having difficulties w/ entering diacritics. I was attempting to convey
a system that I have used for several years on my MacIntosh, that I've
NOT HAD ANY problems reported by recipients => PopChar. It performs the
diacritic actions for all but a FEW languages !! I am NOT seeking
another way to perform this action.
Part 2 "Sources". I received only ONE note related to this question;
and while it offered no solution to the removal of a incorrect Source
notation on a Family Card, it offered a method for entering Source type
data (which confirms what I had already been doing !!).
a- KNOWING that the appearance of an incorrect "Source" notion may
appear on a RELATED Family Card, I can manually remove it.
b- I will CONTINUE to enter Source Type data, i.e., Census, Certified
Vital Records, etc., in the Message block & employ the "Blocking"
configuration to remove exposure of Sensitive data. I am comfortable in
using the Free Form format where I can specifically identify the type
of source I employed in creation of Family Card.
Again, THANX for the responses ....... and BEV, you have provided a
SEARCH URL that I will employ !!

Hello Marita and List,
I use the Flag option to note that my research is pending, incomplete
or not verified. To use the Flag feature, you could do a "Find
Anything" search to make a list of all those folks with a Flagged
entry. The "Flagged" notation does show up on my reports if I change
the report parameters to show "Flags", see the path below. The Flagged
notation will list along with the other items in your Family Group
Sheet or other Family History Reports.
Go to Create>Family Group Sheet>Layout>Define Layouts>Flags and check
the Flag boxes.
Go to Create>Family History Report>Layout>Define Layouts>Flags and
check the Flag boxes that you want to show up on the report.
Hope this helps, JB Wilson, Beaverton, Oregon :-)

Subject: Reunion > Textedit not Appleworks
I recently upgraded to OS 10.2.8 from OS 9. In my robust enthusiasm I
upgraded Reunion 8 (for OSX) before Appleworks (for OSX). Now when
making charts Reunion does not see Appleworks and wants to configure in
Textedit. How do I get Reunion to use Appleworks when it does not even
show up as a choice on the destination tab? FYI: I am running Reunion
8.5, Appleworks 6.2.2
Thank you in advance,
